It's been many years, but I still remember the disappointment I felt back in the 8th grade when the brightest cartoon on television ended abruptly at Episode 13 and I was left slack jawwed as to what happen.

Many years later, the show finally gets its due DVD release in Japan (http://www.dqshrine.com/index2.htm) and I'm wondering what the chances are that this Toriyama property might get a US release soon and maybe even hit Toonami. Toriyama stuff is usually gold for Cartoon Network and this show's resemblance to DBZ is pretty uncanny. Seems like money in the bank for whoever snags it. I asked the FUNimation Rep (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=123385&page=107), but does anyone think any other companies might now have their eye back on the show? Or is it too old and too late?

Heard the reason for the show ending at 13 episodes was because the licensor removed Toriyama's name from the credits and Toriyama threatened to sue. I also got that from DQShrine but they only call that a rumor.

I'd imagine that current licensors would be looking into this show if the games are popular enough. I know DQ8 sold pretty well and there's Rocket Slime coming our way but I don't know if it's enough to popularize the anime here.

The DS game, Dragon Quest: Joker is also coming down the pipe... sooo... seems like easy money.

13 episodes isn't a lot these days. The marketability is limited at best.

Actually it had 46 episodes.

So is there a ending to this? If not then they can keep it.

46 episodes in all that aired to completion over in Japan, but here in America only made it to episode 13.

So, there's an end, we just never got to see it.

Guys, I think your getting Dai no Daibouken and Abel Yuusha mixed up. Abel Yuusha had 43 episodes, while Dai had 46. And what I'm worried about that boxset release is if it's the same toned-down masters as the reairing. (Which means light edits in a simular fashion as Pokemon.)

It was a Saban production in America, wasn't it? Saban usually takes anime series and gives them 13 episodes to "prove" themselves in the american market. But since the majority of those shows were stuck on early morning hours where ratings are dead low, it's a possibility that the show was canned due to lack of interest.

However, I'm not ruling out the possibility that Toriyama threatened to sue. Ater all, in Saban's version of Dragonball and Dragonball Z, they put his name as the creator but discredited all the other japanese producers at Toei. If anything, Saban wouldn't had credited Toriyama if Toriyama wouldn't threaten to sue.

Ok then bring the rest of that sucker over and give us a box set.

Looks like something Media Blasters would pick up considering Teknoman.

who knows, the DBZ craze has died down a lot, the animation is old and has no large fanbase, even DQ8 didn't do that well for them to take a risk, its a shame too.

I'd rather see dai no dabouken on dvd, amazing show, even without an ending its worth it.

I wonder how good this really was. Sometimes the "unknown" can take on a prestige simply based on its rarity and limited showing. I remember seeing a little bit of it, and to this day I'm still not sure if it was boring generic adventure or FUN adventure.

But, FUNi licensed DB and DBZ. Saban helped get it on syndication and help in the editing process(besides, Saban wasn't even involved with DB).

As for the credits, another reason is that Toei never gave them individual credits for the DB and DBZ episodes.

Never gave them or FUNimation just didn't want them?

As for Toriyama's lawsuit being a rumour, every other forum I've been to stated that it was a lawsuit. It just seems to big of an issue to pass of as "rumour".

The former. I mean, they got episode previews from DBZ with no audio in them.

Well they obviously got Toriyama to do the character designs since he did it for the video game series. He didn't pen the story though so it's really not his show.

Well, since there was no Japanese audio for the preview it would default to the English audio. For some of the DVDs the episode would play in Japanese and then it would switch over to English audio for the preview. For other DVDs the English preview was only located under the special features.

Funi doesn't think so with Dr. Slump.

toriyama did the DQ designs for the games, the anime is based on the designs from the game, that is why they are like Toriyamas but not really his designs.

Not necessarily. Dragon Quest is at least bigger now than it was back when Saban licensed the anime. I don't see why it'd be a problem picking it back up.
