This article came from Cinescape...

"After nine years, some of which were the most brilliant ever seen in the run of any drama on television, THE X-FILES will be calling it quits this may. In a report carried in the Hollywood Reporter, Chris Carter has decided to end the series this spring.

“I look at it as the ninth-inning situation," Carter told the Reporter. "I'd rather go out now and celebrate rather than have to make an announcement in the summer… I want to be able to wrap things up for the fans who have been there from the beginning and throughout. My determination was to go out with a series of very, very strong episodes that are going to pull a lot of threads together from the last nine years.”

Ratings have been falling for several years, and with original star David Duchovny having left the series at the end of last year, there was little left for fans of the old Mulder/Scully magic.

So long. We salute you, X-FILES. It’s been a great run."

Well, I'm glad this series is coming to an end. It's had a nice long run, granted the last couple of seasons have been bad. I just hope that if Carter wants to bring in Duchovny for the last episode, Fox will shell out whatever he wants. Mulder HAS to come back for the final episode. It will just be wrong if he's not there.

Yes, Mulder has to be back. The Lone Gunmen too, :).

Don't worry, they won't have any problems getting them in :P David Duchovney's the only problem, but since it will definately be the final episode, the odds of him showing up are atleast somewhat better. I just hope they go out great, god knows the show deserves a good ending.

I don't know if Ducovony will be back for the series finale (shame on him if he isn't) but I know that both he and Dana (dang, I forget her real name right now) are interested in doing a second movie.

I'm a very big X-files fan. I've been with the serie since the first episode and I'm very glad to see it end. This year has been very awful and I'm glad they decided ealy to call it quits. Now they can come up with a good final....I hope.

Part of me is sad to hear that this is TXF's last season. I've become a huge fan of Doggett and wouldn't mind seeing it go on with him and Reyes. Then part of me realizes that this is probably best for the show and it prolly should've ended a couple years back anyway. Hopefully they'll get Mulder back for the finale and hopefully they'll do a good job of patching up as many storylines as they can.

At least Carter is ending it now, while it's still good. It's a shame that many shows are dragged out until they become tedious, and I'm happy that The X-Files won't be one of them.

Don't take this personally, but The X-Files redefined tedium four years ago. You can only go to the mutant freak well so many times before it becomes old hat.
And yes, Joe "I am Marvel, hear me roar" Quesada, I'm looking at you.

I just don't hold out much hope for the series finale. Let's face it, closure just ain't gonna happen, especially for a show for which closure is a dirty word. The finale could be about The Second Coming, and it would still let fans down. Too bad. I just hope that Mr. Carter hasn't been stashing his residuals in Enron stock...

Okay... let me rephrase my earlier post:
I'm glad that The X-Files won't be getting worse than it is now.
It lost something when David Duchovny (sp) left, and while Robert Patrick is doing a good job in his place, he pales in comparison to Mulder, and how much he was to the show.

The way I see it, when Fox left the show, Dana took his role and Doggett became the new doubting Dana. Dogett may be a pretty cool character, but his role in the series was so shallow, in my estimation. Of course, I haven't watched this series since last year, so he may have really developed and I missed it.

I agree with the sentiment that this show should have ended a few years ago, but at least it's still a critical favorite and the fans that have stuck around are still singing it's praises, which really can't be said for Fox's other series that has over stayed its welcome. I give you three guesses on that one.

Three guesses, huh?
Family Guy
(ducks thrown rocks)
Grounded For Life
(avoids the tire iron)
The Tick
(the collective conciousness of the AniGen board strikes Evil Dr. Reef dead)

I'm just kidding! The Tick and Family Guy are two of the four shows on Fox that I still watch. But *sniff*, The Tick was cancelled! Why, God, why?!?!?!?!?

I would say the Simpsons, but it still has some good episodes now and then.

What a shame! I was a HUGE X files fan, tapes, books, the whole deal. I thought it was one of the greatest shows out there. Then at season, I dunno, 7 or so, I got too busy with other stuff and didn't see much else. And I stopped watching it a lot when David left, he was so cool! But the new agent is pretty cool. I really would like David to be in the finale, he's a major part in the show. But if they made a second movie, that would work too.

I became a stronger fan after the Movie - I watched it before - but on and off. The movie suduced me into the conspiracy and I have enjoyed ever since (even managed to obtain a few box sets!!) - I've missed much of the last series but from what I saw I really enjoyed Doggett - I think he'd have been perfect for a few more series...

But then after 9 series I think closure is fair enough. I think people have woefully disregarded Robert Patrick. I thought David was excellent but Robert was a brilliant choice. Shame it couldn't go further, but as the statement from the studio said, it's best end on a high note.

So be it.

It's been fun!

I stopped watching this show after the movie. Why? Because it was supposed to follow up on the Season 5 finale. It did nothing of the sort. Then Season 6 started like the movie never happened. I stopped watching, and I don't feel as if I've lost anything.

Incidentally, my roomie was watching an ep this season, and I gave it a look. I then lost my lunch. I could not stand it. They're putting this show out of it's misery.

BTW - how did they finally write Mulder out?

As far as I know, Mulder is still not been written out. Even if he's not in the series finale, there is a very real possiblity he will return for a second X Files movie.

I also started to watch the show more religiously after the movie. Up til then, the mythology of the show intimidated me. It had this long history I hadn't been involved in and the movie was a great jumping in place for me. Well, I did watch several episodes that lead up to the movie, but it was the movie that really got me hooked.
