Since the issue of a re-edit of Outlaw Star has come up with the recent great news about the Saturday night block, I thought this would be a good time to clear this subject up.
Ever since Outlaw Star showed up on the block exactly one year ago yesterday, there's been all this talk of the 'holy grail' episode, "Hot Springs Planet Tenrai". All I and I'm sure all of you heard for months on end is how this episode is nothing but an excuse to get the characters naked, and how its content was so ridiculous that it could never get aired on TV.
Well, those of you like me who eventually got OS uncut have probably realized the same thing as me. Its hype, nothing more. The episode is tame, extremely tame compared to the hype.
The entire episode an excuse to get naked? Wrong. It explains quite a lot about the casters, which will help explain the events surrounding Gene's caster in the series make much more sense. It also features one of the Anten Seven going after Gene. Its not a useless episode, by any means.
And the content? Its nothing compared to what the hype says. Most of the episode is just like the rest of the series. While its implied that the women are naked, you don't see anything, just like how while you know Melfina's naked while navigating the Outlaw Star, you don't see anything. In the end, you see Aisha's boobs for about 3 seconds, and you get to see the butt of Suzuka, Urt(one of the caster wizards) and a Sylgreen for maybe 20 seconds in total. Thats it. Yes, there's the 'dirty' video, but its not all that dirty. You see her butt for 2 seconds. Outside of that its just like it usually is with Melfina, you don't see anything.
Is it the most 'offensive' episode of Outlaw Star? Thats probably true. But the show's content is NOTHING compared to the hype. If the episode's content is given the same treatment as CB got on this new block, don't only expect the episode to air, but expect only 30 or so seconds of edited footage at the most.

Is that ALL that's in that episode? If that's so, then Toonami could've digitally painted that episode. I find that episode to be somewhat important to Outlaw Star as it explains the Caster Gun. This in turn helps build up the importance of the Caster gun in the end of the series. Now if the episode was like the episode "Demon of the Water Planet" (totally useless to the plot overall), then I wouldn't of cared about it. But, again, I feel that episode is important.
But this is just my opinion...
Yea, I've downloaded that one episode just to see what it had. And he's right, it's rather tame. Slap some digital bikinis on the girls in the springs, cut the Aisha & Gene breast shot, and digital bikini the dirty video (call it a 'swimsuit' video :wakko: )... voila! Easily placed on Toonami, much less AS.
Most of the episode everyone's already in swimsuits (that's a law of the planet... everyone can only dress in swimsuits), so it's a matter of making the digital bikinis look like those. That might be the tricky bit.

That episode is friggin hilarious!
The problem, though, is that most of the people ARE already wearing swimsuits. Since these swimsuits are drawn much better than the digital swimsuits, the digital ones would look really stupid next to the real ones. Plus, there isn't a whole lot CN can do to hide the, uhhh "more animated" cleavage.

Yeah, the animators at OS had a lot of that silicon based ink.

I've got the DVD, and "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" is one of the funniest episodes of any Anime I've ever seen. It dosen't really need the semi-nude scenes to be funny, but it would still be nice if CN didn't edit them when, and if, they show it on the new Saturday night block

Since the first episode airs Monday, I was wondering, should I watch Outlaw Star? How long is it?
VinceA

Depends on what you like to watch normally. It's a pretty good action adventure with a bit of levity.
It's 25 episodes long on Toonami (there are 26 episodes but one was not shown on Toonami due to issues CN has with it)

Outlaw Star is like Cowboy Bebop on sugar pills.

Watch the first three or four episodes, then the last three or four episodes. There are better things to do than to waste your time with those in between.
Meh. I dunno what's wrong with you guys. ;)
Outlaw Star is an excellent show. Sure Cowboy Bebop was better... it's kinda hard to compare The Beatles to Beethoven, except to say that both are good music. Same thing with OS/CB. Outlaw Star is a good action series, not as exquisitely made as Cowboy Bebop, but it's good action sci-fi show.

Its a pretty good show except for a few things
1)The version on TV has some of the most ridiculous edits you'll ever see. Changing poker to go fish, editing out the word kill, die, lady, gun, etc...
2)The ending is horrible. It ruins the best aspect of the heroes, their believability, and turns them into the typical cliche crap. And thats not even mentioning the Anten Seven or the Galactic Leyline...
You'll enjoy the first 22 episodes immensely (especially the uncut version if you can ever get it). Don't get excited for the last 3.

It's a good, fun action adventure series. Heck, I liked it enought to get it all on DVD. :)
Definately worth taking the time to watch when it comes on, even if the edit job, while not interfering with the plot line much, is pretty strange at times.

If you like science fiction mixed with a dash of mysticalness (is this even a word?) and a hint of western type themes, then Outlaw Star is your show. The edits on Outlaw Star aren't that bad. They only edit language, nudity, and blood. Some edits are really pointless, but aren't really noticeable (except for not showing one episode, but you could live without seeing that episode).
Here is one noteworthy edit:
*Jim looks at his rather clean hand*
Jim: "What the hell is this?"
(He's refering to the blood that got edited out, so there's nothing there but his clean hand)
This edit was rather funny

Outlaw Star is still good even with the edits but it does make gene look soft.....Never mind just buy it on DVD.

There's more to the reason of why they didn't show it, and never will show it, than just the nudity. Several of the characters in the episodes are straight up perverts as well as quite a few clevage shots. To a degree, censors in America are more frightened by the "implied" than what's stated. It doesn't take them showing a woman's nude body to convey the same point that one would create, and its because of that fact that CN simply can't air it. It's obvious to anybody that Tenrei provides certain "services" to its clientel, and in a nation where you can get arrested for standing on a street corner and offering your "services", this is simply too taboo.

>>Several of the characters in the episodes are straight up perverts
Yet Gene was never exactly portrayed as this perfect man, even in the chopped up Toonami version :P Perverts is nothing that someone over the age of 12 can't handle.
>>as well as quite a few clevage shots.
Which we got from Faye in almost every episode of CB
Its obviously not Toonami material, but when you show characters getting high on mushrooms, the red eye stuff, people shot in the head, etc... it hardly seems difficult for something as tame as this episode to be labelled as this ultra offensive and risque thing. Not showing Eva because there's a scene where you see dozens of naked Rei clones that you can't edit out without ruining the story makes sense. Not showing KtMI because removing the nude scenes would result in taking a lot of the 'effect' of the show out makes sense. What doesn't make sense is totally removing an entire episode because it has 2 minutes worth of footage that CAN be toned down without ruining things.

The thing is this, you're making some very broad statements. Censorships dont work on broad statements, and some things are acceptable while others are not. Getting high on mushrooms and violence are two separate issues in the eyes of the censors than straight up sexual content. Cowboy Bebop wasn't shown totally uncut as well, there were some mild changes here and there. Faye in a somewhat skimpy yellow top with a doll body is entirely different than bands of cloth wrapped tightly around the breasts of a bunch of women with more detailed "anatomy". Sorry if I sound graphic on this next part, but for the sake of this discussion I'm just going to say it. Faye doesn't have.... nipples. You do not see them openly or underneath clothing in Cowboy Bebop, at least not on the CN version. The women in Outlaw Star however DO have them, particularly you can see their effect underneath the swimsuits in the hotsprings episodes. I'm sorry if this seems overly detailed, but it is a point worth noting as it can make the difference between what gets edited and what doesn't. Lastly, this discussion isn't really worth having any more, at least not for me for one big reason. I've talked with and watched the work of the Toonami/Adult Swim people for so long that I've grown to trust their judgement in these issues. They're in the actual industry and can make amazingly more informed decisions than any of us. If they say it can't be on there, then I believe them, simple as that.

Well everyone, Outlaw Star is on for its 10th run in one year. If you haven't seen it by now, (as Gene would say...), you better get ready!!!
Random Outlaw Star quotes
Gene- Who would want to eat such crappy ice cream? (He actually said crappy on Toonami)
Jim- GENE!!! (He says this in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE)
Melfina- Um..... 'kay (She seems so cute and innocent when she says this)
Aisha- Grrrr, Who are you calling an ANIMAL?!!! (Well you are a cat like beast aren't you?)
Suzuka- No one has seen more than 3 of my secret techniques. (Well I've seen most of them, and not only am I still alive to see them, I think they are cheap)
Gilliam- I am worried about my future prospects. (I now, with Gene's landing techniques, who wouldn't be)
Narrator- There are clear differences between living and non-living entities (This is the most pointless thing ever said! Everytime I hear this, I go DUH!!! If your'e living then your'e certainly not "non-living", so of course there are gonna be differences between them. People can be so stupid now in days)

Ironically enough, Toonami doesn't consider "crap" a swear word.

Also, ironically enough, they DON'T consider Hell a swear word on seldom occaisons. Especially when Jim stares at his edited-bloodless hand, and says "What the Hell?". Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that Williams' Street misses something once in a while? I can think of two more occaisons where this has happened, too.

All right then, let's get it off the air already. There's better, rarer shows in Toonami's arsenal that could fill a half hour.
(Of course, I don't think that they should have even aired OS the first time, but anyway...)

i got into a conversation last night w/ someone about anime, and he said cn edited outlaw star really bad. ive seen the whole series on cn, and i didnt think it looked too chopped up and it seemed they retained some adult content (they said hell alot, fred lo, etc).
he claimed that they choped up the dialogue really badly, edited out swears (which is obvious, but i wouldnt think os would have too harsh of language), edited out the blood (which was obvious in alot of places).
then he said that they took the last 2 eps and merged them into one. that is when i started to doubt what he was saying, because i think that too harsh a thing for cn to do.
surely i would have heard about such a hideous act either on these boards or on CNX when i first read about how they omitted one episode due to nudity. surely the dude at cnx would have mentioned such extreme editing. i mean, merging two episodes??? thats a cardcaptor/kidswb thing, not toonami/cn thing!! i refuse to believe it untill i get conformation from you posters, cause i know alot of you have your facts straight, which i dont think this guy did. anyone know for sure.....
I.R Joey
02-03-2002, 02:38 PM
Yeah there where some edits in there. Obviously the harsher language was adjusted, but that wasn't really important. Uhhh There was some blood removed...and such things as that.
But the major ones where these.
Melfina was orignially naked when she was in the tank guiding the ship around, in the CN version she has a digitally added bathing suit.
Toonami didn't merge any episodes but they did skip on, ep 24, which had the team on a hot springs planet...draw your own conclusions ;). I mean cute as Aisha is you can't have her naked right?
Gene was somewhat more Womanizing in the original, it's still implied in the CN version, but I've heard they toned down his charecter.
I hope that helps.

LOL wow someone has to much time on their hands, however I do think that they messed up in a few areas. To CN's credit they did leave some of those things mentioned in. Like Melfina being attacked by Harry.

I heard that, in the original, Fred Luo was much more...how can I put this without getting edited...friendlier toward the menfolk, particularly Gene. CN toned him down.

30+ edits was the case most of the time. The most common edits were language, changing S**t to oh man, bastard to loser, damn to darn, kill to destroy, etc... All the blood was wiped off because real people don't bleed. All the covered up nudity had digital clothing put on because nudity doesn't exist in this country. Poker was changed to Go Fish because gambling doesn't exist here. The Hot Springs episode was axed because it had 1 minute of offensive footage. And so on... worse edited (# wise, not time wise) than DBZ and Escaflowne.
why did they cut the part were Hilda self destructs?
Sheamon
02-05-2002, 11:14 PM
The same reason they cut everything else. Because suicide doesn't exist in america.
ok this might be a stupid question:
Are those cuts made from the US version (DUB)?
I mean...wait...this is a lame question heh... :D
my first thought when I read those edits were that they were taken from the jap version and that they just translated it differently - like the jap equivalent for "hell" to us "heck", ya know?
...this edit list reminds me of how much I really love anime!! YAY - and BOO for cuts!!

The DVD IS uncut, and those edits were made from the uncut dub. The edited version is not available for sale to my knowledge.
I have them. They're probably the best deal DVD wise, 9 episodes on 2 DVDs for $45, but you can probably find it for $30-35 pretty easily.

Despite the fact that the episode is quite tame (well atleast compared to the hype surrounding it) and it does fully explain the casters, it won't be airing.
Too bad, there's only about 15-20 seconds of actual nudity, and the cleavage/womanizing is nothing that didn't get past scot free on Bebop :(

It's almost laughable that they would spend all that money and time on digital bathing suits for tenchi, yet they wont do it for a few scenes in outlaw star. If they were so uptite they could have cut the scenes, but they didn't even do that.
JohnCrichton
03-11-2002, 12:03 PM
Indeed.
Only nudity I remember in the episode was Aisha and that was only for a split second.
The episode itself is actually really good and funny. At least in Japanese.
OS is better subtitled. Gene sounds more cocky manic and Susuka is actually suppose to be really funny as well as a silent killer. In English you only really get to see the silent samurai side of her.
In Japanese, she has these simple lines that just make you laugh outloud. :D
VinceA
03-11-2002, 07:46 PM
There wasn't much nudity but there was the whole dirty movie side story with Urt (sp?). I don't think it would fly well on CN. I think CN just didn't want to sit and figure out how they were going to explain it away (although the "Tea Squad" would probably have a blast redubbing it to make it seem innocent).
