Anyone catch this episode (which was finally a new ep). I thought it was pretty good. It really seemed to show how vulnerable humans really are out in deep space.
Any thoughts on this ep for those who were able to catch it?

I thought that the aliens were really creepy--they were almost like "grays." I especially liked how they never talked or directly communicated with Enterprise.

They were pretty creepy. Their heads looked similar to Species 8472 from Voyager. Ancient relatives maybe? They were definitely a mystery. Wonder if we'll see more of them in future episodes?

I thought the episode was pretty good too.

My major problem with the show right now is their
lack of shields.

Im actually hoping they acquire shields soon ..
Its seems inconsistent that they can measure the
shield strength of their enemies .. (they noted that
the aliens shields were down 30% when the fired the
phase cannons ) but they dont have shields of their own?

Its also troublesome that everyone has shields except them..
the klingons and the vulcans & andorians all had shields.

It just seems like with out shields the enterprise shouldnt
even be able to go into warp.

Also the technology to travel faster than the speed of light
or to descramble matter and reconstruct it on other worlds (i.e. transporters ) is far more complex than shields.

It would be like in our time period or jet fighters bieng able to travel at Moch 5 but having bows and arrows attached to the wings as weapons cause we havent figured out how to build rockets.

I agreew ith you on the shields arguement Spirit. Their lack of shields is a bit puzzling, considering the other technologies they have developed. Polarizing the hull doesn't seem to be cutting it. Now ,with their new phase cannons, they actually have a bit of punch in their arsenal. The pitiful torpedoes they used were drastically underpowered when used against the suprisingly strong foes they've encountered. It's a wonder the ship has even made it as far as it has.
Maybe the shields will be installed on Tuesday...
(sarcasm based on lines from Star Trek: Generations)

Well...accordong to early Trek Tech Manuals..shields were an outgrowth of transporter technology....

So vulnerable that they get stuff done when they've got limited resources and no one else but themselves on that tiny ship before a space station could get it done. True it was better than all the other episodes, but it still had a few continuity errors and such. Although I liked how they kept T'Pol out of a lot of the episode. :) The worst part of the whole episode was there wasn't enough Porthos. :(

I know this may be blasphemy ... but
to hell with the trek manuals - to
quote a vulcan "it is not logical".

Isnt it pretty obvious that the technology
behind transporter beams is centuries ahead of
"shields" or " phaser cannons"?

Again it would be like centurions during the
roman empire fighting wars with swords and
shields .. but using cell phones to call headquarters
for commands.

I like how they haven't resorted to killing an unnamed extra in every episode like TOS. For a moment last night, I thought those two that got "examined" by the aliens would be the first casualties on Enterprise. This makes things better, for when someone does finally die in a mission or during an onboard explosion, it'll be more dramatic. On the original series, and even the following three, whenever someone died from an exploding console it was like "oh...Ensign Doesn't-need-a-name" is dead. As long as he isn't apart of the main bridge crew I don't have time to deal with it."

And if shields are an outgrowth of transporters, I can accept why they don't have them yet. They don't like using the transporters, so they haven't had to get creative with them yet. It gives me a sense of rooting for the underdog. Look at the 1701-D. The only ships that could match their Enterprise was a Romulan warbird or a Borg cube. I just hope we get to see some fighting with the Romulans this time.

Well, unless they decided to throw continuity to the wind....the Enterprise crew won't be seeing any Romulans....might see thier ships, but not the romulans themselves....Kirk's crew was the 1st to actually see them....

They've already thrown continuity out the window just by them exisiting, right? :D

And what I meant by see Romulans fight, I meant the ships fighting, not the people. I can't recall a warbird every firing on the Enterprise in TNG. Episodes with Romulan ships in them were usually full of "who will make the first move" tension in the neutral zone, but nothing ever became of it.

I was thinking the same thing. When those two went down, I said, "They brought back the red-shirt!" >ahem< But that aside, I thought it was a kick ass episode. No humaniod make-up-artist's-dream alien here. Creepy as hell looking, and once you saw them, you understood why speech was foriegn to them. (No mouths. Yuck.) Plus, I loved it when Archer fired on one of them and the thing just turned and had this look on its face that said, "you're kidding, right?" Although, they really didn't HAVE faces, but still.

I'm not sure about the continuity errors and such, seeing as how I never really saw TOS. But I like that they don't have shields, and I like the fact that they have live ammunition. >shrugs< It's alot closer to home, where naval ships have to deal with crap as it comes. And, yes, the underdog rocks. :)
