"... Okay, I think I'm starting to get it." :)

So, Tenchi Universe has returned to Toonami. What do you guys think? This is my first time watching all the Tenchi Muyo!/Tenchi Universe episodes straight through (I'd only seen bits and pieces before).

Which origins do you guys prefer? I kinda enjoyed having Ryoko trapped in the cave during TM, it seemed to add to her personality when it came to her feelings for Tenchi. Simply crashing on Earth isn't quite the same.

The two Tenchi TV series can't really compare to the OVA. Universe is alright in the story episodes, but it has tons of filler that is rather dull. It doesn't get really good until the last half a dozen episodes. And TIT, well thats pretty much garbage -_-

So yes, I prefer the OVA's origins :P

The Tenchi Muyo! OVA line is usually considered all-around to be the best of all the Tenchi shows.

I prefer Tenchi Universe and Tenchi In Tokyo over the OVA actually. I'm just different I guess.

I prefer Universe, Muyo needed more filler. It went from Kagato to Clay to Jurai, Universe seemed to have One direct mission or plot.

Which origins do you guys prefer?...

I like the original OAV series origin for the characters, when the Tokyo origin coming in a close second. Both of these give much more valid reasons for Ryoko to fall in love with Tenchi. While overall as a series I'd say its a tie between Muyo and Universe. Not that Tokyo is bad, but it really doesn't get going until episode 16 with only "How we met ", "Tenchi Anniversary " and "Ryoko's Big Date " being only the worthwhile episodes in the first half of the series...

I prefer the OVA origins better than the Universe beginning. The OVA's Ryoko falling in love with Tenchi is much more feasible than just crashing on Earth and immediately falling in love with Tenchi. Ayeka was no better either. She goes to Earth and spends about 10 minutes with Tenchi before falling in love with him. Plus, the whole love thing seemed rushed too.

*sighs* Where's Kiyone where you need her? She'll teach them a lesson in NOT falling in love with Tenchi. She is THE only female on the show not to fall in love with Tenchi...

...and that's because she loves me, DARK SPIDER!!! (I need a life)

I'm going to cast my vote with what seems to be the majority here: I like the OVA better. For a shorter series it gives more depth to Ryoko's affection for Tenchi. It gives another facet to the usually unredeemable (but somehow loveable) character.

I like the OAV and Universe. I do like the origins better in the OAV like most of you. In Universe, I actually kind of liked seeing Azaka and Kamidake in human form. :D

And about Tenchi in Tokyo, no offense to anyone who likes it, but it was pretty much crap. I really didn't care for Sakuya and the animation wasn't good at all.

I prefer Muyo's origins. Universe is actually my least favorite, the one main thing that keeps me watching it being Kiyone. Surprisingly, I liked the In Tokyo story. I don't know, maybe it's because it was the first Tenchi series I saw, but I just liked it a lot.

:D :D

Well, in this case I can see why you like Tokyo better. It seems that people tend to like the one that they saw first. I saw Muyo first, so I like it better. But the other two have their good points.

Well Zimed, in the case of the OAV series those 13 (14 if you count the Mihoshi special) episodes were put out very slowly over the course of two years, so it seems to goes by too fast because CN airs it all in less than three weeks...

I prefer Universe only for its actual completion and successful attempts at humor. If anything that bugged me, it was the lack of backstory for Jurai and no more Tsunami, Tokimi, or goddess Washu. Since Universe also has two movies backing its story line, the completion is all there. I'd need to see Muyo! finished before I can pass further judgement on that one. As for Tokyo, the first 7 or so episodes were actually funnier than Universe but the whole world of Tokyo seemed so limited. No Jurai backstory at all, Washu is a scientist for hire in a lab that s rather dinky, and Ryo-ohki now belongs to Sasami

I prefer the OVA series. I will admit that I've only seen the Toonami version, but one of these days I'll shell out the cash. As for the other series, they're OK, I just like the OVA better.

I like the OVA series best out of the 3 current series. I remember seeing the first Tenchi movie (TMiL) many years ago on the Sci-fi channel. Then a few year later, I heard from a Toonami interview that they got the 3 Tenchi series. Never seeing the series before, I knew that they had to be as good as the movie. CN's edited version was no disappointment to me.

The OVA is better in my opinion. Everything just seems more interesting in there than in Universe.

I liked the OVA and Tenchi Universe about the same.

The OVA has a better reason for Ryoko's love for Tenchi, but Universe had a better(well, kinda)storyline, and I liked the movies w/ it.

Also to note that the OVA storyline isn't even finished yet. We have OVAIII and GXP to tack on to that starting this Spring on the Nippon TV Network. Now we must pray to the anime-gods at Pioneer for a swift acquistion and domestic release. ;)

I liked universe the best, muyo wasn't really long enough for me to get into but I liked it a LOT more than I liked tokyo. I don't really like that one at all. The demons that kept popping up were just so...stupid. I also didn't like the plot of that series in general.

Oh, and:

I really haven't heard too much about the 2nd OAV and I was wondering on here if anyone could tell me some about it or give me some links. Also, I haven't been able to find much news on the 3rd OAV. But I did hear Tenchi was supposed to pick one of the girls. Is this true or just a rumor? Thanks guys!

OK, first off, the 2nd Tenchi Muyo OAV was episodes 8 through 13 (Hello Baby to Here comes Jurai), and yes, in the third OAV Tenchi will make his choice. Actually, according to that interview I read, Tenchi already made his choice, he's just been holding out on us (and the girls) :(

OAV 1 & 2 are the episodes that just aired on Cartoon Network. Dunno about your second question, but I would assume so.

I already know there will be a swift release: I hear that compared to other companies like ADV, Pioneer just goes in, dubs it and releases it in a short amount of time.

As for my favorite series, it is sort of a toss up between Muyo and Universe. Each one I admire does have great aspects that I like:

OAV (Muyo)
-The whole power that is with Tenchi the whole time. I mean, the Master Key and the Lighthawk Wings are just plain cool, and they are all his.
-The three gods showing up (Tsunami, Washu and Tokimi)
-Kagato: he is meanacing and just plain awesome here in design and character. I admire the "Destroyer of Artifacts" over the betrayer of Yosho which he is in Universe
-Some of the aspects of time for love to blossom, especially between Ryoko and Tenchi. (yes, Ayeka too, but I refuse to talk of that)

Universe
-Ryoko and Ryo-Ohki are their own beings, not just some creation of mass made by Washu. I especially like here how Ryoko is just a space pirate of no origin and that the cabbits are an actual race instead of a Washu thing.
-Speaking of relations, they do not seem to be as complex and confusing as they are in the OAV. Sure it leads to interesting circumstances, but it just drives me crazy.
-Kiyone: She is a great character who seems to be the essence of Mihoshi's "capable" side from the OAV. Besides, it just makes Mihoshi more ditzy!
-Nahgi: considering how imfamous Ryoko is, you would think there are more people out there after her. And Nahgi truely delivers in all of her appearances in the TV series. (including that scene at the swimsuit contest) Besides, she has Ken-Ohki, and too many cabbits is not a bad thing.

So basically, I am right now taping the Toonami cut of TU, and maybe someday I will get a new copy of the OAV series. (partially since all I have are the original version of 1-6) As for Tenchi In Tokyo, except for a couple of things I liked (the Yuugi/Sasami relationship, Hotsuma and his fling with Ryoko), I could do without it.

Thanks guys! I understand now. No one had ever told me that those were separate OAVs...lol Well, now I know. :) Thanks again.
