View Full Version : Otaku Who Think Everyone Has Time to Chat About Anime
I was in Suncoast's anime section on Saturday, figuring out which DVDs to add to my collection. Suddenly, some random guy who looked like the stereotypical otaku (fat, smelly and pimple-faced) came up to me and said, "So you like anime, huh?" I replied, "Yeah, I'm a big anime buff." He then proceeded to ramble on and on about why he didn't like Gundam Wing's physics, who his favorite seiyuu were (actually, they were dub actors, but he still used the Japanese term) and the mythology of Eva. This went on for about 20 minutes (during which I wasn't listening to a thing he said) until I said, "Wow, you sure know your stuff." Then I told him I had to go to the bathroom and would be back in a minute, which was of course a lie (I got a soft pretzel and then went home). Of course, I missed Naruto because of this moron. Thank god for next weekend's encore at 8:30.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, some people just don't know when to keep their mouths shut. Not every anime fan is as fanatical as these guys. Some just watch it for fun and don't even buy DVDs (they rely on Cartoon Network and/or fansubs) while others (like me) watch Cartoon Network, buy DVDs, occasionally watch fansubs and chat about anime online. Many fans, however, just watch an anime and enjoy the story, but these uber-otaku seem to think that they have to know every last bit of detail. I mean, I couldn't care less about why Asuka's mother hung herself or who killed Kaji. Sure, it's interesting to think about, but it's not important enough to be obsessed with, especially since it's not real. Most of the time, an uber-otaku will ramble on and on like the guy I ran into, and the other person won't even care, just like I didn't. Worse, these people seem to think everyone's an anime fan. If some guy goes to buy an edited Naruto DVD for his 10-year-old son, the otaku will spot him and start bashing him for buying an edited DVD, and the father will know nothing about "dubs," "seiyuu," "4Kids," or whatever else the otaku spews and will probably call security. They just don't know when to shut up.
Anyway, what do you guys think?

Thank god for next weekend's encore at 8:30.
You mean 9:30, right?
There's a Naruto marathon from 7 to 11 next week, the encore is at 9:30, followed by two new episodes from 10 to 11.

This happened to me once when I was buying manga. A guy came out of nowhere and wanted to look through my books to see what I was buying. He also went on about some series. I listened and he lefted.
The funny thing is I love listening to other people talk about there hobbies and favortie whatever. This helps me because I work at Best Buy and I don't watch, play, listen to most, if not a good 75% of the stuff we carry.
( sorry for misspells)
I've never actually had it that bad before. Sometimes I do get into conversations, but they usually only last 10 or 15 minutes, which is about as long as I usually stay in Suncoast anyway. :P

I'm guessing "Yeah, I'm a big anime buff." probably gave him the impression that you would care about all the "finer" points and details of anime.

I've had this happen to me a few times, but luckly I know what shuts them up. Talk to them about Loli. :anime::eek::o
Haw, I've had that happen a few times too. When I was going to ring out some books at Borders, and the cashier lady suddenly starts going on and on about Evangelion, Vampire Hunter D, and some other stuff. I didn't have the heart to correct her when she got some info wrong though. I just smiled and nodded.
I mean, I'm pretty fanatical about everything I'm into. But I'm never the one to start a convo about it with a stranger. Still, sometimes I've had nice conversations with people who decide to engage me in one because of what I'm buying/holding/wearing or whatever. More than the bad ones anyways. I don't really mind it.

I hate the assumptions these kinds of folks make...
I'm picking up a couple more Lone Wolf and Cubs right?
And even though your chatting to the general aisle about Super Magic Angst Girly-Men, dosen't mean I want to hear it. Rather it means I want to put your ******* light out.
Christ, your **** is drawn like coloring book with saucer eyes and spends most of its time cooking up homoerotic robot fights, I'm just trying to buy this thing about Samurais from the 70's...
And because they're both from the same country WERE BOSOM BUDDIES?

Am I the only one who feels bad for all of you criticizing this guy? Certainly you all can relate to this fellow. I know I can. Geeks seek others like them, because no one else listens to the crap we talk about. Okay, maybe he went a bit overboard, but even so, cut the guy some slack.
I am always so grateful that someone else knows what the hell I'm talking about that I'll let them ramble on about manga story arcs and dubs and the cutest girls in Naruto (the last of those just happened to me on Friday when I said something about Hinata and he overheard. I don't even like Naruto, but I let him babble). If you really don't want to hear it, SAY SOMETHING! They're not going to run away crying.
And, and... well, I'm also guilty of going on and on and on with some stranger about various anime and comics. So... =P

The only time this has ever happened was when I was checking out at Borders and the cashier and I got into a short conversation about Miyazaki films, and I helped him remember the name of one of them (Princess Mononoke). That was it.
Most of the time, if I hear any conversations, it's between two other people and I have no connection to it.

Some dude came up to me rambling about Mahoromatic at a Borders once just because I was browsing through some manga. So I went, "yeah, mmmhmm, great" but he didn't get the point until I said "oh wow, it's getting late" and actually got him to leave so I could go back to looking for something to buy.
Now I've got nothing against other anime/manga fans but for the love of god if you can't carry on a conversation about anything other than anime I don't want to talk to you. You like anime, I like anime, but that doesn't mean I want to talk about it to you.

I quickly found myself in one of these anime conversations over the weekend when I joined FYE's card program and grabbed some Gankutsouu and Kyo Kara Maoh DVDs (2 for 1 geneon sale)... The thing is, we didn't follow the same type of series (new rule: anime is not a genre in of itself) so I just excused myself not long after paying. I don't seek out stuff on bounty hunters and vampires... I like the surreal funny stuff, the shonen, the shonenai... But I appreciate the opportunity to talk with fellow fans. I got a person added to my myspace friends list and some new manga to follow out of her starting up a discussion with me in Borders. I'm not holding someone's enthusiasm for anime against them, not when I went to the midnight POTC show this past Thursday dressed as Luffy. :anime:

Here's my story on one encounter:
It all started 4 or 5 years ago when I was in a Canadian HMV browsing their then large anime tape shelf. This fat guy with blond hair and goatee and wearing a black shirt comes up to me as I was browsing the tapes and says "You like that show?" I told him "yes" and then he starts telling me about the shows he likes to watch and what fansubs he's seen.
So, I was telling him about shows that I thought were funny and told him that I saw the english dub of Sailor Victory the other day at my anime club and thought it was the funniest anime I've ever seen. The fat idiot then goes on to tell me that "Nothing is funnier than Excel Saga". I was stunned at his offensive stance on one comedy show. He then has the audacity to tell me "Yeah, that shut you up." Then, he goes on to tell me that the first few episodes will make you go "uh huh, uh huh", then the show will have you rolling on the floor, and finally you'll be in stitches. Now, for the record, I've only seen a couple of episodes of Excel Saga and wasn't particulary amused by it. He then asks me if we show hentai at the anime club. As any other person would say, I said "no". He then points at me and says "good" like he's about to rip me a new one if I said anything otherwise. After a bit more of his grandstanding, he finally left and I went home shaking my head wondering how someone could be this much of an ass.

Dude, why didn't you just say you had to leave to watch Naruto? I think you're making this into a bigger deal than it is. As for the fat, smelly, and pimply thing, well, I'm pretty self centered, so I actually like seeing fat, smelly, and pimply guys because it means there's less competition for good smelling, in shape, relatively clear faced people like me.
Am I the only one who feels bad for all of you criticizing this guy? Certainly you all can relate to this fellow. I know I can. Geeks seek others like them, because no one else listens to the crap we talk about. Okay, maybe he went a bit overboard, but even so, cut the guy some slack.

I agree. I mean, I've never gone up and started a conversation with someone, but I like it when people start conversations with me. What can I say, I like talking. I mean, honestly, what does it matter if someone's talking to you about anime, or sports, or food or whatever. Conversation is conversation. Maybe the real problem here is that some people just don't like being social...

The images included are screencaps from a recent Something Awful weekend web flash tub, and the images are in reference to a post from a certain lolicon-centric forum whose name I'd rather not repeat. Strictly speaking, that image is totally legit in that context. Here, it's a little brutal - that aspect of the anime fandom isn't the largest by any means, but one has to agree that dealing with people who act like "lolicon" is a badge of pride and who incessantly want to discuss it are probably some of the most annoying and/or downright creepy otaku you could run into. Granted, I could say the same for people into shota, guro or really anyone into a subset of hentai that'd be considered illegal or generally morally rephrensible if ever depicted with real participants.

I don't have a problem with people talking about anime. I have a problem with those who are very annoying or down right disturbing.
The guy that walks around the mall with a Naruto headband all day long while trying to tell everyone why his opinion on anime and life is more valid than everyone else is very annoying. A lot of these annoying fans I've come across at a couple of anime clubs I joined. I ended up leaving each one because of the most ridiculous conversations that would come up. Not to mention whenever there was DDR, everyone forgot to baith that week. Again I have nothing against anime and just had a few bad experiences at a few clubs.
Loli is a perfect example of those few individuals that are down right disturbing. The internet is a scary place. Things that no man could even begin to fathom I've discovered here and have made my jaw drop to the floor numerous times. Yet there are a ton of small groups that come up with their own freaky ideas and fantasies. Stuff that even I couldn't make up. Stuff like this.
http://tinypic.com/fw583m.jpg
I mean what guy in their right mind thinks up this stuff? These are the fans I stand far away from. However I have a ton of friends who enjoy anime and cartoons as much as I do in my area and on the net that act on a better level than certain groups of people out there.
Karl Olson

I guess I'll close it since it's not a positive thread, but I'll also leave it on the note that there are people out there who actively annoying in their otakudom if not out right besmirching the general rep of the fandom, and really, it's not exclusive to any group of people or following - it's out there in the world, and to take umbrage with people noting it or reacting to it is at points misplaced blame. While it is noble and righteous to think that any action can be tolerated, at points, something, even if it is as simple as noting or discussing the problem at hand, has to be done. One's rights end where another begins, and there are times when the viciously annoying or creepy impinge on the rights of others.
If any of you want to discuss that thought further, PM me.
