According to Jerry Beck....

"Move over Scooby-Doo! Zorianna Kit reports in Hollywood Reporter (Jan. 17): "America's favorite rotund cat Garfield, his dull-witted canine cohort Odie and their perpetually single owner Jon Arbuckle are making their way to the big screen as a live-action/CGI feature. 20th Century Fox has optioned feature rights to "Garfield," the long-running comic strip that John Davis will produce through his Davis Entertainment.
"Toy Story" scribes Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow will write the script, which will focus on the sibling rivalry between Garfield and Odie. The feature will be live action, with a computer-generated Garfield. "Garfield," created by Jim Davis (no relation to John Davis), was first published in 1978. Over the years, the 27-pound orange- and black-striped cat became known for his laziness, wry remarks and love of lasagna."
No word yet on who will replace the distinctive voice of Lorenzo Music."

AT LAST! My Garfield dream has come true!A Garfield feature motion picture! *sigh* But, WHY did it have to happen after Lorenzo Music died?

It's going to be very difficult to find a new voice for Garfield. Lorenzo Music's was just perfect.

Yeah, Music's voice was perfect for Garfield. For Jon Arbuckle, they should use the actor who provided his voices in the cartoon series.

I guess it depends on if the guy really looks like Jon or not. They should get someone who looks like him, I think, but is still a good actor to pull it off. I just hope the actor who plays him doesn't make him a cartoon. Since about the mid-90s, Jon in the comic strips has been getting more and more cartoony each year. Just not a realistic character anymore. In fact, the whole strip has been going down the tubes for a while. Been getting a little bit better in the past two weeks or so, but, still, this is a strip that peaked long ago.

There were actually two different people who voiced Jon. I don't remember the name of the original actor (Iknow the first name was "Sandy"), but I remember the voice that they used for Garfield & Friends. It was Tom Huge.

I think Joel Hodgson, who played Joel Robinson on Mystery Science Theater 3000 would make a good live-action Jon in the Garfield movie.

That "Sandy" fellow who voiced Jon in his first animated appearance (on the 1982 TV special, "Here Comes Garfield") is Sandy Kenyon. I don't know why they replaced him with Huge but I personally think Huge does do a better voice job anyway.

Speaking of MST3K, I think the original voice of Tom Servo, Josh Weinstein, would make a purrrr-fect replacement for Garfield's voice. His voice sounds ALMOST like Lorenzo Music (only just a tad younger-sounding).
