View Full Version : The Official "Iron Man" Movie News & Discussion Thread (Possible Spoilers)
Hey,
www.superherohype.com has some announments regarding the film, so I figured now is a good time to get them all in one place. Regarding Tony's armour;
He shared his thoughts on the version of the Iron Man suit Tony Stark will bring to life. Initially, it will be the gray metal suit, since he builds it as a prisoner of war. The more modern red and yellow suit will appear in the film and Favreau aims to make it more of a RoboCop-type feel instead of a Power Ranger-style suit.
"The suit will be more like a weapons platform than a flying suit – more of a War Machine-feel to it," said Favreau.
He also revealed that the villain of the piece will indeed be The Mandarin.
Iron Man is currently set for a May 2nd, 2008 release. Casting has not yet begun.

Yes, John Favreau is directing it as well. No word who will star and I think he wants it to come out next year or early 08? I cant remember.
Well, then...let's hope for someone decent lead is all I can say. ;)

The director has a MySpace site for fans to ask questions. He responds fairly quickly, so it's a nice way of updating yourself on the film from the guy himself. He's been doing it for a while. Look in this thread for the transcripts:

Wow.
I'm an Iron Man fan, but even with the Tom Cruise rumours a few years ago (when I would have put my house on it), I didn't expect for them to actually do it
A slightly bigger, better quality image of the would-be armour.

Nevermind. He's perfect.

A bit ironic isn't it.
Anyway my only complain about Downey playing Tony is that he too short to be playing him.Kind of like Michael Keaton was for Batman. Other than that I think he will do a pretty good job.

Robert Downey Jr is a superb actor; I can't think of anything he's been in that I haven't enjoyed on some level. I'm glad to see they're continuing the newfound tradition of getting solid actors for superhero movies (Spider-Man, Batman Begins).

Hello,
I think Robert Downy Jr. is an excellent choice for Iron Man. He's an excellent actor, from the movies I've seen him in, and I'm sure he'll shine in his scenes as Tony Stark. Keep in mind, we'll probably be seeing A LOT more Tony Stark and a lot LESS Iron Man. While wearing the suit the actor disappears on screen, so I'm sure Downy and the director are going to want to give Tony Stark every emotionally poignant scene, leaving the scenes of him covered up and expressionless in the suit to a minimum. So we need a good actor to carry this role. And also, it's a man in a suit of armor, so you don't need a bodybuilder to play him (unlike Superman or Batman). So any complaints about Downy's physique is unnecessary. He looks fit and that's all you need. You dont need a muscle-bound freak. Part of the fun of being Iron Man is that if you put on the suit, you're immediately "Iron Man". You don't have to be a bodybuilder underneath the suit to qualify.

Well, this news ruins it for me!
That's what I said...back when Michael Keaton was cast as Batman. :p
Anyway my only complain about Downey playing Tony is that he too short to be playing him.
Well, just lift him with the boots. The suit could easily take care of Downey's physical lacking for the role, and more logically here than it did for Keaton's Batman.

You know, I'm surprised that the overall reaction to Downey has been so positive. I expected cries of outrage, and people declaring that the movie will bomb because of him. You know, like when people started projecting all of their reservations of the first Fantastic Four movie (Story, Alba, arrogant writers) onto the likes of Ioan Gruffudd ("omg too young!"), who was quite possibly the best cast person in the film.
BatKid
10-01-2006, 12:30 PM
Downey has been praised simply because he's a respected vet in the acting biz and it sounds like a decision that was made for the movie's integrity, rather than the cash.
With F4, Alba (ugh), Story (oy), and Ioan (alright) were all pretty much inexperienced. I think it showed with the final product. For me, by far Evans and Chiklis were the only ones to nail their characters.

With the possible exception of Tom Cruise playing the role, I don't see anyone else coming close to matching the look of Tony Stark.

Hmm. Seems like the original grey armor got lots of tweaks thrown in by the people who designed it for film (which was expected). But it's not changed too drastically and it does look like something thrown together from various spare parts in a makeshift lab. Overall, I like the way it turned out.
I think that's an awesome armour - you couldn't ask for a better looking suit for the original Jack Kirby suit. I was worried about the costume in this film, I remember years ago there was a horrible rumour that the armour would simply be a chest plate when Tom Cruise was attached to the project.
Can't wait to see the red and gold armour!

The red/gold suit is my favorite, so I hope it's not just relegated to the final battle of the movie since we'll see the entire evolution of the suit.

I've done no research on this movie at all, but I'm glad Downey's going to be Stark.
I'm also glad they've deviated from the rejected designs seen earlier in this thread. I never realized it, but you have to be careful when adapting the armor for movies, because it runs the risk of looking like standard sentai. Ok I think it's time warner Bros. & DC start to get into the game now . We all know that {BATMAN & SUPERMAN} are the core of Dc comics as is Wonder Woman , But I really believe it's time high time DC start's to showcase the other Superheroes they have in live action movies .
Marvel is running circles around DC when it comes to live action Superhero movies (The SPIDER-MAN movie trilogy franchise totally destroyed both of the Bats & Sups box offices records, not to mention the films have bosted spidey's popularity and the comic books issues are get sold faster & faster .) Marvel already announced after their planing an Avengers movie . after their done showcasing the origins of the main heroes of marvel .
Before DC does a JLA movie, I think they should do, (The Flash/Wally West) , (The Green Lantern / Hal Jordan) , (Wonder Woman/Diana Prince) , (Aquaman/Arthur Curt) etc ... Then a JLA movie .

While the Swank one doesn't excite me, the Samuel L. Jackson one sure does! And while they didn't say what role he is playing, we all know per those same rumors; one Ultimate Universe style Nick Fury!
Probably expect some sort of an announcment this weekend at Comic Con during the Iron Man panel.

that comic-con footage looks absolutely amazing IMO. looks like a very faithful adaptation. one of my friends said he wouldn't see it because of robert downey jr.... i couldnt disagree more now, after seeing that. downey's got the cock-eyed nature of Stark (very reminiscent of the Ultimates)... and the footage of Iron Man, + Sabbath playing in the background.... bonafide badass.
this, along with "The Dark Knight" is definitely getting me pumped for next year!:D

Seeing as they just finished filming, and are done revealing the cast, me thinks the rumors of him not being in the film are true. I heard the villain will be Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger, and Mandarin for the sequel.
I'm kinda glad, since Mandarin is becoming overused as an Iron Man villain, but a little worried as how will it work out.

I'm not that familiar with Iron Man origin in comics, but the movie clearly states that Tony Stark were a jerk pre-Iron Man, and his accident created heart condition and subsequent creation of Iron Man redeems him into a hero. It's a very interesting idea to develop that concept into the movie.

Despite the "Iron Man" song use being totally predictable... it still rocks. As does the rest of the trailer. As far as I'm concerned based on this trailer, Robert Downey Jr. is the best casting choice for a superhero lead since Christian Bale in Batman Begins. He owns the role, end of story. I absolutely love the "No gang signs" moment. Oh, and the various suits rock hard, though I believe one of them is Iron Monger, created by the villainous Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges!).

Man, Downey is quite the arrogont jerk in the trailer. Obviously, since he's supposed to be, that's not a criticism. I like it, and I'm surprised that they finished as many visual effects shots as they did, but since the movie's so far off this, feels like just a taste of what is to come.

No kidding, and this movie doesn't appear to have the "cruddy CGI not helped by extra months of work" problem experienced by Ghost Rider and (to a much lesser degree) Spider-Man 3. The effects here are dang good, and I hope they stay that way. Granted, Rider did a good job of bringing the titular hero to life, and there were a number of impressive effects in Spidey 3, but they could have used a lot more polish before being released.

Favreau seems to have a pretty good hold on things when it comes to CGI. I know he's said a lot of Iron Man would be done live, and any CGI would be used sparingly. He also handled the CGI well in Zathura, which I thought was rather good despite reviews. Still anxiously awaiting this movie.
Hanshotfirst113

It's good to hear him say that (and with Winston on board, you know the practical effects will be fantastic), but I think that they're going to have to use quite a bit of CGI too to make it work. But really, at this point, I'm eating my words, since the trailer definately looks anything but generic. Ketchup please :D?
Anyone who wasn't expecting some use of Ozzy was deluding themselves.
That said, they went to town on exactly how much Ozzy they used to set the scene. Even the title was announced from the song.
Oh, and Robert Downey Jr. seems to make the perfect jerk that needs to redeem himself for the film.

Not that I wasn't expecting it, just that I was annoyed they actually did use it. Mr. Highwind's "fan trailer feel" description sums it up well.

That speech that goes about "The best weapon is not the one you don't have to fire but the one you have to fire only once. This is the way America did it and does it" characterizes him more like a jerk. Or at least is not a speech a hero would make.
It probably states he was a greedy bastard who makes all his profit with military dealing, not caring for the lives of people dying in wars and something. And after he becomes Iron Man he starts to think differently.

Coming Soon (http://www.comingsoon.net) reports Iron Man director Jon Favreau has confirmed that composer Ramin Djawadi will score the comic book adaptation for Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures. Here is how his agency describes the artist:
Composer Ramin Djawadi started out his musical career as a guitar player in numerous bands in Germany. In 1995 he decided to move to the US to earn a bachelor's degree in film scoring and guitar performance at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. While still in college he became a member of the band "My Favorite Relative," who were nominated for seven Boston Music Awards in 1999. In 2000, Ramin moved to California to join Media Ventures, home of Academy Award Winner Hans Zimmer, which led to collaborations as a composer and arranger for Klaus Badelt including featuring films "The Time Machine," "K-19: The Widowmaker," "Basic" and "The Recruit." Recently, he contributed music to Badelt's score to Jerry Bruckheimer's summer blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean." He co-composed and produced the score for "Thunderbirds" together with Hans Zimmer. Other collaborations with Zimmer include "Something's Gotta Give" and "Batman Begins". Recent scores are "Blade: Trinity," the hit TV series "The Grid" and the Disney movie "Buffalo Dreams." After completing the score for "Ask the Dust," he is currently working on the hit TV series "Prison Break."

Just saw the trailer online. That is EASILY the coolest superhero film trailer ever.
... No wait. Anybody remember, years ago, when the "live-action" Scooby-Doo was getting ready to come out? They had a trailer where you see a silhouetted pointy-eared figure standing in front of a huge mansion window on a dark and stormy night. The camera moves slowly toward him, as a deep bass voice-over is saying things like, "When evil arises, it must be opposed"; and you're thinking the whole time (or I was anyway -- I didn't know they were making a live-action Scooby-Doo before seeing this particular trailer), "Hey, this must be a new Batman movie! I didn't know they were making a new Batman movie!" But then just as the camera gets close to the figure, the voice-over says something like, "A hero emerges from the night to protect us from the horror"; and all of a sudden lightning flashes, the lights in the mansion come up, and you see that it's Scooby, who says, "Rho me? No wray!" and runs off camera. Now that was the coolest superhero film trailer ever.
... No wait again. Scooby isn't a superhero. So I guess that was the coolest trailer ever to imply that it was going to be a superhero film trailer.
WhatEVER. Anyway, the Iron Man trailer utterly rocks. LOVE the fact that they actually went with the profoundly obvious & used Black Sabbath as Stark first emerges in his early bulky armor. Predictable? Painfully so. But it was DESTINY, dammit.

Wow and a half.
I tell you, take issue with the quality (acting/writing) of the movies all you like, but between X-Men, Spider-Man and all of the secondary properties that Marvel's gotten into production and on the big screen - Daredevil, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, bloody Ghost Rider, and now Iron Man - they get the visual look of these superhero characters absolutely spot on. Brilliant.

One shot of him in particular walking looked a little stiff and video gamey. I'm hoping for the best, though, because the action sure looks sweet.

I just finished watching the trailer for this movie on Marvel.com, and I must say, the Iron Man suit looks so real and awesome! I like how Iron Man has those bright shining lights coming out of his eyes and his chest. This definetly is a movie worth watching, and I think it truly lives up to its potential:) I'm sure that this movie will be a big hit just like the Transformers movie back in the summer of 2007. The destroyed city and exploding fire really adds to the effect. I can't wait until May 2,2008:D

I don't even like the character, but I am pumped for this film and this summer! I'm already getting nostalgic for the days at the end of sixth grade I spent at the beach with my family and friends right after Spider-Man came out. Although now a lot of people try to say the movie wasn't that great, it was causing such a huge sensation, as everyone remembers. I saw it on a theater on the boardwalk five times and the merchandise was everywhere. It was just plain summer fun, with a good story and good characters (which I think is always the line between these types of films and "stupid" summer films like Transformers). I'm hoping this film is the same type of movie, before the meatier Dark Knight comes a few months later.

I never quite understood that trend of doing a domestic poster and an international one. Specially because I don't see the difference in concept between them. Why the domestic poster will appease more the U.S. audience and the International one would be more suited for the rest of the world?

Thanks to my mom being involved with law enforcement, I discovered this the other day.
The 11-99 Foundation, a non-profit charity which provides benefits and scholarships to CHP family members, is holding a fundraiser to attend a special screening of Iron Man on May 2 at the Paramount Studios lot in Hollywood, CA. Packages range from $1,000 to $10,000 and come with some memorabilia, such as your name on a "Walk of Fame" star replica, but individual tickets are just $125. There will also be cocktails and a gourmet buffet before the screening.
You can find more information on the fundraiser here (http://www.chp11-99.org/events/events_show.htm?doc_id=674645). My mom and I are thinking about going (for the individual ticket rate, of course), since it may be the closest I ever get to attending a premiere-like screening. And the money goes to a great cause, too.

Yeah, for the two of us it would only be $250. But then we have to factor in hotel and gas money since we live about four hours from the L.A. area, though it's a trip we make at least once a year for various reasons, and altogether it could run us around $400. When I saw the price of the packages, I said, "Jeez, for $10,000 you should get to have dinner with Robert Downey Jr." :D

Yeah, it seems kind of odd. I can't imagine his cameo was so long that the scene had to be cut for timing reasons, unless other factors where in play. But still, it would have been a great surprise for general audiences.
EDIT: Just realized something. It seems the only way a team-up movie could happen is if all the characters were at the same studio. Iron Man is Paramount, but aren't the Hulk movies at Universal?

According to Superhero Hype (http://www.superherohype.com/news/topnews.php?id=7109), Certain theatres across North America will be participating in an Iron Man sneak peek on May 1st:
So we called up Tony (Stark that is - yeah, we're on a first name basis) today and told him that fans are just going nuts having to wait for the release of Iron Man on Friday, May 2nd (and we also snuck in a bit about how it's not fair that international fans get to see the movie as early as April 30th).
His reply? He said he'd contact the studio folks (AKA Paramount) and not a few minutes later he called back (apparently he was flying to London for the premiere there... no, not in a plane!) and said he had arranged a special deal for us in the U.S. of A.
He said the studio will now start showing the movie at 8pm on May 1st around the country, but that you should check your local theaters, because he wasn't sure which theaters would participate in the early screenings.
We told him he rocked and said goodbye, as we didn't want to waste his valuable time.
Official release date is still May 2nd but some theatres will have a sneak peek the day before.
Also, the running time for the movie is 125 minutes and 47 seconds (Source (http://www.bbfc.co.uk/recent/index.php?media=film)).

A quick Google search also pulls up the same answer of 125 minutes. This is actually pretty sweet. Early on in production Jon Favreau had commented (at last years SDCC I think) that he didn't think Iron Man would be much longer than 90 minutes. But it looks like after everything was put together, it ended up being about a half an hour longer than originally thought.

From an interview with director Jon Favreau. Not to get anyone's hopes up, but, does anyone think, based on these comments, that Sam Jackson Nick Fury scene may actually be back in the movie when it hits theaters?
---------------------------
Question: What didn't make it into the theatrical cut that we can expect in the director's cut DVD?
Favreau: What do you want me to say? Do you want me to say Hilary Swank? Do you want me to say Nick Fury? Is that what you're reaching for? What is going to be there? There's going to be a sequence between when Robert takes off to go to fight back in Afghanistan, where there's a whole party sequence in Dubai that we had filmed that just felt like it just slowed the momentum down. There's a cameo from Ghostface Killer that was there, where him and Tony Stark knew each other.
Question: So the Samuel L. Jackson sequence isn't going to be in the theatrical version?
Favreau: You didn't see the movie? I love the echo chamber of the internet, because that's where things become reality.
Let's put it this way. I think the challenge has been first people getting to know who Iron Man was, and I think that the online fans and the did a tremendous service to me and the film by bringing it to everybody's attention, because this is the big water cooler. And when they saw the footage at Comic-Con and saw all the online leaks, either the ones we sent out there with releases or ones that found their way through spies. People started to get Iron Man, to anticipate it, and the word started to spread, and it worked its way into the mainstream and now everybody wants to see the movie.
The problem is that for two years, we've been in dialogue, and there weren't a lot of surprises left, so I guess my job is still to try to figure out how to make it feel like people have been waiting for this movie and watching all the stuff online and all the minutes and minutes and hours of material that seem to be on there, to have it be still a fresh experience when they see it. My job is to still entertain the people who have been following along everything.
When something doesn't seem like a surprise and everybody expects it, it sort of makes it not fun, so I just want to try to still remember the fans that have been watching diligently and have enough there that makes it exciting for them as well.
I have never lied to any of the fans. I just try to be ambiguous if I think in the long they would prefer I don't answer the question.

In the talkback for a review (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=155443) over at Newsarama, the Nick Fury cameo IS IN the final movie. Supposedly it was kept out of the pre-advance screenings/critic screenings if only because it was a geek moment they wanted to keep a surprise as much as possible. It was put in for the general release prints of the film that started showing up this week.
The short scene comes AFTER the credits (so stick around for those) where Nick Fury says this.....
"So you think you are the only hero on this world?... welcome to the Avengers Initiative"
So, going with what Favreau DIDN'T want to say in the above Q&A, one can guess that it is true and it is in there. I guess we'll all know starting tomorrow night when the general release prints are shown.

If you ask me there are 2 explanations.1) that the people that work at theater that VileOne went to just stop the film before scene appear. 2) the copy that they got doesn't have scene in it which would be really strange for the copy they got not to have it since they all supposed to be the same.

I caught a preview screening and found the film to be well written, with a plot that is well-structured, but decidedly lacking. I'm not an Iron Man fan, and know nothing about the character...but...

...spending the first half an hour of the film in Iraq (or somewhere thereabouts) dealing with terrorists while our hero builds a suit of armor while video camers watch him...was tiring. I get that Marvel has always made their comics socially relevent, but I was questionning whether or not this Iraq stuff really dated back to the origins of the character, or if they were trying to bring a timely message to the proceedings. Honestly, it felt heavy-handed, and I'm really tired of seeing that part of the world portrayed like this.

More disappointing, though, was the lack of pizzaz. This is a superhero movie, right? So where was all the magic? X-Men 3 must have overloaded our senses with special effects and splashing CGI sequences, because this movie felt mundane by comparison. Don't get me wrong, it worked...but for a comic book movie, it didn't thrill. The villain was lackluster and his plot was obvious from the get-go.
The very big upsides, however, were Gweneth and Robert, who provided much of the chemistry and comedy relief that really made the film enjoyable. Oh, and of course, credit must go to...

...for being the funniest thing the whole picture.
I'm hoping the sequel brings some more interesting characters and a lot less social relevence to the screen, because I'm sure the leads can carry more than this.

Actually they were just updating the war in which Tony Stark is injured since he became Iron Man in the Vietnam war and that was in the 60'.

Well, James Harvey's going to crack some sk(r)ulls if this keeps up. People may want to wait to talk about the film in the talkback thread.

My understanding is that the scene was NOT attached to press screenings. However, it was attached to at least one advanced screening as proved by the youtube vid.
And apparently it will be included in the general release prints.
Thread closed. Discussion moved to official talkback (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=210079).
Note #2: Until the sequel is officially announced, there is no need for an "Iron Man 2" thread as of yet.
