I've been writing fanfiction for a total of about three years. When I started, my fics were crap, but then slowly got better. Two years ago I started taking Drama classes in school to become more outspoken. It was about a year before I realized that my writing had been improved dramatically since I began the lessons.
Personally, I think that acting and writing are similar and pretty much go hand in hand. If you can become someone totally different, then you can leave yourself behind and honestly ask yourself what a certain character would do in select situations. If you are creative enough to write a story out of nothing, then you can make up the next part of a scene in your improv.
