The way I see it, Mephisto is responsible for all of the Marvel's biggest crossover events. Avengers Disassembled, House of M, Decimation and Civil War.
Here is my point of view:
Over the years, Mephisto messed with many heroes, X-Men, X-Factor, The Avengers, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, he pretty much created Ghost Rider. He was in all respect untouchable, he can not be beaten. He is too powerful.

In the end his actions caused the Marvel Universe to be in the state it is now, War.

He messed with Fantastic Four and their son, manipulated Master Pandemonium, and the end result of that was Wanda's two children. The loss of her children caused her to have a mental nervous breakdown, causing the death of Hawkeye, Vision and others, and the result of Avengers Disassembled. Then followed the House of M, again by Wanda's doing, and then there was the "No More Mutants" Decimation. The end result of that plus the Secret War Fury had became the Civil War that is happening now. In the end on the Nightcrawler series, Mephisto told him that a war is coming and he asked for Nightcrawler not to get involved, and for that he would spare his loved ones. That war he spoke of (I think) is the Civil War.

So what do you think? Is my theory sound? Is Mephisto is the biggest cosmic manipulator than even the Grandmaster, Beyonder, or the Stranger?

Wow, so what you're saying is, "The Devil made me do it."?? :p

Mephisto is a great manipulator, but there's still "free will" in the Marvel universe, in my opinion...and I still think Scarlet Witch isn't as crazy as she wants everyone to believe.

he pretty much created Ghost Rider.

No, that was a different devil...you have to remember, there are something like 30 different versions of Hell in the Marvel Universe...the devil that created Ghost Rider was, back in the 70's, called Satan...now in the current series, they're calling him Lucifer...Mephisto has had dealings with Ghost Rider before now, but he's not the only devil in the Marvel universe...

He pretended to be Lusifer. Here is a Wiki quote:

As years passed, Naomi Kale returned to spy on Johnny, and while glad to see him growing into a happy young man, she still feared the curse Johnny had in him and bargained a deal with Mephisto to help spare him. Unfortunately, Mephisto betrayed Naomi on her death bed, swearing that Johnny will not become the true Spirit of Vengeance, the Ghost Rider but still will become ‘a’ Ghost Rider.
Unaware of what was happening behind his back; Johnny followed the Simpson’s into their own traveling stunt show – the Crash Simpson Stunt Cycle Extravaganza. Crash had become a real father figure in Johnny’s eyes, and when Johnny learnt of his life threatening Cancer, Johnny turned to the Occult, in search of answers. His studies led to him to a spell which supposedly could summon Satan himself. Johnny unaware that he in fact had summoned Mephisto. Johnny sold his soul to Mephisto in return for Crash’s cancer to be cured. Mephisto did cure Crash, however Crash died not to soon later in a stunt, trying to jump over 22 cars. Johnny, still at the mercy of Mephisto, believed he would lose his soul to Mephisto, until he was saved by Roxanne who proclaimed her love for Johnny, and drove Mephisto away with the purity of her emotion. However Mephisto would return.
Johnny, unaware that Mephisto had bonded him with the demon Zarathos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zarathos) as an act of revenge (breaking the deal he made with Naomi Kale) for not being able to obtain Johnny's soul, was transformed into a Ghost Rider, a leather-clothed skeleton, his head cloaked in a sheath of flame, the night after Crash’s death.

I don't think he's behind Civil War, or that the Nightcrawler series was foreshadowing it.

Actually, since he reappeared in House of M and IIRC is still on the loose, I've suspected Mad Jim Jaspers is behind Civil War.

It fits his MO: get the government to outlaw superpowers and hunt down and eliminate all heroes and villains. Then, when no one's left to oppose him, destroy reality.

I stand corrected. I remember reading some of the early Ghost Rider tales from the 70's and distinctly remember the figure Johnny sold his soul to was called "Satan", but I didn't realize it was Mephisto.

However, I remember that Blaze became seperated from Zarathos, and Dan Ketch became the "Real" Ghost Rider, (am I correct?) So I'm left wondering who is the current Ghost Rider that Johnny Blaze is bonded with in the new series.

Same goes for the new 2006 Ghost Rider that is going on now, so far its only been 2 issues. Although so far there has been no mention of Mephiso, Ghost Rider escaped from hell and released Lucifer himself by accident. And thats the real Lucifer. But as far as the story goes, Mephiso still created Ghost Rider.
