View Full Version : Is Hawkgirl Already Married?

I was doing some research on Hawkgirl last night and have come to the conclusion that she may have already married Hawkman!
Now, the Hawkgirl on Justice League is based on the Silver Age Hawkgirl--they look almost identical and her name is "Shayera." However, according to Cartoon Network's JL press materials, they have her full name listed as Shayera Hol. Hawkgirl's maiden name in the Silver Age was Shayera Thal; Hol was Hawkman’s last name!
It will be mighty interesting to see Hawkman if he ever makes an appearance...

Sounds like a subject for the "hoax" thread: "In a very special future episode it is revealed that Hawkgirl and Hawkman are married but separated--that's why she's on Earth. But when Hawkman is caught dating another woman (Steelheart of the "Silverhawks" in a surprise cameo) Hawkgirl flies back home and beats the crap out of him."

Nope, it's true. However, Timm has stated in interviews that he has no "immediate plans" to use Hawkman, so either 1) he won't show up and he just wanted Hawkgirl to use the more familiar name or 2) this was intentional and it will be addressed in a future episode...maybe.

Maxie was just pulling your leg, Karkull. :D
I think it's an interesting idea. I don't know if they'll ever address the issue though. Like some of the others here, I hope that Hawkman doesn't show up, so I prefer to think that it's the "name" explanation that you gave. I still think that it's still an interesting point that you've made, though, and it sure does make Hawkman a possibility. :)

Oops. I thought he was serious.
:o
I'm not too interested in seeing Hawkman anytime soon either, but I'd think it would be hilarious if he shows up at Hawkgirl's doorstep only to find out that the Flash was going to stay over that night!

I've said it before and I'll gladly say it agian. I hope we NEVER see Hawkman in this series. He is the number one character I never want to see here. Why? Becuase all it will do is diminish Hawkgirl into a shadow of him and make people ask
"Why didn't they just use Hawkman instead?" and "Why do we nooed two of them?" and that will eventually result in Hawkgirl bashing and her possible leaving of the show.
We have a great character here, folks. They gave us fanboys a nod to Hawkman with the "Is there a Hawkboy?" quote. That's even too much for me.
Of course, I fell for Shayera back in the late 70's when she had just become a full time meber of the JLofA. :D

Howdy,
Good catch, Karkull. I hadn't acutally noticed that at the time.
Some alternate suggestions:
1. Shayera Hol and Katar Hol are brother and sister, not husband and wife.
2. At least in John Ostrander's world, the way Thanagarian names work is not quite like ours. Paran Katar was Katar Hol's father, so Katar Hol's son would be "Hol Blahblahblah." So, Shayera Hol and Katar Hol are not necessarily related in any way, because their "Family" names are "Shayera" and "Katar," respectively.
3. Someone made a mistake =8^). This is actually not as far-fetched as it may sound, because I don't think Shayera Thal (Silver-Age Hawkgirl, not Modern-Age Hawkwoman) was ever referred to as "Shayera Hol," even when she was married to Hawkman/Katar Hol. The Modern-Age Hawkwoman was never married to Katar Hol, to my knowledge (the continuity gets way too confusing).
The JL's Hawkgirl really seems like an amagalmation of the Silver Age and Modern Age Hawkgirl/woman (Silver Age costume, with Modern Age attitude), so there's really not much help there. Of course, the simplest explanation is usually the best, and you're probably right and Hawkgirl is already married (and pining away slowly for her dear husband Katar back on Thanagar...nah).

May I toy with the idea that Hawkman is a villain and Shayera is hiding from him on Earth? ;)

I see no problem with Hawkman making an appearance on JL. Since it won’t happen for a while, if it happens at all, Hawkgirl will be better defined and we’ll have grown to like her more. Don’t assume that people will automatically prefer Hawkman.

--she's a (young) widow who kept her husband's name. If he was killed in the line of duty, it might explain her bitterness. Maybe she's on earth looking for the guy who did it...maybe she finds herself falling for someone else (Flash?) but is fearful of dishonoring her late husband's memory...so much conflict...so many possibilities....

Hawkman's death and her keeping his name is a good possibility, DR. BLECH, but her being on earth was by accident. According to the press materials she was zapped to Earth accidentially on a zeta-beam.

I can't wait for Part 2 tonight. It's only another hour or so from airtime. I really hope this episode rocks a la Hawkgirl. ;)
I haven't seen much of this Hades character. I liked what I saw in Part 1--very menacing. Is he a recurring character in the JL universe?

I don't think Lord Hades is a JL villain. I think he's only being used for this episode because of his ties to Greek mythology.

Batman80,
Thanks. Did you catch the scene (in the promo. for Part 2) where Wonder Woman is being electrified (or something like that) with some type of ray? I don't know her limitations, so I don't know if this even phases her. BTW, I liked her reaction once the team has basically said that their only other choice is to band together to help her. Good chemistry stuff. :)

Um, why did this thread suddenly go wildly off topic?
Spider, did you mean to start a new thread?

No problem. I just thought it was very strange. Like you were in the thread and tried to hit "New Thread" but hit "Reply" instead. Which I have done in the past. :o
Back on topic: Um, I like Hawkgirl too!

Maybe she's married to a real jerk who doesn't support her career, and that's why she was AWOL in "Enemy" and "Paradise."
