What Year Did everyone Buy their first VCR, and what kind was your first one? Also, if it has broken down since, when did it finally conk out permanently, and what was it's problem?

I guess my family were late bloomers-we waited until March 1986-it was a Fisher Hi-fi-Stereo Model, and it was the second best VCR we've ever had (the best was a 1979 Sony Betamax i bought second hand). It made the BEST tapes-they show no signs of wear even now, even though the tapes we made on it are easily the most watched\abused we have in our house. It finally conked out in August 1992, along with the video camera we bought the same day as the VCR (Sony Video 8). It's gears got warped, and couldnt rewind or fast forward-plus it started eating tapes. We sold it to a local electronics store for parts.

Man, I really don't remember, but it lasted about ten years. When I was getting ready to buy my latest one I did some research and all the experts agree that if the VCR's you buy today break down you might as well through them away, but those old ones are worth repairing.

I wonder if the tape thing has more to do with the quality of the tapes you bought in those days. I'm no expert, but it seems like that would have more to do with it.

Welcome to the boards!

I didn't buy my first VCR til 1996 or 97. Hows that for a late bloomer? It was a Samsung. I still have it, actually, but use it very rarely unless I want to tape something when I am not home.
