View Full Version : Drawn Together Episode 23 - "Freaks and Greeks" (SEASON 3 PREMIERE!)

Drawn Together is back, but is it better than ever? Remember, from now on, you'll have to watch on Thursday night (tonight for instance) to witness the crazy scenarios the roomies encounter... for instance, why is Captain Hero starting a Greek fraternity? And why is Ling-Ling's father falling for Toot? Those questions... might not be answered. Unless they are.
Discuss... or dis and cuss.:D

Like everyone else said, the Daily Show joke is extremely hilarious
Also, if anyone had captions on, it had the lyrics for the begining of the actual Oompa Loompa song, instead of the sound alike used in the show.

This episode was hilarious. I laughed about as much as the South Park premiere.
My only complaint is the Chinese jokes concerning Ling Ling and his father. Isn't Ling Ling supposed to be Japanese? So, why the hell did they break a fortune cookie at the wedding? Fortune cookies are Chinese.

Ling Ling is an amalgamation of all Asians, basically. They can throw all that stuff into the pot. His name is Chinese, yet the creatures he's based on are from Japan.

Loved the Daily Show gag, liked the Karaoke gag, Hero ripping out the guy's heart, and them abducting the kid (I thought it would be far worse than just kidnapping, knowing Hero), Hero locking Xander in the trunk, the George Takei gag, and a few other things.
HATED the Willy Wonka parody. That movie seriously needs to be made off-limit for parody. EVERY SINGLE SHOW ON EARTH HAS DONE IT AT THIS POINT! The Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Dexter's Laboratory, and I could name more if I cared enough to list more but I think I've made my point. At least, if you're going to parody the movie, do something more obscure like the endless elevator or when he meets the guy in the alley. Also, Grease parodies are getting kind of overdone themselves.
Overall, it was better than season 2 episodes but it had some gags I didn't like at all. I focused on ones that really annoyed me but there were ones that I just didn't care to mention.
Rating: B
By the way, is Ling Ling's dialogue real or just gibberish?

Well the thing though it was like a short, unexpected 10 second parody. And a pretty funny one IMHO cause like most DT jokes it was too fast to see coming. Plus I don't see the point of parodying part of the movie that most people wouldn't get if the jokes are supppose to be fairly broad. You can only be obscure if it's just a refrence or the point is obscurity but I bet they wanted to go with something most people would get as well.
By the way, is Ling Ling's dialogue real or just gibberish?
I'm pretty sure it's been established that Ling Ling's speaking gibberish and no real actual language. It's obvious when some regular english words are mixed in as well as the gibberish sounding asian speak.
This was a great season premiere. Though it's obvious that in this season we'll be seeing more of Hero then ever before that's okay as long as he's as funny here as he is in the later episodes. From randomly crashing the house to his pranks on the house to how to get fellow pledge mates Woodlor and Xandir ready for the ultimate prank to thinking that the girl is a goat to wanting to go to Greece to the ending song he was really funny here. And I thought it was interesting how Clara and Spanky Ham were cameos here. (I didn't even think Spanky would be in this episode until his one second cameo when they landed in Greece. I guess that was the point). Ling Ling's plot was good too (I know he gets a couple of plots this season, but I hope in general he gets more screentime even when he dosen't have a plot. A lot of later season 2 episodes he didn't even have lines if he wasn't part of the plot) from Ling Ling's dad liking Jon Stewart to his opinion of the Drawn Together house to Ling's dislike of "Toot-San" trying to take advantge of his dad's money to the nosey lawyers to the ending with George Takei, all very funny stuff. Let's hope the rest of the season stays as funny.

It would only be obscure in the scope of the fact that it's a rarely parodied part of the film. It's still from a highly unobscure source.

I thought the South Park premiere was fantastic so I take it as a real compliment for Drawn Together that you thought it was comperable to that South Park episode.
We've established that Ling-Ling is Japorean. But he and his family represent all Asian stereotypes.

The "fifty-fifty" thing is what threw me because it actually sounded like a real word. I usually don't catch any of his dialogue but that was stated slowly and clearly so I figured maybe it was real. The only Japanese words I know are anime characters whose names mean something and "yes". >_>

Highlights:
• The Daily Show promo running joke (genius, as everyone has pointed out)!
• Hero wreaking havoc on the Georgopolis' dining room (Is it me or did he look cute in that toga? Yeah, it's probably just me.)
• The sick parents pile (I'm guessing that bearded black & white guy was Toot's dad? ... Or was it Spanky's mom?)
• Ling-Ling Hitler Bin Laden Seacrest. *snort*
• All the fraternity highjinks (toilet papering, ninja panty-raid, destroying the "float," Wooldoor & the cinderblock, etc.)
• Toot's John McCain/Hanoi Hilton and Tiananman Square lines, LOL!
• The fairy dressed like Peter Pan and the talking banana. (I don't know why I found this so funny, but I did).
• Mistaking the little girl as a goat mascot? ROTFL! So very wrong.... or quite possibly so very right? (I also liked that they cared enough to put a bell around her neck...)
• Xandir in the trunk!
• Ling-Ling's dad running off with Mr Sulu. (Awww, seems sort of oddly appropriate!)
• The musical number at the end (HILLARITY x 10!).
Lowlights:
• The Toot is fat & hiddeous jokes were layed on almost too thick - but I guess that was kind of necessary (and they were funny, so I can't really complain too much).
Stuff I don't feel strongly about one way or the other but felt like mentioning anway:
• Yikes, naked Wooldoor? How did that get on without being pixelated or blocked out??? (I think this is the first time we've seen him without his socks.)
All in all, GREAT way to start off the 3rd season! Bravo! I hope the rest of the season is this good.
Also, the episode commentary download was a nice treat - I'm so glad Comedy Central is doing that now! I can't wait to see li'l Ray-Ray. ;)
Funny episode. :) Why was DT moved to Thursdays, though?

Highlights:
• The Daily Show promo running joke (genius, as everyone has pointed out)!
Bugs are REALLY annoying! It's so nice the DT team found this clever way to make fun of them. I also liked their previous bug gag in "The Lemon-AIDS Walk" when they advertise Judge Fudge's show as a preview for the Judge Fudge segment that closes the episode.
• The sick parents pile (I'm guessing that bearded black & white guy was Toot's dad? ... Or was it Spanky's mom?)
Given that the person was neither a pig nor in color, my money's on Toot's dad. But your guess is good too. ;)
• The fairy dressed like Peter Pan and the talking banana. (I don't know why I found this so funny, but I did).
This was hysterical! One of my favorite parts of the episode.
The Toot is fat & hiddeous jokes were layed on almost too thick - but I guess that was kind of necessary (and they were funny, so I can't really complain too much).
*sigh* I've got to agree on this one. It's not like it was out of character for them to portray Toot in this way; it's completely consistent with how they've depicted her in the past. I still feel, though, that they really overdid it in this episode (though I'm sure that was the point of the whole thing). Still, like you say, I can't complain too much, since that was my only complaint about this episode, and admittedly in this case it was necessary for the story. I'd just like to see her portrayed more sympathetically in future episodes.
• Yikes, naked Wooldoor? How did that get on without being pixelated or blocked out??? (I think this is the first time we've seen him without his socks.)
Unless you count that bit in "The Other Cousin" when there was a hole in his sock and one of his toes was poking out, it is.
Some other comments I had:
Clara only has two lines AND she gets her hair and scalp ripped off by Captain Hero? Damn! Not a pleasant episode for her at all. (Though I'm guessing her speaking role was small because Toot had such a heavy part.) Has anyone else noticed that for some reason Clara really seems to get physically abused by the other housemates (especially Captain Hero)? I wonder if this is intentional.
Totoro makes a third cameo appearance in the show. I think it's safe to say we have a running gag on our hands.
Ling-Ling Hitler Bin Laden Seacrest: was this just a gag, or is this actually canon? With DT, it can be really tough to tell.
But anyway, this was a great show to open the season; I'm even more excited about the upcoming episodes, though. It sounds like we're in for another round of Evil Clara in episode 2, but we'll have to wait and see, I guess.

I think Ling Ling and Toot both get killed more often than Clara though. I think either Spanky or Captain Hero gets killed the least. I used to have a running tally on how many times each character has died, but I lost track somewhere in season 2.

I'm not talking about just dying. In that regard, Ling-Ling and Toot easily top the list. (And Captain Hero is the least) But most of their deaths are either accidents or in Toot's case, self-inflicted. Clara, on the other hand, may not die as much, but she seems to be on the receiving end of a lot of deliberate physical violence by her fellow housemates. She's been punched out by both Foxxy and Hero, violently shoved to the ground by Hero, given electrical shocks by Foxxy, pushed down several flights of stairs by Toot, struck by Wooldoor with a board countless times in the Alzheimer's episode, and on two separate occasions, Hero brutally murders her. (Admittedly, one of those was "The Lemon-AIDS Walk", when he kills everybody.)
By the way, you can find an up to date list of all the housemate deaths here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running gags on Drawn Together#Housemate_deaths

You're right. It was part of the story. Jun-jee has cateracts and can't see how horrible Toot looks. So we made her look really terrible to drive the point home.

Clara and Spanky (and to a lesser degree, Foxxy) didn't have much screen time this week because they didn't fit into either of the stories. It goes that way sometimes. But the number of lines Toot has doesn't effect the number of lines Clara has (or vice versa). We have four hours with Tara Strong each week to record her lines. But Tara's so good at what she does that it rarely takes more than two hours to record the most Toot/Clara heavy shows. And we'll usually throw in a couple of guest characters for her as well (when you have someone that good you might as well take advantage of the situation, right?).
Totoro makes a third cameo appearance in the show. I think it's safe to say we have a running gag on our hands.
The writers haven't intentionally been putting Tortoro into the show. I think the animators have a running gag on their hands.
Ling-Ling Hitler Bin Laden Seacrest: was this just a gag, or is this actually canon? With DT, it can be really tough to tell.
Very little on Drawn Together can be considered canon. If you try to find continuity on this show you'll drive yourself nuts. The only thing that's consistant is we try to make the show as funny as possible. And we'd never let a little thing like continuity get in the way of that.
But anyway, this was a great show to open the season; I'm even more excited about the upcoming episodes, though. It sounds like we're in for another round of Evil Clara in episode 2, but we'll have to wait and see, I guess.
Thanks. If you like evil Clara, just wait till you see what happens in the 1/2 season cliff hanger! Among other things, Clara signs away her soul to Satan.

Thanks, I wondered how that worked. I was thinking of the Unusually Flexible Girl episode, when Clara and Toot were almost completely absent. (Correct me if I'm wrong- Tara did voice UFG, right?) I assumed they were written out to keep Tara's workload from getting too heavy, but it's true, they didn't exactly fit into either of the stories that week- and it was clever to have them acknowledge their small parts at the end of the show. But I agree, if you've got someone like Tara, you take advantage of it. Toot and Clara are two of my favorite characters, and I'd love to see both of them featured more prominently.

That's what I assumed, given that he was an extra all three times. There are all kinds of jokes in the background of each episode, way too many to all be scripted by the writers.

No kidding! I've had several arguments about continuity. The Timmy gag, for instance. Obviously it's just a running gag, but I've seen people try to shape all the info that's been given about him into some kind of cohesive backstory. It can't be done; the whole point of the thing is the sheer randomness of it.

Tara was UFG. And that didn't effect Toot and Clara in the episode. There was nothing for them to do in that story so we just added them into the ending.

I also noticed that but I thought it was a mistake.
It was established in the extended DVD version of some Season One episodes that Wooldoor can split himself in two. Even though the actual splitting hasn't been shown on TV, multiple Wooldoors are a running gag on the show. For instance, in "Foxxy vs. the Board of Education", Wooldoor is the photographer taking pictures of Spanky and Xandir's fake honeymoon, while a second Wooldoor is moving the backdrops.
