All names have a meaning behind them, or people choose certain names for certain reasons. Why do you think names like Bruce, Richard, Barbara or Tim were chosen? What makes these names special, different, in any way? Would other names have worked or not?

For friendship! for being able to say: I have good friends in America!
And also because no one cares about Batman and Batgirl in Holland. And with Bobby and Babs i can talk about my hobbies.

Don't you owe me an e-mail too? or is that a private message?

It seems odd, whenever a name is chosen for a charicter, it seems to fit him/her, and I wonder if they chose a diffrent name, would it also seem to fit the charicter?

so you and the barbara on this broad have a love life? :D just kidding.

the reason I chose my real name, is because I won't be interstiad in batman anymore. When that happens, I'll post a goodbye to all of you.

erm, getting back on topic..

I dunno, but I do know that a number of people do think that Nightwing ought to change his real name to either Richard or Rick, to avoid the male anatomy jokes....

=D

Well to Barb's topic, I guess I don't know. They have just always seemed right. I've never thought to myself, "Why is Batman's name Bruce?" It just is and it seems right to me.

Well ummm... we are back on topic I just don't have any thoughts. :(

It's funny how names get dated, because now Bruce has homosexual connotations, and as for Dick.... well.... :D

I don't know what Bob Kane and other creators had in mind...probaly just used favorite names of theirs or perhaps the characters were named after people they knew. MOST creators use this, but sometimes the names have deeper meanings, such as Darth Vader in Star Wars literally means Dark Father (you would KNOW Vader was Luke's father if you knew about names!)

But I did do some digging (as a writer, I love to research the meanings of names) and here is what I found:

BRUCE: Surname since medieval times; now a common given name. Folklore tale of 14th century Robert King of Scotland: (the Bruce) who learned the value of perseverance from watching a spider spin a web. Gee, perhaps Stan Lee should have used this name instead of Peter for our favorite wall crawler?

RICHARD: Powerful; strong ruler. A Teutonic name from the European Middle Ages. England's King Richard Coeur de Lion was a crusading knight. (Note: Dick also means strong ruler)

BARBARA: Traveler from a foreign land. In Catholic custom St. Barbara is a protectress against fire and lightning.

TIM: Variant of Timothy one who honors God.

and just for the record HARLEY means meadow of the hare.

I really don't think the creators of the charaters intended anything too deep here!

That's so awesome! I always wondered what the names "meant." I haven't done something like that since 7th grade. One activity we did in a class was we looked up all our names and stuff in.....whatever you look them up in.

And that's so cool Dick's name means a strong ruler cuz MY real first name, Stephen, supposedly means a strong leader. They're almost close! :D

I'd say the other names are pretty close fitting to the characters. Maybe it could be a coincidence....or maybe not.... :)

Oh, what loveable vomit! Er, maybe not.

As for me, Robert translates into "bright fame." I'm destined to be a pop star!

I want my email Sassy!! anyhoo, I figure that the creators probably picked names that were familiar to them. My name means Victorious... :D, and my middle name has two meanings, one is tree of the ash, something like that...so I'm victorious over an ass tree...yay for me....

Both my first and middle names mean 'warrior maiden'. Maybe I was destined to be a superhero? Nah...I just like to argue a lot. :p
