Kid #1: So what do you get for allowance these days?
Kid #2: 50 bills a week with stock options.
Kid #1: Cool. So are they doctors, lawyers, or Jews?

Mom: What, you want an allowance? You'd just spend it on kiddie stuff like trading cards and video games and crystal meth.

Odd... Shin Chan's front shouldn't be an issue, considering the age of the character. Probably playing it safe, than risking it, which I perfectly understand. But still...I wonder how the elephant jokes will work...

Regardless, I am enjoying the english dub, even more than the original japanese version, which is usually rare. As one said, I really hope Adult Swim licenses the series to it's full. The only worry is if FUNimation will send the episodes to Adult Swim in the correct order. I know these were handpicked, but I just hope FUNimation decides to show them by airdate order. (which I know will be extremely hard to do so...)

Actually the Japanese version might have edited that, of course I could be wrong but they have before in comedy situations in anime. Maybe to make fun of the Japanese law or something.

Again, AS or FUNi might not have anything to do with that. The Japanese might have done it for comedy.

I've noticed that when Adult Swim executives love a show, they will commit all their resources to making it somewhat of a hit. Therefore, I can wager that if Shin Chan scores over 300,000, it will be licensed.

Actually, Shin's penis was there in the original, as I recall. Heck, there's a quick shot where you can see it in the third short on the english dub (You won't notice it, more than likely.). However, I doubt this was done by FUNimation. It's more so likely Adult Swim did it, considering the crude way it was edited. If it was FUNimation, something tells me it would have been edited so Shin wouldn't even have it.

It also wasn't edited on Saturday's episode, and it was on screen longer.

Jesus, it feels like Boy Bliss in here. Back on the content, I thought Monday's episode wasn't as good as Saturday's. Probably because the longer episodes felt more padded and visual heavy with little chance of re-write.

I was remarking this to Mecca and Josh in a chat while watching this, but I'll say it here too: This show rocks. It's an anime comedy that's actually... FUNNY. I can't tell you how many times I've been disappointed in the genre in the last one and a half years. Mostly chuckles at best, with actual laughs few and far between. By contrast, Crayon Shin-Chan's dub has consistent laughs, and not desperation chuckles but actual LOL moments. Seriously, the overly positive reaction I'm having with this show is like when I watched Excel Saga for the first time, and that's definitely a good thing.

I'll add to the train: Adult Swim, please pick up this show.

EDIT:

You know - something really nice about this show. I can imagine first glance viewers who don't know any better would become laothe to the character designs which are supposed to look this way, but I was talking with a group of friends earlier and we all agreed that if you actually pay attention, the animation on Shinchan is actually done very well. Don't pay attention to the character designs, but instead look at the animation (which is very fluid - case in point the Ench-Man transformation sequence at the end of this ep), the gestures (which, when in full movement, really area full of life, and don suffer from the usual stiff stock anime poses), and the facial expressions which can vary from nonexistant (Shin Chan) to all over the map (Shin's mother). For such crude designs they actually animate pretty well.

Shin Chan Depressed "Dad will you buy me a shot gun"-HA

This was my first time with the Shin-Channingans and I'm kind of mixed. The animation looked like hell (but then again I'm not one who cares how nice a show looks on AS). Alot of the jokes are funny but I dunno it feels almost like your watching an old movie that's been completely redubbed to the point that there's no connection between what's really happenning and what your hearing. It's certainly funnier than Milk Chan but I wonder how much is due to the show actually being funny or just the americanized staffs version of it.

Also, for the episode, I'd give it a 4/5.

I have to agree with Speedy. Most comedy animes suck horribly. The only good one I can think of right now outside of this is Lupin and it's not even a pure comedy. Hell, some Lupin stuff doesn't have any comedy, like the Pycal OAV for instance. It was one of my favorites but little comedy to be found in it.

This show's re-dub is basically a bunch of veteran anime VA's having fun doing some ad-lib and probably giggling like crazy in the booths the whole time.
Hey, guys. I'm one of the co-writers of the English teleplays on Shin-Chan. We're all glad how (generally) positive the reaction has been to the show. So, thanks for watching! Anyway, I thought I'd take a moment to explain how the English-language scripting process actually works.

FUNi receives translated scripts of the original Japanese episode. These translations are very literal, and precious little of the actual Japanese dialog jokes (sight gags do fine, of course) translate into English/American. And by “precious little” I mean "none."

Anyway, FUNi head writer Jared Hedges (he did/does most of the scripting on YuYu, DBZ, FMA, etc.) brought together myself and four other writers with backgrounds in TV comedy.

Every week for ten weeks, we each went off with a couple vignette and essentially re-wrote them, taking care to loosely match the original Japanese story and themes, and the characters’ lip-flap, of course.

All during this, there was a consistent level of debate as to how ribald the dialog could be, and how many references to American pop culture we should allow. So some eps airing may have more dirty jokes, others less. It takes a while for a TV show to find its voice. That’s just how it goes.

After our vignettes were done, Jared and another writer would go and re-write stuff, before sending the whole thing out yet again to Evan Dorkin & Sara Dwyer of Space Ghost/comic book fame. The duo then added some more jokes, re-wrote dialog, etc.

Finally, their draft went back to FUNi, where the voice director Zach Bolton (also ADR director of the comedy anime Desert Punk, among others) worked with the voice actors in the studio to record the final product. This gave yet another chance for joke punch-up in the booth and adjustments for lines that didn't quite fit the flaps... and add more character to the show through the voice acting (Principal Ench's accent, for example, was an addition made after the scripts were written, and obviously added a lot more humor). By the time the script(s) got back to Zach, there would sometimes be 5 or 6 different alternate jokes for each line since we weren't sure what jokes would play well and pass through the various levels of approval. This left Zach with the daunting task of sifting through it all to find the jokes that worked best.

And that’s how many people it takes to write an abortion joke!

Interesting-Thanks for the informative post!

So far the results have been pretty succesful comedically. After the debacle that was Milk-Chan I don't think I ever want to see a straight translation of a Japanese comedy again.

(I've always been a fan of Dorkin/Dyer from way back in the Space Ghost days. They wrote some of the classic hilarious early episodes.)

Now this is more like it. I laughed out loud more with this episode than the previous episodes ( what a joy it was to see Ench Man again). The only things I didn't like were the sequence with the baby climbing the table and some of the "adult trying to be shockingly adult" dialogue. And I forgot to mention in my previous posts I enjoyed the ED song as well.

Thanks for this post. I always love hearing about the process for this kind of stuff. Thanks also for your hard work in making this show something worth watching. I'm sure the purists are all having a cow, but what you said about none of the Japanese jokes making sense is very true, and generally you either get a clumsy attempt to leave it be, or just a really poor english joke to use as an equivilant. Watching Shin-chan and actually laughing at the dialogue is great, and I hope that this show doesn't meet the same fate as the equally brilliant Lupin III dub's Adult Swim run.

This was simply because Ench-man stole the show. And as for censoring that one word.....well it kinda fits with Ench-man's line afterwards: "Oh yeah, the censors are gonna LOVE that one."

I'm hoping we see more of Ench-man in the future however. But the Tiger Lady's gotta go. (So far she hasn't done anything other than steal stuff and she's basically furry bait as of right now)

As for the rest of the episode, well it had it's moments but like I said, Ench-man stole the show.

I'll try to catch it tonight. It seems fantastic from the reactions and promos. I loved all of the Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer episodes of Space Ghost, so it looks good. I slighty remember enjoying this when it was on KIKU.

Jerry Jewell as Happy Bunny turned Tortured and Miserable Bunny...FTW! I had a feeling that the bunny was done by the same person who voices Jimmy Kudo.

As for the some other seiyuu voices:

1. Yes, that was indeed Gwendolyn Lau (Sciezka) as Penny's mother.

2. When it comes to the rest of the regular characters that have appeared so far:

Shin - Laura Bailey
Hiro - Chuck Huber
Mitzi - Cynthia Cranz
Hima - Colleen Clinkenbeard
Maso - Colleen Clinkenbeard
Georgie - Brina Palencia (Brina was definitely in "Yue" mode in tonight's episode :anime: )
Penny - Carrie Savage
Ai - Monica Rial
Mr. K - Christopher Sabat
Principal Ench - Jason Liebrecht
Miss Anderson - Caitlin Glass
Miss Katz - Clarine Harp
Miss Polly - Jamie Marchi
Action Bastard - Troy Baker
Lollipop - Kate Oxley

She still works with Bang Zoom & New Generation. She has done a few very small roles in FUNi's Samurai 7 & Fullmetal Alchemist but still worked with her other companies. Maybe she did move to Texas, shes doing a lot of voices & upcoming voices for FUNi lately. Although I believe I saw her named credited in Kamichu! which is a new release by New Generation.

I think FUNi is just really trying to expand with many different VA's. Its really making them a high quality dub company.

They even got Scott McNeil(Ocean Group) to voice Al & Ed's father in Fullmetal Alchemist. And Johnny Yong Bosch had a main character role in an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist where Carrie Savage also played a main character of that episode.

Scott McNeil is all the ways in Canada, either they went to him to record all the lines or maybe he went to Texas for a while. Maybe they are doing the same with Carrie Savage.

Dammit, it's the bunny episode again. Yeah it sucks that it's not a new one. On the other hand... I'm glad this show is standing up to repeat viewings. It's always a possibility that after the initial surprise of jokes wears off, the second viewing isn't nearly as good.

Not so with this show; I still laughed numerous times, even though I saw this episode before. And I even caught some dialog that went by me the first time. I think part of it has to do with the great comic performances of the cast; they deliver the lines so well that even the way they SAY the lines gets a laugh.

Just saw the Bunny episode on Saturday.

L...O...L...

Shin-chan is becoming my favorite show on Adult Swim. The conceptual humor from the Japanese side is amusing enough, but add it the extra dirty content and jokes about CSI and stuff in the dubbed version and its a total laugh riot! The fact these episodes are from the middle of the series and already have firmly established a working universe adds to the appeal. I'll watch this as much as I can if AS picks it up!

Well, even though an actor may be featured in a title recently released doesn't mean it was recently recorded. KamiChu! probably was as Geneon tends to record each volume seperately.

It's never been fully elaborated if Savage has moved or not, though she did indirectly confirm she did the Negima trailer narration on the AOD forums. There's no real way to currently tell if she has moved there or not.

I think FUNi is just really trying to expand with many different VA's. Its really making them a high quality dub company.

While I'm not saying featuring actors from different coasts isn't interesting or unwanted, but the concept itself doesn't instantly make a company a high quality dub company. If the actors fits the character however... (don't take that as an implication I didn't think a certain actor fit).

They even got Scott McNeil(Ocean Group) to voice Al & Ed's father in Fullmetal Alchemist. And Johnny Yong Bosch had a main character role in an episode of Fullmetal Alchemist where Carrie Savage also played a main character of that episode.

Zarah Little (http://www.crystalacids.com/database/person/2568/zarah-little/) was also in FMA, and Patrick Seitz (http://www.crystalacids.com/database/person/3899/patrick-seitz/) was credited for the 2nd episode of Shin chan though I think he only did walla (crowd noises).

In fact, Sean Schemmel lives in New York. Every time he has to record Goku he's flown down to Texas.

FUNimation isn't the only company to do this either. New Generation Pictures has been doing it as well. For instance, Samantha Inoue Harte (http://www.crystalacids.com/database/person/1827/samantha-inoue-harte/) was in Daphne in the Brilliant Blue.

Indeed, though having the ADR director (Scott McClennan) fly up there to do it was pretty unusual. The only other example of such a thing I can recall was having Barry Watson (and maybe even more FUNimation staff) commute to Vancouver to supervise the dubbing of Dragon Ball Z.

On another note, schizophrenia is misspelled on the poll.
