Does anyone think the name Xena will stick for the new planet?

There's a new planet? Wow, if there is, and I never knew about it, I am SERIOUSLY more out of the loop then I thought. :p

Hopefully this planet-reclassifying thing is just a fad. Considering how stubbornly fickle us human beings are in this day and age, we'll be back to nine in no time.

There's a new planet? Wow, if there is, and I never knew about it, I am SERIOUSLY more out of the loop then I thought. This is news to me, too, and I've even been reading the Pluto thread (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=172446)! Where was this announced?

EDIT: Found this page (http://www.telescopes.com/new-planet/index.php) with details and specs of 2003 UB313. I say we just name it Planet X. Get it? Planet 10? Roman numerals? Original name for Pluto? Come on!

I hope not. It's tacky, goes aginst planetary naming coventions, and there is nothing worse thaat a shallow pop culture reference.

I'm sorry, but I have to assume there's something else behind this name choice. I can't imagine that a bunch of (probably) middle-aged or higher scientists are going to even remember Xena: Warrior Princess...much less name a planet after her.

Then again, in this world we live in you never know what kind of crazy nonsense is going to arise. Maybe we should name a planet after Samuel L. Jackson's character in Snakes on a Plane.... :p

No, its named after her. I think the guy who discovered it named it, though its unofficial for now.

There was an article on it in the Boston Globe a couple of days ago.

Yeah if anything, if they choose to name a planet after an Amazonian-esque character they should just have chosen the name She-Ra, since that would work with the order of the planets initials phrase.

My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Neat Planets...Sucka!

The "S" named planet works, because the "X" name is far too nitche and can only be applied to nonsense and fantiful words like Xenophobe, Xenogears, Xenomorph, Xyalaphone, and XXX

Allthough Planet X isn't really all that fitting either, X being used in space entities usually suggests weird/forbodding/evil space things. It would also crush the dreams of many when man walks on Planet X and just find out it's a rather boring and uneventful place, lacking danger, evil, or even disaster that threatens the entire universe itself. Planet X must be reserved for something far greater than this.

Honestly I'm sure there's some GrecoRoman God or Goddess that hasn't been used to name a planet or a moon already and also would be rather fitting for this new planet.

But truthfully I would have named it Bob

There is no Xena in Greek or Roman myth. And you forget, alot of those scienist are probably fans of the show. Alot scienists are trekies, so i wouldn't be surprised if the discovers are Xena fans.

They're really naming it after the show? Bizarre! If it were me I'd name it Jamba Juice because it's a million time more awesome! But what do I know about names? I always make up some really crazy names.

By the way Artimus, you mispelled xylophone!

No, the nickname for UB 3000 (or whatever it is) is Xena, but it 'ws not offically recongized by the IAU.

Does that mean the new planet would make battle cries and do their own stunts?

Those are some nice senseless assumptions there. Of course, I guess they aren't any worse than my assumption that most scientists are middle-aged or older. Besides, I could understand astronomers being fans of Star Trek before I could understand them being fans of Xena.

Fine though. It's named after her. I can't say that I care all THAT much since it'll probably be a long time before these new planets become common knowledge (if they ever do). Sure, quite a few people read about them recently on the internet and such, but how many will make the effort to commit this new knowledge to memory....

Those are some nice senseless assumptions there. His assumptions aren't that senseless. It's entirely plausible that "a lot" of scientists are trekkies... though one might run into trouble trying to quantify "a lot". I'm sure there's enough.

Of course, I guess they aren't any worse than my assumption that most scientists are middle-aged or older. If most scientists were middle-aged or older, what do they all do for all those years after grad-school...?

Besides, I could understand astronomers being fans of Star Trek before I could understand them being fans of Xena. That's probably closer to what I'd call a senseless assumption... :p

The name sucks. Whatever idiot came up with the name deserves Life without Parole.

Now if they would call it Planet Char...

By the time you finish grad-school you're practically old enough to be considered middle aged.:p

By the time you finish grad-school you're practically old enough to be considered middle aged.:pGranted, plenty of people don't finish grad school until much later in life, but there's no shortage of future scientists finishing in their mid to late 20's. Even if it takes them longer, they ought to be in on a fair amount of their own research.

Actually, we've wasted most the Roman, Greek, and Norse gods on naming asteroids. (I would like to point out that Diana, Fortuna, and Janus have not yet been used and that Vulcan is sadly saved for something between the sun and Mercury) Beyond that Trans-Neptupian objects are supposed to be named after underworld or death deities. Big hopes for Enma to win out on this paticular category, considering Pluto, Hades, Anubis, and Hel are uneligable, and I'm not fully sure if Odin or Freya count.

However, my personal opinion on what we should name 2003 UB313 if not Xena... I suggest that we name the new planet Son Goku after the Japanese version of the Monkey Emperor.
