I'm fairly new to these boards, and figured this was the best forum to post this news. I recieved it in the TV Guide News and Gossip newsletter.
CAT FANCY: Well, it's about time: 20th Century Fox is bringing America's favorite cat, Garfield, to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film — which will mix live action with computer animation — will revolve around the sibling rivalry between Garfield and his canine sidekick, Odie. (Speaking of Odie, isn't he just the cutest thing ever?) Toy Story scribes Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow are penning the script, so chances are it'll be really good.

HIYA Clark! Hey, anyone ever told you you kinda look like Superman? :p :p :p
As for the rumor.....
Please say you're kidding. One thing that concerns me is that the cartoon Garfield was voiced by Lorenzo Music (God bless his soul), and the mere idea of anyone else voicing him is a bit hard to grasp.
That, and....*ahem* Let me get into character for this 'rant'...
*STOMP STOMP STOMP* *ROOOOARRRRRRRRRR!!!*
Megaseadramon head= Have they learned NOTHING from the Sucky and Bullpatties Live Action/Animated bomb?!
Skullgreymon head= Not to mention the upcoming Scooby movie-I swear, if that movie gets nominated for an Oscar, I'm slammin' my bony face against a nice, thick wall. Repeatedly.
Main head=...No doubt about it-nothing in the world is sacred anymore.
*coughs* There, I'm done.

Now, if we could just take Scooby and Garfield, pump them up with a little synthetic adrenaline (using a CGI syringe, natch), and lock them in a laptop together...
We would never have to look at those two overused, overmerchandised and overexposed monsters ever again!
And THAT would be a good thing! :)

Heres what i could find online to validate it more.
Garfield to be featured feline in live-action pic
Jan. 17, 2002
America's favorite rotund cat Garfield, his dull-witted canine cohort Odie and their perpetually single owner Jon Arbuckle are making their way to the big screen as a live-action/CGI feature. 20th Century Fox has optioned feature rights to "Garfield," the long-running comic strip that John Davis will produce through his Davis Entertainment. "Toy Story" scribes Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow will write the script, which will focus on the sibling rivalry between Garfield and Odie. The feature will be live action, with a computer-generated Garfield. "Garfield," created by Jim Davis (no relation to John Davis), was first published in 1978. Over the years, the 27-pound orange- and black-striped cat became known for his laziness, wry remarks and love of lasagna.(Zorianna Kit)

I'm not sure what to think about all this. On the one hand, being an avid Garfield lover, I'm ecstatic that their finally making a movie of him. I just don't think I could handle anyone but Lorenzo Music doing Garfield's voice. I'm also not sure what to think about Garfield being a computer generated character. No matter how it turns out, I'm sure I'll go see it!

Maybe-it-is-true-but-I-think-Garfield-should-stay-in-regular-animation.It-also-seems-that-Garfield-won't-talk.

Did I miss the section where it says Lorenzo Music is voicing Garfield? The death of a beloved voice actor is not the end-all of a character (Although sometimes it should be!).

I can't concieve of another "Garfield" project moving forward without Lorenzo Music in the title role. I'm sure that anyone who has seen the Saturday morning cartoon, the TV specials, and in turn, read the comic strip, would agree with me. It'd be nice to see what will happen, but that is some hurdle they must overcome.
Also, leave the "Rocky & Bullwinkle" movie alone. I feel that people didn't even attempt to give it a chance.

Rocky and Bullwinkle would have been great without that Blonde. She had no purpose other than "obligatory female as main good guy".If they had to do that, they could have at least found someone less obnoxious.
The first half hour of that movie is some of the funniest stuff i`ve seen and makes such a great mockery of itself. "Meanwhile,at the other end of the drawing..."

Y'know, when I read Garfield my head hears Lorenzo Music doing Garfield's lines. I don't want to disturb that, so I'm kind of mixed on the movie.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Jim Davis isn't writing this movie, as he barely writes his own comic strip anymore. YOU HEARD ME.
In regard to this pitch, whether it's for real or just a rumor, I think it's a terrible terrible idea. Here's why:
1. Garfield lives in a universe full of slapstick and bizarre animation. This could be hilariously translated into an ENTIRELY CGI movie, but not a live action/CGI mix. The characters would be destroyed. Anyone remember The Flintstones? Well, this would be worse.
2. Lorenzo Music WAS Garfield. So unless they plan to compose Garfield's dialogue entirely out of archived Lorenzo Music recordings, I don't think they should do it at all. It would be too sad to hear someone else voicing Garfield and to not give him any dialogue would be even worse.
3. Instead of this crap, they should be working on a new CGI Tom & Jerry movie, this time actually BASED on the old cartoons (as in no talking, lots of violence :D).

Sibling rivalry between Garfield and Odie... Hmm, does the premise sound familiar to anyone else? What was that movie called? Cats vs Dogs?

i dont like the sounds of this, even though at first i was real excited (when i first read the post). live action mixed w/ cgi....um, does anyone else fell like this is horrible idea, especially since its garfield, odie, and the other animals that will be the cg characters.
also, i was a huge fan of the old cartoon and the cartoon specials. they should just do the movie in traditional animation, why mess with what works??
and the fact that garfields voice has pasted, i dont know how i feel about a new one, although i suppose its one of those things that cant be avoided.
Does anyone know if Jim Davis has any involvement creatively with the movie? i sure hope he does, cause hes what makes garfield and co great. peace.

So, yet another cartoon rendered into live-action/CGI for no apparent reason. Sigh. I would really despise the idea, if it weren't for the fact that the Toy Story scribes are involved. Now, if anyone could take a horrible idea and make it sing, they could. So I'll give it a chance. Still, I'm not expecting much...

I'm not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, I've always liked Garfield, read the comic strips, watched the Saturday morning cartoon, etc... I've even jokingly thought about putting together a Garfield movie using some cast members of Whose Line is it Anyway? ("Starring Ryan Stiles as Jon Arbuckle, Mike McShane as Garfield, and Tony Slattery as Odie!")
(Don't worry. I'm full aware that's a horrible idea. :o And trust me, after this post, it will never see the light of day.)
I might go see this movie if and when it comes out, but my expectations aren't high. :(

Garfield - I must confess, while I'm open to new ideas - I will miss Lorenzo's voice work. But them we survive. People took on Mel Blanc's role, Henson's son took on Kermit. We must progress. If the scripts good then I watch it. If not.... grrr. I'll show 'em.... :)

How come you say this Terminatah? I read the comic strips everyday so I don't know what really goes on behind the scenes. Does he barely right his own stories anymore?

He has a small staff of people who help him not only to write the strip, but also to draw it. It's a well-oiled machine over at PAWS, INC. in Indiana. Most cartoonists write and draw the strip themselves. But that's not to say that Garfield still doesn't have his moments. He's just not as intellectual as he once was.
My favorite strips no longer in production:
-Calvin & Hobbes, by Bill Watterson
-The Far Side, by Gary Larson
My favorite strips still in production:
-FoxTrot, by Bill Amend
-Bizarro, by Dan Piraro <- a VERY underappreciated work!!

Good lord, the effort Cartoon Man, the effort :D
As for Lorenzo - I really think you guys should let someone else have a chance - Lorenzo was great - I loved his work in both Garfield and The Real Ghostbusters but sometimes you have to move with the times and try for a different experience!
Look at Keaton for instance, if we hadn't had a change in Batman how would we have sampled the delights and powerful performance of Val Kilmer or the simmering might that is George Clooney? I rest my case (otherwise known as shooting myself in the foot..)

I love Garfield! Have for years... I'm just feeling kinda mixed about the whole "movie" thing. Another TV special, sure, but a movie? I just don't know what to think... and now that I've heard that Lorenzo died from this thread...
I'll check it out when it comes out, though, definitely.
