View Full Version : What DC Superheroes would you animate?

I was thinking about the various DC superheroes that have been featured in animated series throughout the years.

Some, like Batman and Superman, have starred in their own show(s).

There are some heroes that have only been guest-stars on other hero's shows.

Some have been part of the Justice League or Superfriends shows, but never had their own series.

Still others, have never been animated at all.

So, which DC superhero (an individual, or a superhero group), would you like to see star in their first animated series?

Any ideas?

I think the Question would be a really interesting character to have his own series. It could be a 40s noir style kind of deal in terms of storytelling, but done in DCAU style.

Initally I was going to say Green Arrow or Huntress, but I had second thoughts. I think Question is the way to go. :)

The Question would be an interesting character to do. He seems to be a mix of a superhero and 1940s detective.

SUPERMAN/BATMAN. It was such a good comic series, and I'm really enjoying the current run. Though the two charachters have been paired up in Worlds Finest and Justice League, but this could adapt classic SUPERMAN/BATMAN stories.

New charachters could also be introduced. Parralax or maybe General Zod? We could have there rogues gallery pair up. Mxy and The Joker. Brainiac and Mad Hatter (Odd chose, I know, but I could see it really working)

However, with Luthor and Darkseid dead I'm unsure another Superman cartoon would work.

For a show on their own... gotta be Green Lantern Corps! Also Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are big enough to carry their own animated shows.

My only regret with the Bruce Timm shows was that they never snuck in an Ambush Bug cameo appearance! I don't think he could have his own show but I'd loved to have seen him show up at some point!

Also recently whilst re-reading Watchmen (for the millionth time!) I thought that it might make a good animated series - obviously aimed at older viewers but I think it would be easier to do as animation than as a live action movie or TV series.

Blue Beetle, when the rights clear up, should be involved in some show.

True. Though I'd prefer Ted Kord over Dan Garret or Jaime Reyes (the two other Blue Beetles).

Anyway, I would absolutely love to see a Young Justice cartoon. The series always had a somewhat cartoony vibe. I'd start with a cast of Robin, Superboy, Impulse, Wonder Girl, Arrowette, Secret and Red Tornado and then go from there (note: I don't think I'd do the show without Superboy, though it may be a problem). It would probably have to be about ten years down the line so that it didn't seem too derivative of Teen Titans, though. People might actually want me to make the series more serious to differentiate the two shows, but that's not YJ is about. So, the primary difference would probably be that there's more focus on the kids as kids with their own civilian lives, while YJ would be what they do to hang out with friends who understand them as opposed to TT and the "24-hour superhero" approach.

Failing that, a solo show about Impulse. Like YJ, an action comedy.

Also, I'd like to see a Green Lantern show, but I'd probably focus on Kyle Rayner because I like him more. It would probably be like how Justice League approached the Flash. They combined cherry-picked bits from both Barry and Wally's mytology. I'd do the same and pick from both Hal stuff and Kyle stuff. The Hal fans would probably hate me for it, though.

Also, just to note, these shows would be stand-alone. If people want to try and shoehorn them in with what Timm and co. started, they may go ahead. However, I'd rather just develop my own take.

The Flash and the Question would be the big two for me (or make it a Question/Huntress show and give it a DCU-meets-Moonlighting kind of vibe).

I also wouldn't mind seeing a JLU spinoff that uses some of the non-big 7 as the main characters. Maybe the Question could borrow a page from the comics version of Batman and break off, starting his own team of Outsiders. Bring Huntress, Bwana Beast, Booster Gold, Ice, Blue Devil and Obsidian with him.

I'm always surprised to see so many people clamoring for a "Green Lanetrn Corps" series. Not that there's anything wrong with the Green Lantern Corps per se, but for an animated series, I think a solo Green Lantern show would be much better.

I can't imagine a Batman or Superman show being any better if it featured dozens Batmen and Supermen, all possessing the same powers/gimmick.

And if the history of GL in the comics is any indication to what "sells" better to wide audience, a solo GL title is always the standard, while books featuring the Corps are usually relegated to mini-series, quarterly releases or short-lived monthlies.

I personally would find a series dedicated to one main character (i.e. Jordan, Stewart, Rayner), with other members of the Corps as occasional guest stars, much more interesting than one devoted to the entire group.

Just my thoughts,

I was doing some research after I posted this question, and I found a few DC heroes that were supposed to get their own series...but never did.

In 1967, Filmation was doing the "Superman/Batman/Aquaman" Hour of Adventure" for CBS. I'm sure that most of you have seen these episodes.

If you haven't, they pop up on the Cartoon Network and some are available on VHS under the "Super Powers Collection" title...with 4 tapes featuring Superman, Batman, Superboy w/Krypto the Superdog, and Aquaman. They, at one time, were available at Suncoast video stores, and still may be.

This show was very successful for CBS and DC Comics. Of course, successful TV shows usually try to be duplicated.

Filmation and DC had planned to do shows featuring The Flash, Metamorpho, Wonder Woman, Plastic Man, the Doom Patrol, the Blackhawks, the Metal Men, and as mentioned above...B'wana Beast. Many of these characters were popular in DC's comics during the 1960s.

There were 2 show scenarios discussed.

All of these characters were not to be featured as "one big superhero team" like the JLA. Instead, some or all, would each have an individual series with possible cross-over action between the series...OR...each hero would get an individual short segment as part of an hour-long show, similar to the Superfriends series.

Aquaman was to somehow inter-connect the individual series, possibly teaming up with these heroes, in a rotation basis...OR...he would "host" the hour-long show, teaming up with heroes in their individual short segments.

I assume that an hour-long show with segments would have been the way to go, because CBS could not flood the Saturday morning schedule with all of these heroes with their individual series. It is possible that only one or two of these heroes, would have actually gotten their own individual series.

These shows, for whatever reason, never got past the earliest planning stages. It would have been fun to see them.

I think that's mainly because no one really wants to pick the one to feature. Fans of Green Lantern all have their favorite who they want in the top spot. Heck, comic fans had been arguing over Hal vs. Kyle for a decade (I'm still a little sore about Hal coming back, even if Kyle gets to be Ion). Whoever they pick, someone will likely be unhappy. So, they figure that they could just spread the focus around between a whole bunch of GLs.

You'll notice that I actually bit the bullet and picked Kyle, because I like his personality more. Hal's a bit too retro for me. John's too boring in the comics and too straight-laced in the cartoon. And Guy just works better in small doses.

But hey, that's just how I see it.

I know he's not really DCU, but I would like to see the DCAU team animate last year's Space Ghost mini.

I'd have also liked to see Bronze Tiger on JLU.

"Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld"

A 1980s-era maxi-series that really rocked, but never fufilled its potential when it later fell victim (like many unfortunate DC Comics characters) to "Crisis on Infinite Earths". However, DCAU has done many a marvelous revamp on other DC characters....

To me, there are two overwhelming considerations that would indicate the timing is just right. The "Lord of the Rings" and "Lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe" movies. That certainly shows there's a big audience out there for this kind of fantasy. Second, just take a look at your comics bookshelves at Borders and Barnes & Nobles. All those shoujo manga books on the bookshelves shows there's certainly an eager female audience out there for the romantic melodrama that the Gemworld is well capable of producing.

Finally, it is arguably the richest comics concept that the 1980s ever produced. I can think of a half dozen angles that could be emphasized: the "Shazam"-like dichotomy between ordinary girl and powerful woman heroine, the "Connecticutt Yankee in King Arthur's Court" aspect of the series as an modern American teenager finds herself thrust into pre-modern faerie environment (with the parallel story of exiled princess "Emmy Winston" experiencing life as a teenager in modern scientific America), intrigues both of the spy thriller and romantic varieties going on with the colorful (literally) nobility, clashing of swords between forces of dark and light, the wonderous imaginative vistas that the Gemworld could present--conceivably, you might even have Amy and Emmy play superhero on Earth by allowing them to exercise their powers under restricted circumstances.

And to top it off i'd dig seeing an animated KINGDOM COME miniseries!!! :D

That's a good suggestion. I'd forgotten about "Amethyst". She had one of the many maxi/mini-series at DC during the 1980s.

The "Tales of the Green Lantern Corps" was a limited/mini-series from 1981 that would also work pretty well.

The "Justice Society" would be fun to see. We got a taste of the JSA in the Cartoon Network's "Justice League" animated series.

As far as the "Shazam!" franchise goes, there would be many characters to use. Captain Marvel and company had an animated series in the 1980s done by Filmation, and of course, who could forget the live action "Shazam!" series that was on CBS Saturday mornings. Captain Marvel could stand a new animated series more respectful of the character, who had been around since 1940.
