"It's the feelin' I get when I cross somethin' off my list that reminds me I'm goin' in the right direction. And each day I'm gettin' a little closer to the kind of man I wanna be."Earl (Jason Lee, “Almost Famous,” “Chasing Amy”) has taken one too many wrong turns on the highway of life. However, a twist of fate turns his life into a tailspin of life-renewing events. Earl won a small lottery, and, after an epiphany, he is determined to transform his good fortune into a life-changing event as he sets out to right all the wrongs from his past.
In its first season, “My Name Is Earl” has been nominated for 2 Golden Globes, 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards, 1 Directors Guild of America Award, 3 Writers Guild of America Awards, and won the coveted People’s Choice Favorite New Television Comedy Award.

Joining Earl along his quest to cleanse his karma are a few dim-witted friends: hapless brother Randy (Ethan Suplee, “Cold Mountain”) and the very sexy Catalina (Nadine Velazquez, “The Bold and the Beautiful”). Even Darnell (Eddie Steeples, “Torque”), the owner of the Crab Shack where Earl drinks beer, offers his support. But it's Earl’s ex-wife Joy (Jaime Pressly, “Not Another Teen Movie”) who won't lift a finger to help unless there's something in it for her.

Despite his seemingly limited intelligence, Earl is oddly effective -- and the top-rated freshman comedy series, like Earl himself, has a voice and style all its own. Created and written by Greg Garcia (“Yes, Dear), “My Name Is Earl” is executive produced by Garcia and Marc Buckland (“Medical Investigation,” “Ed”). The series is produced by Amigos de Garcia and Twentieth Century Fox Television.

Karma is still a funny thing tonight on the season premiere of My Name Is Earl. "Earl" picked up four Emmys this summer Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series. Last season Earl almost gave away his fortune and then Karma came through. Season two moves up an hour so be sure to get there early!

Coming in to season two, this show hasn't lost any of its charm. Greg Garcia is an awesome guy and as long as he doesn't slow down, this show should have a great future.

Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for Joy in this episode. :p She could certainly stand to have some better Karma. Earl and Randy took a big risk trying to help her and thankfully they seemed to make it through. I loved Randy spray-painting his name on the side of the truck and then Earl telling him it wasn't a very good idea.

Joy is definately in some trouble, I'm not sure how she is going to get out of this.

Or Catalina for that matter? It was the season premiere, and she wasn't in it (not that I can remember anyway).I don't believe she was. Her name was still in the cast over the beginning of the episode though, I bet we see her soon.

Actually, why would you want to save a freeloader like Joy?

But still, she's made in America and not a maid in America.:D

Watching Catalina at the strip joint is pretty hot, but even watching the old guy dying after just watching her jumping is even better. Yep, he goes out a happy man. I also liked those migrant workers who were happy they now get to work in 88F environments.

Randy doesn't know when to grow up.:p Only he could bring walnuts to court for smashing or think Donald Trump will give them money. Great to see they refer to the Donald as a "TV character."

> Great to see they refer to the Donald as a "TV character." <

Oh, yes- that was my favorite joke in the ep. The word-play in the title was another good one. And Chubby's idea of what constitutes a "classy joint."

I liked the ending, too. It's very nice to know Earl has such a caring friend.

This was a good one, and i missed a bit of it as well. Catalina is quite the babe too. I enjoyed Bert reynold's character " This is a classy joint. I dont ever wanna hear boobies again." Everyone was really hitting it here, Earl, Randy, Joy, Catalina, Chubby, and some immigrants who are now working lots of hours for little pay and in a comfortable 88 degree weather. Good stuff, I also like the gag of Randy having to talk to prisoners he doesnt even know whenever him and Earl go to jail.

"It was like a cupcake with boobies"

Much better episode than last week.

The Penguin
09-29-2006, 09:18 PM
This week’s episode was a great follow-up to last week. This show manages to put guest stars in great roles. I hope we see more of Burt Reynolds as Chubby. The whole smelling of the ‘boobies’ and ‘classy’ joint was hilarious. ‘If he was poor, we’d call him crazy, but since he was rich we just call him, sir.’ :p

Joy is just impossible. She seems scared to go to prison, but as Earl pointed out, she couldn’t even pretend to be nice for two minutes. Her dancing attempt certainly didn’t work out.

After sitting out the season premiere it was great seeing Catalina back. I don’t think it was ever even implied last season that she danced at the club, but then again, Earl and Randy do very little of their ‘work’ at night. The whole ‘I jump for Earl’ moment was really touching.

Those freaks were quite the characters. That short guy was...really short. I liked how the horn guy didn't have a neck, and the rasta/pasta nipples thing was funny.

Could she be any more dumb? Getting a deaf woman a card with Braile on it.I loved that. I also laughed at the part where Joy laughs at the way she speaks. The episode was above average but I didn't think it was great.
I absolutely loved one particular exchange between Earl and Randy.
"You can't call 'em freaks, Randy."
"They call each other freaks."

After the first two episodes were a little more about Joy and her needs, we really got back on track here with the list and the heart that this show has; both in Earl and in the people around him.

He set out to make thing right with one person and ended up helping a whole group of people. These people are all living their dreams because Earl J. Hickey helped give them the confidence to go out into the world and live. That's powerful.

Samurai Quack, the exchange between Earl and Randy you quoted was one of the episode highlights. :D That was a great moment.

So I guess Joy's plot is going to be an on-going thing all season. Interesting.I'm thinking that might actually be nice. It keeps her somewhat out of Earl's hair while still keeping her involved. Marlee Matlin was great as her lawyer too. Seems if a deaf female actress is needed they go to her (I remember her as Joey Lucas from The West Wing). I'd say that's a good move actually.

Sharklady

That's probably because Matlin

b) has real acting talent, and
c) is very pretty.

One suspects that's a fairly rare combination.

Randy was gold in this episode. I loved the black cat thing at the beginning and how it transitioned into the main plot of the episode.
The recovery of the cat went pretty smoothly. Good thing the sleepy cat lady doesn't seem to ever wake up, that could have made things slightly complicated.

The flashbacks in this series are fantastic, Earl taking us through Randy's previous attempts and failures at relationships "time after time" was hilarious. Randy seemed to really like Judy the cat lady and Earl showed how much he cares by trying to talk him out of being fake. It was a bit shocking to figure out she was treating him like a cat.

It bugs me that I can't remember the cat's name now, but I liked how Crab Man made Earl put him on the list to turn him back into a champion. Darnell is a trailer park profit.

Anyone up for some "Candy Randy Ice Cream"? :p

Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul, Paul...

This episode was pretty good, Earl seems to be back in form after somewhat of a lackluster episode last week. The cat's name was Sebastian btw. The time after Time was great, as was Earl putting the lyrics in his sentence. Its always refreshing to see Randy stick up for himself and backsass Earl once in awhile too. The Paul bit was as funny as it was odd, I give it B+.

That episode was not great. It was a little disappointing. I felt the story sort of drifted off. I did like a few scenes though. My favorite was Earl and Randy dancing. Another scene that was good was when Earl's friend was saying "I know this sounds weird, but I'm going to kill you if you don't sleep with my mother." The excuses were funny as well and the older man was an enjoyable character.

Carolina Red

Earl and Randy dancing was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. The drive-thru scene was good too, but elsewhere wasn't anything too exciting. But this episode proved once again that it has a great classic rock soundtrack to it.

Wonderwall

Not as funny as last weeks but still pretty damn good. "The lead singer is the most important part. The Stones have Jagger, the Who have Dawtry. And we had this guy. He looked older than both of them put together." - that was a great line. Other memorable scenes were Red Rover and Mr Roboto dance at the end. Earl has done the impossible, making something of Styxx entertaining.

The Penguin
10-20-2006, 12:19 PM
 The Red Rover scene was hilarious! It was painful to watch yet funny at the same time. The awkward silence was great. I also had a lot of fun with "Mr. Roboto" and the strobe light. Minds were blown, a good time was had by all.

The old Earl does seem like the kind of guy that would start a band just to get chicks. Tom the old guy was a fun character, and in the end he even got a chick. :p Things seem to have a way of working themselves out.

Lots of fun this time out, Randy's interaction with Mr. Turtle and Darnell having to say good-bye were great comedic moments ("run faster").

This was a great story. The flashbacks are really telling about the kind of guy Earl used to be. Millie (Roseanne being excellent) was great as the mean, but religious trailer park manager and it's amazing that she became a nun after Earl "spoke" to her. I liked how after all the complicated efforts to give Millie a sign that she should go back that simply talking to her did it. I have to admit, I about cried when she told Earl, "You're my sign."

> You know, I kind of thought it a little last season, but the more he's on, the more I feel that Crab Man is the best character on this show. <

There's supporting evidence for this, in that poignant scene where Darnell had to give up Mr. Turtle. I've got pet reptiles of my own, so I could identify so strongly, I nearly shed a tear. But I told myself; on this show they'll be reunited before the end credits.

Favorite Funny Bit; the Jesus grilled-cheese sandwich (based on a true story, I hope you all know.)
The misunderstanding about the talking donkey was a good joke, too. "Randy! Abort! Abort!" :D

Fantastic episode. Every scene was enjoyable. I loved how Earl added "eth" to almost all of the verbs he spoke. I normally don't like Roseanne very much but she did really well in this. The scenes with Mr. Turtle and Darnell were pretty humorous as well. The scenes that made me laugh the most had to be Earl, Randy, and Joy singing and the dialogue between the orphan girl and Earl.

"Does anyone on your list want a daughter?"
"I think so. Let me check. Oh wait, he wants a son."

I have to admit, I about cried when she told Earl, "You're my sign."I was really touched by that scene also. My Name is Earl is one of those sitcoms that is able to do things like that well.

Good thing Earl brought Catalina along with him this time. It got her more invovled in the show and without her, Earl may have ended up back on the wrong track (it was Jenny McCarthy though!). And they don’t make a Hallmark card that specific. :p

Randy off on his own little adventure was fun to see, it kept him out of Earl’s hair (other than the painfully annoying time with him and Will in the motel) and we learned some more about Darnell and Joy. Crab Man is a lot smarter than he is given credit for.

This is such a great show, I find I just can’t say enough good things about it. The only thing that gets me is sometimes Randy’s whining moves beyond funny to really friggin annoying. He was okay this week and his impatience about needing something to eat gave us some fun moments…

The claymation characters was great. I like how they found a way to work something like that in. I thought it was just going to be a moment or two with Earl based on the previews, but we got all the characters with some significant time and we even got to see Randy in the mirror. And The Muppets win it all! :p

This list item was a little bit different in the sense that Earl didn’t and almost couldn’t make it up to Woody and even though Earl and Randy stealing everything the guy owned hurt him at the time (even if he was too stoned to realize it), it seems it actually worked out for him in the end. So Earl didn’t really do anything to make it up to Woody, he more improved himself which is what Woody wanted for him.

Earl must have been rough on Kenny for him to be on the list so many times. You would have thought that “Picked on Kenny James” would have covered most of it, but it seems Earl did some things that were specifically bad enough that he broke them down into separate list items. Not sure what Earl thought Kenny was going to do with all those bologna sandwiches, but I guess his heart was in the right place.

Exposing him to gambling probably wasn’t the best thing for him (or Earl) though. It was funny when Randy took advantage of Kenny’s vacant house. “Ricooooooo-la!”

Earl was on a hot streak, but using what he believed was built up good karma hurt Catalina because he lost sight of what he was supposed to be doing and focused only on himself.

Well, part of the time he was discovering he had a flying phobia, and later he was doped up on anti-anxiety meds, so he's got that excuse.

BTW: Randy has never been so impressive! It reminded me of the 'Pinky and the Brain' ep* where Brain went too far, and his usually-dumb-and-passive sidekick got assertive about pulling him back into line.

Pretty good episode. Randy got to be the hero and Darnell's anger at Joy on pills was a nice running gag. My favorite part had to be when Earl ate some of the poor girl's only churro of the year.

This episode was nothing short of awesome. Leguizamo delivers yet again in his guest spot, I especially loved his Michael Jackson jacket, the only other gag that came close to toppin that was the painting of Earl and the parents of the dead son( still cant keep his eyes open ). Best episode of the season for me.

This episode was good as an hour-long one. I figure with the original plan (it was first listed as just Part Uno) the end would have come when Diego’s buddies kidnapped Earl.

I loved Earl and Randy dealing with flying for the first time. My first flight was just a couple of years ago so I could relate to it all being new to them. I really enjoyed that aspect.

Early on, Earl was really being a real jerk. I was almost amazed that he was being so insensitive to the reason he and Randy were there. I suppose the way the flight had gone had an effect on him, but insisting on getting a taco (actually two tacos) and risk missing the bus to the village was a bit of surprise. It was nice when he came to his senses though.

John Leguizamo was great as Diego. Earl’s commentary is always neat, but he helped establish the personality of the character and why he acted the way he did. The marriage ceremony was entertaining itself and Diego made it even better when he kept giving Earl chances. Earl had to put forth a lot of effort to get Randy in the spot to marry Catalina. He got to be the hero, but I don’t know how the fiery Latina will react to Randy actually liking her.

Joy on her happy pills was great. The pleasant way she threatened the rude neighbors was hilarious after Darnell couldn’t take it any more.

This was one for the ages. Ye gads, brilliant. The only way to make it better would have been to add a guy who wears a giant light bulb on his head and has a pig for a leg.

And, possibly, to cut that bad scene with the gay guy with glasses. "I am definitely going to have hererosexual sex." Not funny. Yawn.

My favorite parts:

Earl: "No, no, I'm not stealing officer. I'm cleaning. This is my garage."

And then the very clever bit where Earl steals the cop car only to find the cameraman is still inside. Funny, I mean how else do you explain Earl's antics in the car being filmed?

It really hasn't been a great season so far, but this was probably one of the best episodes ever. I'd go as far as to say it topped The Office this week.

The second I saw Randy in the tree, I thought to myself that only a tranc-gun and a trampoline could make this any funnier. Thank you Lord. ;)

Favorite moment:

Joy: Crank up the radio! Find some Wu Tang Clan.
Earl: Since when do you like rap music?
Joy: I'm not cheating on you!

Earl skinning his pecker was classic too. "Oh, that's a lot of gravel." :D

I missed commenting on last week’s episode so I will simply say that it was a great story and very well-done. I’m not really familiar with Timothy Stack, but I think it’s cool to have him on their as ‘himself’. To this week…

When the title and NBC plot line was all about ‘buried treasure’ I didn’t know what the heck we were going to see. It turned out to be an excellent episode. The narration plays such a key in this series working as well as it does and the spin on “My Name Is…” very well-done. Seeing the same story from so many different perspectives and watching all the pieces fit together between the four stars was just fun to watch. I love watching stories develop like a puzzle.

Liberty's husband and his bearded lizard, they're like a bizzaro version of Joy, Darnell and the turtle. My favorite moment of the episode was the two dudes trying to arrange a play date for their pets.

I loved Randy's tests of what drinks faster. That was probably the shortest intro ever 'light beer drinks faster than regular beer' but it was great.

Introducing a sister for Joy was kind of cool, with the revelation about her father last season, it worked perfectly. The realization that Joy had of having her dad while Liberty didn't was a really neat moment and she might even have grown a bit there. And I loved that the sisters had nearly identical husbands personality-wise. "This is Mr. Bearded Dragon."

Randy and Catalina was kind of awkward, but not nearly as awkward as I was expecting. I'll be interested to see what develops from here with those two. I must admit, I just don't really see them together.

And how mean of that audience, to treat him worse when he was being himself, than when he was pretending to be a bigot.Camden doesn't seem real big so it's possible some of the crowd knew Randy "reverted" but as a wrestling fan, I think it's equally likely that they just thought the character changed a little bit.

That scene managed to be hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time- Earl's Mom, in particular, conveyed a real sense of disappointment. "I'll wash these tee shirts and give them to Joy's parents."

Sticking around to provide the kids with an acting father was, indeed, the most decent thing pre-reform Earl ever did, even if his motive (to save the lives of some gerbils) was one of the craziest ones ever.

I gotta say, I just find it so interesting learning about how Earl was before. Everything he did then has shaped what he is trying to do now and I think we gain a greater understanding for him as a person beyond his promise to make up for all his mistakes. I think it's important for us as the viewers to see how things got on the list. It's good to see more of how Darnell got in the picture and witness much more of the fallout of Earl, Jr. not being Earl's son. The effect on Earl's parents was strong and done in a way that managed to maintain a bit of humor while still being sad. Good stuff.

Earl always had some pretty good thoughts in his reflective thoughts that he often has near the end of the episode. I really enjoyed this particular one.

I was a little disappointed that we only got see Burt Reynolds as Richard Chubby on the show one time, but bringing in Norm MacDonald and his SNL-crafted Burt Reynolds impression makes some of the pain go away. I liked having the flashback to earlier this season with "Big" Chubby and his cause of death seemed rather appropriate.

That was a really good episode, but the ending was so shocking, and such a downer that I don't know what to say.

So what happens next season? Do the next 2 seasons take place in jail? Does Earl get out early for good behavior before season 2 starts? Will season 2 be a "2 yrs later" deal?

One of the best episodes of the year.
Crabman's mood swing hair was hysterical.

If any episode benefitted from the extra time, it was this one. It won't be broadcast again intact, so this is a good reason to get the Season 2 DVD.

That was a shocker there at the ending. The most likely resolution next season will probably involve attempts at breaking Earl out of prison. This episode was very good and it will have me coming back for more in the fall. The long length worked very well in its favor and a twenty-two minute episode could not have given it justice. Crabman's trouble with the kids after Joy left was a highlight for me.

"Get a Real Job"
I want to just quickly comment that I really enjoyed last week's episode. Earl was being given such a rough time by the other salesmen and seeing him unload the order himself when the dockers wouldn't help him was very inspiring. It was great seeing all of them buy things from Earl after that.

"The Trial"
Excellent episode, but by the end it was so hard to watch. I'm used to this show making you feel pretty good about the things Earl does for others, but it was just so hard seeing him give up his freedom for Joy and her family. :crying:
