How do you pronounce it?

A co-worker today told me of a story of this kid he went to school with in grade school who was supposed to write down his favorite game, and he wrote down "Aunts In My Pants." Of course, it was supposed to be ANTS In My Pants, but both were pronounced the same, but the previous game would be just...wrong!

Personally, I pronounce it with the "u" being pronounced. Why should the "u" be silent?

Hehehe, when I read your subject title, I had absolutely no clue what you were talking about :P

I pronounce it "Ant" most of the time. It's just habit.

I usually go with "ant" unless "aunt" slips out by mistake,

aunt (ar-en-t) - non of this American 'ant' thing. My aunt (ar-en-t) is not an insect - i think I would know if this was the case..

Aunt - Supposedly the "correct" version, I think they say it like this in Europe and such.
Ant - American version? :D

I say it like ant, cause I was brought up saying it like that.

Like a lot of people here, I usually pronounce it as "ant," although if you factor in my strange southern accent - a blend of Texan, Tennesseean, and the influence of strict English teachers - it comes out sounding more like "aan'".

Secretly, I think it should be pronounced as "ahhnt" in order to avoid confusion with the insect, but pronounce it that way where I live, and most people will give you strange looks. :o :D

"Aunt". And in case anyone's curious, I *do* in fact say to-MA-to and po-TA-to, with the "a" being pronounced as "ah".

~You say tomato, I say toMAto, you say potato....~ You know. ;) And the whole mishgebabble with the "cah-fee" and "intEResting".....

We're a mixed family here. I use the 'ant' pronunciation while my wife uses the more proper sounding 'aunt'. We're both the same age and both from (and still in) NJ. I guess it's just the way those around us pronounced things.

I pronounce it "aw-nt". I used to pronounce it "ant" until I realized that it's probably not the proper pronunciation and also didn't want people to get my relatives confused with insects. I think that most people in this area go with "ant" though.

I say "ant." And yes, my exposure to the south has gotten me to saying "y'all" every once in a while. Nya.

Well, I live in central Alabama, and here, just about everyone pronounces it "ant". That's how I was brought up to say it.And no one here has ever gotten it confused with the insect.
