View Full Version : The End of an Era: JETIX on ABC Family's last day

An era ends later this morning (Eastern time zone), as ABC Family airs its final JETIX lineup. After today, the block will be exclusive to Toon Disney, so if you don't get it, it's either jetix.tv, or SOL.
So, what have been your favorite memories of the ABC Family version of the block? For me, I'll never forget the day the monkeys invaded Power Rangers Generations. The episode ("A Date with Danger" from the Space era), kept getting screwed up, starting and restarting, and even changing to Dino Thunder and then back again. My favorite part was Ethan exploding into the PRIS logo.

I've got quite a few, Beyblade, I watched it from the very beginning. I loved it, I was disappointed to see it go. Kong, another show I liked, I was ecstatic when they decided to bring it back. I still remember the marathon they did to promote the movie where they showed the Atlantis/Kong feature. SRMTHG is another, that's a rare show and I'm afraid since I don't get toondisney, I won't find another one like it. One of my favorites.
I also remember when they started airing Gargoyles again, now THAT was good stuff. :D

Watching and taping the four Digimon seasons off ABC Family (Pre-Jetix and Jetix era) is definitely a highlight for me.
Other than that my other viewings were Medabots, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Gargoyles.

For me, the only thing Jetix is good for is Power Rangers. Then, they gave ToonDisney first-run status with that show. Now, ToonDisney and ABC broadcast are the only channels I'll have to rely on for watching it. Also, even though I get ToonDisney, something still bothers me a little about ABC Family dropping Jetix. I just hope they don't make a Jetix channel that's obscure, and give it first-run status of PR.

Wait, what weekend is Jetix last on ABC Fam? Is PRMF moving off ABC Family as well? I would actually like to be able to see the final 8 episodes.
ABC announced months and months ago that it was dropping Jetix come September. None of Jetix's programming will remain on ABC Family, as ABC Family wants to use the time to program its own shows rather than kids programming.

At least it didn't RECUT already edited footage to the point where an episode made jack squat scene.

I truly don't like this idea. All these shows, many of which are from MY youth, shouldn't be enclosed within Toon Disney's boundaries. I want them as accessible and UN-edited as possible for all kids.
And for those of you who loved Gargoyles as much as a person should (ANY person, because it's the best cartoon in the history of all history) don't forget to petition Disney to make sure they release the second half of season 2 on DVD. Let them know a zillion people will buy it!

Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, so what station is airing Mystic Force? I don't get Toon Disney because I had to cancel my Digital Cable as it got too costly since I hardly had time to watch anything.

Your local ABC station might have it if they haven't pre-empted the kids block for sports or whatever.

Actually, it's Oct. 21.
But there are only four -- 10/21, 10/28, 11/4 and 11/25. Last year, there were nine.

Favorite memories?
When I wake up in the morning early, I usually set my alarms for 8AM. Cell phone, television, and radio alarm clock.
None of those three tend to wake me up immediately.
But... for a while, alongside hearing 99X and "1! Emergency! 2! Dekaranger..." from my cell phone, since the institution of Jetix, I also heard...
"Deep in the mountains, secret ninja academies train our future protectors. Ancient scrolls told of three who would be chosen above the others. Three who would become..."
"There's a light, in the distance, we can see them coming closer! With the force of ages, centuries gone by, protetors of the right, defenders sworn to fight..."
"Heroes on your side, heroes for all time, out to save the universe! No matter where you are, whether here or far, you can always call out..."
Now, here's the funny thing. If a good episode was on, I would actually wake up. If not, I would fall back asleep. For example, on Wednesday, "Chase Into Space" Part 1 aired. I woke up enough to see the Megazords destroyed, and the mentors leave. After that? I saw A-Squad versus B-Squad.
... I'm never waking up now.

Any idea what day and time?
That's where it gets tricky. It's at different times from city to city -- some don't show it at all.
You need to go to tv.yahoo.com or any other site that provides listings, set it up for your zip code and look for yourself.

Oh boy, yet another channel rids itself of all animated programming in favor of re-runs, paid programming or other live-action fare. TBS & TNT did it back in 1998, and now ABC Family follows suit. Honestly though, aside from Power Rangers Generations & Gargoyles, I don't care too much for Jetix either on ABC Family or Toon Disney. And Toon Disney has fallen off HARD from what it was 3-4 years, similar to fellow contemporary Boomerang (both channels which are back-to-back on my cable system, TWC of NYC.) Both seem to be going down the same path, although Toon Disney is far ahead of Boomerang as far as shelving all of their old-school program libraries.
I've heard that the show "The 700 Club" a staple of the "Family" channel no matter which owner has it (Fox, ABC) , has been a pain in the ass to those who've owned the Family channel these last few decades and have tried to program a morning schedule. Perhaps you can blame them for being one of the factors that led ABC Family to can animated programming. Why did TBS & TNT do so again?

Sucks to be you, Our ITV is trying to shake everything Childrens' programing wise off to it's own channel (Which is slightly easier to access than Jetix might be mind but it's still tonk) by telling OFCOM (The same ofcom that had the dubious honer of being called into lipservice in justifying the ruining of the dreams of many otaku last month) they want out of the obligation to air so many hours of "Children's programing" a day on ITV.
This is to somehow allow them to air mroe repates of drama like heartbeat and screwed up remakes of the price is right staring that tit that won I'm a celeberity, get me out of here.

I thought that since, for example, Desperate Housewives and America's Funniest Home Videos air at 8 and 7 on the east coast and air at 8 and 7 on the west coast and that the sporting events that ABC and most other networks air are live, I was guessing that PR: Mystic Force normally airs at 12:00 and 12:30 like on the east coast and would be pre-empted for games starting at 12:30 PST. I didn't know that the ABC Kids schedule has different times for the shows.

I need someone to confirm this for me: Sorry if I'm late to the proverbial game, but is it true that Disney and tampering with and editing the classic PR series? Because that would be outright ridiculous. I dunno if it's just me, but in Disney's re-runs of MMPR these last few years I've noticed a distinct lack of the vocal background songs (made by The Mighty RAW a.k.a Ron Wasserman) like "Go Green Ranger" "I Will Win" and the like. Has Disney been tampering with this as well, or am I just not watching enough episodes?

I can't get Toon Disney so I'm really annoyed by this move. Couldn't they at least finish showing W.I.T.C.H.? Ending halfway through the season just seems cruel. And what's with joking around about these shows leaving the air for good? It's so frustrating when a show goes off the air before they air them all!
I can’t say that I’ll really miss the other shows that much. I tried A.T.O.M., NASCAR Racers, and Oban Star-Racers but none really caught my interest. Clancy Brown was great as Paine but the rest of A.T.O.M. reminded me too much of the old formula eighties cartoons.
I will miss some of the old Marvel cartoons like X-Men TAS and even Spider-man TAS. I guess I have to give up any chance of ever seeing all of Spider-man Unlimited; I missed one episode because ABC Family jacked around with the schedule so much. Maybe now that these shows are finally off the air for good (?) we can get a DVD release. I doubt Spider-man Unlimited will ever make it to DVD, though.
I’ll also miss The Tick but at least that’s coming out on DVD.

Is that the Jetix website? Because all I could find there were some short video clips. I would love to see Jetix go online with it’s shows. If nothing else, I wish they would put them on i-Tunes.

Well, TBS still shows Futurama, Family Guy, and The Oblongs, but I know what you mean. I think it hurt worse when USA dropped their animation block.

I don't know about tampering with episodes, but it seems like there are some that they'll never air. I remember when they were going to show "Mr. Billy's Wild Ride", but they didn't, and that's probably because of the time that space shuttle exploded. They won't air the "A Friend In Need" mini-series either.

Has Disney been tampering with this as well, or am I just not watching enough episodes?Disney has made numerous edits to pre-WF episodes. However, most episodes run fully intact ("Today on Power Rangers" and "Next time on Power Rangers" sometimes absent). A lot of buildings being destroyed were removed from what I've heard. However, the only edits I've ever noticed were one in Green with Evil (part 4 I think, but I'm not certain) and the worst edit ever, Journey's End, Part 2 (they edit out a lot of suicide stingwinger bombings, resulting in a little girl being saved from nothing).
All of the original songs play as they should. However, Disney may need to pay extra for the fight songs used in episodes 41-250 should they decide to release a DVD.
I remember when they were going to show "Mr. Billy's Wild Ride", but they didn't, and that's probably because of the time that space shuttle exploded. They won't air the "A Friend In Need" mini-series either. You are correct about Mr. Billy's Wild Ride, but it's not that they won't air A Friend in Need, it's that they can't. Presently, no one owns the rights to Kamen Rider footage, so Disney can't legally show any episodes of Power Rangers (or Masked Rider for that matter) which includes footage, American or Japanese, with characters based on Kamen Rider. Thus, A Friend in Need is out unless Disney deems it important enough to pay for rights (even if only for those three episodes). If they ever decide to release some DVDs, it could be something they'd look into, but for random PRG episodes...

What is iTunes?
It's basically Apple computer's online music and video store for their i-Pod MP3/video player. A lot of television shows are now available for download to your i-Pod or computer. Most episodes cost one dollar (USA). A lot of episodes are available the day after they air on television (Lost, Battlestar Galactica, etc.). Quality is great on an i-Pod but the resolution isn't high enough to really enjoy watching on a big-screen television. Still it's better than nothing.
I'm not an Power Rangers fan but I wouldn't be surprised if it's on i-Tunes, based upon the show's popularity. I wish someone would open the gate so that anything was available online. I can think of a lot of old shows that I've loved that are too obscure or too few episodes to ever make it to DVD that could at least be sold online instead (see my profile for examples).

I wonder why they aren't showing "Dark Wish". Well at least it'll be out on DVD on September 26.That's probably why. I'm guessing they want it to be a motivation to buy the DVD like last year's Wormhole. This year, though, they probably decided to show it once or twice just to get some ratings (and show off the DVD) before it became old news.
I think we'll see Dark Wish on TD again sometime around December or January. ABC Kids might see it then too, now that they have two episodes per week.

That's what annoys me the most about this drop. All of the shows you listed, along with Mystic Force, are ending mid-storyline, and the only one people without Toon Disney will be able to catch the rest of is Mystic Force. Even then, you have to worry about your local ABC channel pre-empting it for sports or specials.
Would it have killed them to give the block an extra few months and run out the end of the year? At least some of the shows could finish their stories that way.

Yeah, except they never finished. In general, they showed them in order except they skipped the very first episode, The Tick vs. the Idea Men (?), probably because of the guns but I don't know. They also inexplicably ran one episode something like three times in a row even though the guide showed different episodes. Very sloppy work. The last episode scheduled to be shown was replaced with an episode of W.I.T.C.H. instead. I probably never would have watched W.I.T.C.H. if my TiVo hadn't recorded that initial episode due to a schedule mistake.
