View Full Version : Great Scenes In Marvel Animation
Hey,
Throught Marvel's extensive animation history, we've never seemed to have a show that fully captures the full potential of the characters. A lot of them had great writing, but network restrictions and awful visuals would sometimes follow. Or, even when they managed to get great visuals, either the writing was weak, it wasn't given a great deal of time to develop properly, or the network censors got in the way.
However close they come to greatness, something always gets in their way. But, there are some great moments and great scenes in Marvel Animation, even if the rest of the episode is rubbish.
Which scenes in the various shows stand out to you? Is there any moments which make you tingle every time you see them, or a moment you vividly remember from the first time you saw it?

The final scenes of the episode Mindbender from Xmen Evo are my favorites:

The reason why is because the animation was just....incredible in those scenes.

I have a habit of not paying attention to the plot when it comes to 'toons; I'm usually too engrossed in the animation. But I did like how they built up to Mystique impersonating Xavier from "Hex Factor" to "Day of Reckoning II".
I also liked in the beginning of "Beast of Bayville", where Hank is having a fit in the bathroom and begins reciting poetry. I just thought that was a great touch. And at the end of "Mindbender", where Mesmero is "talking" to Apocalypse. We never actually hear anything; it was like The Fith Element.
As for animation...
-I'm with GuardianKid13- that last bit in "Mindbender" was amazing.
-The "music video" in "Walk on the Wild Side".
-When Wolverine wakes up and attacks the guards after being taken to Trask's compound in "Day of Reckoning I".
-The scene at the gas station in "The Stuff of Heroes". Great animation and we get to see Logan kick butt in his civvies to boot. :D
-Just about every scene in "X23". The only reason it looked good was because it had a heavy anime influence, but that works in Evo.
-Almost all of "Dark Horizon II".
Obvious stuff from XMen:TAS, but:
The X-Men's first skirmish with the Sentinels way back in the first couple of episodes.
"Hey Tin Woodsman!......."
Beast's smackdown of the FOH in 'Beauty and the Beast'.
Xavier's farewell in the final episode to all his students.
I always liked that part in Spidey's show, I don't know which one it was, but where Connors says to Peter that he doesn't know what exactly is going on, but his DNA is mutating him into SOMETHING. And they both don't know what. Obviously this is in the Neogenic Nightmare saga somewhere, but I can't remember which one.

That's from the very beginning of "The Mutant Agenda" which is the episode where the X-Men guest starred.

It's actually the end of Battle Of The Insidious Six, in which Spider-Man has Dr. Conners examine his blood after his powers returned to him. The scene from The Mutant Agenda is a flashback to that episode.

X-M:E Blind Alley where Cyclops is trapped in a confrontation with Mystique is pretty well-animated as well.

Great moments for me in Marvel animation were:
1)The opening to Night of the Lizard, more episodes should of looked and felt like that one( if they had the means )
2)The way Doc Ocks tentacles attacked spidey when they first met was beyond awesome
3)The Insidious Six unmasking Spider Man
4)Venom is born
5)Spider Man waking up in the symbiote outfit
6)Wolverine trying to defend evryone from the weird green alien thing
7)Cyclops shooting his optic blasts in the desert was cool
8)Xavier's watch magnitizing to his wheelchair
9)Spider Man growing 4 extra arms
10)Wolverine fighting Sentinels in the mine
11)The X men tombstones
thats all I can think of right now, and I wish I knew how to post pics of these .

"What's the matter Mystique? Can't you see?"
In particular, the shot where Mystiqe is standing in the light with the camera circling around her. One of my favorite shots in all TV animation.

Agreed, that was a pretty cool moment.
A few off the top of my head...
In the Hulk episode "Fantastic Fortitude" when Banner is talking to The Thing and he says something like "But you don't know what it's like living inside a monster", and Ben replies "I think I'm gonna let that one go."
Spider-Man revealing to Mary Jane who he is and proposing to her.

Re: Blind Alley- personally I thought that episode was one awesome scene after another, all strung together beautifully. I've never seen better animation on a TV show, even on Gargoyles. Great episode.
I thought the combination of Avalanche's rampage and Jean's speech in "Mainstream" was one of the series' better scenes, too.

The final scene of STNAS is lovely (Maybe I'm the only one who loves it. Stuff of heroes and the Captain moment in Evo. I love so very much the Sinister episode of TAS it's well almost perfect even if it's so not X-men. I have to say I enjoyed the two times we get an animated hornhead in Spidey and FF. And the swinging scenes of the STNAS are4 awesome I know a lot of people hate the series and I understand why but it has pretty nice moments too.

perhaps my all-time Evo moment was when Apocalypse repelled Wolverine just by clenching his fist...and then the superclap that floored all the X-Men & Acolytes...then in S4 when Apocalypse "killed" Magneto. It seems all the Apocalypse eps had great bits: Mindbender, Under Lock & Key, etc...
there's a webslinging scene in MTV's series, "Keeping Secrets". it starts w/ Cheyenne suiting up as Talon w/ blueprints in the BG, then shows Spidey slingin' about the rooftops. The music in the background almost sounds like the X-Men EVO theme (that 3-bar tune). Not surprisingly since Evo had a little musical nod to the 90s X-Men theme in the Spyke intro up (the pool scene)

that was probably the best animated Evo ep ever. Note you can see the dust particles floating in the air...and that's not animator dandruff!

I also liked the animation in the following Evo episodes:-
Cruise Control
Beast of Bayville
Stuff of heroes.
One scene that's always impressed me in Spider-Man: The New Animated Series is the prolouge to Mind Games, Part 2, where Spider-Man easily dispatches of Kraven's henchmen before he shouts out "I'm gonna rip you apart Kraven!" I remember seeing that for the first time and thinking it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. I still think it's one of the very best moments in the season.

"Mindbender" probably had the best animation from X-Men: Evolution and the finale of that episode was just really well done. The best scene for me was the big reveal of Spider-Man wearing the Black Costume in the 1990's series. It was just so well done and just easily tops the majority of the series.

I think some of the great scenes in Marvel cartoons don't even come with the best animation. The first two seasons of X-Men: The Animated Series had some great scenes even if the animation wasn't what alot of people would consider great. The opening fight between Wolverine (in a tuzedo) and the Cyclops robot remain just one of the best scenes in Marvel cartoons. There is some real intensity and emotion there. You can just feel Wolverine's jealousy toward Cyclops as he screams "You can't have her" and then peirces the robot right in the heart.

Ok Ok I agree it's a pretty darned good one. Too bad Miss Stacey never make it to other series I personally would kill for her in TNAS.
Heck TNAS was just great. Electro killing the bully is just crude it's so unfriendly and yet I like it.

Spider-man TAS used to be my favourite show as a kid, because I remember how fast and quick the animation used to be. I must have been impressed pretty easily because looking back on some of those episodes now just make me laugh :p. Still, there are a few cool animation sequeces that I really liked on the show like the very first episode "Night of the Lizard". It had the best episode animation out of the entire series. My second favourite has to be Doc Ock's first episode. The warehouse sequence with Spidey dodging those arms is still pretty cool to see :D
MTV Spider-man: I don't know why this show got bashed so much, but the animation in almost every episode was always lightning fast. Spidey has never moved this perfectly in any cartoon to date.
X-Men Evolution: This show is worth to watch for some of the fight scenes alone if nothing else. Especially with the start of Season 3, the show finally hit its stride and kept knocking every episode out of the park. 'Stuff of Heroes', 'Mainstream', 'Blind Alley', and my most favourite episode 'Uprising', which showcased some really slick and smooth Spyke fighting moves and powers :D

I love it in X-Men TAS when Magneto helps Xavier fight all the Sentinels Mastermold sends up for the X-Men to face (saying "did you think I would let you die alone?" or something to that effect.) In 'Beauty and the Beast', all of the scenes between Beast and Carly as well as Wolverine revealing Graydon Creed's real father to the Friends of Humanity were great.
Whilst I watched most of the X-Men TAS episodes in the 90s when I was much younger, I only saw the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix sagas for the first time a couple of years back. Even though by then I knew the Phoenix storyline, there are loads of scenes in that which are brilliant, especially at the end.
As for X-Men Evolution, one of the best scenes is Rogue driving out all the personalities she has absorbed in 'Self-Possessed', and most of the battles in Ascension Pt 2 made for enjoyable viewing, particularly Berzeker vs Storm, Wanda vs Magneto and Jean vs Xavier. In terms of animation, any of the scenes in Mindbender and any of the scenes with Angel were the best for me.

I'm impressed every time I watch the Hulk fight in Ultimate Avengers. I loved the placement of it in the film. I didn't come into the film expecting the Hulk fight to be last, so I thought it was so cool as I realized that it was the big closing number. There's some real nice money shots during it, such as Thor's big slow-mo Mjolnir swing at Hulk. All in all that's a scene that always delivers for me.
I loved when Cyclops locked in Mystique during the big government facility break-out at the end of Day of Recovery. That was an awesome little twist that instantly grabbed my attention. It ended perfectly with Mystique refusing to spill her guts and subsequently getting locked up in the facility. Definately one of my favorite bits from X-Men Evolution.

A lot of scenes from X-Men TAS really stick out as some of my favorites. Most of them are from "The Cure" which is one of my favorites.
PYRO: Lookin' for me, love.
ROGUE: I sincerely doubt it, unless your name happens to be Godfried Adler.
PYRO: Alas no, the name's Pyro. In the mood for a hot date?
ROGUE: In a bullseye.
*THROWS PYRO THROUGH THE WALL*
CABLE: I'm looking for Dr. Adler.
PYRO: Of course you are old darlin' he's a very popular fellow.
*CABLE SHOOTS PYRO AND HE FALLS IN OCEAN*
CABLE: Don't call me darlin'.
APOCALYPSE: I know more of this world than you have ever dreamed. That is why I must destroy it.
And then from the "Dark Phoenix Saga" when Wolverine is about to kill Jean: "We knew it could come to this!" even though he can't go through with it.
