Go Japan. Apparently, for the first half of the year, the DS lite has been the best selling system. And the DS "phat" has been the second best selling system. Combined, DS sales equal 3.9 million, which essentially beats the PSP four to one.

I'm not surprised. Considering DS's incredible game library and PSP's failure with the UMD division, of course the DS was going to own the PSP saleswise.

Sony may be the master of home consoles, but Nintendo is the master of handheld consoles.

Personally, I don't see this changing in the next generation of video games. The PS3 will be the best-selling home console, and the DS will be the best-selling handheld console. (I think that the Wii and XBox 360 will survive, too, but I don't know how many years the PSP can survive under these conditions. Especially with the UMD format already obsolete, replaced by memory sticks.)

Eh the PSP games have appeared on the top list of most selling games per month on a regular baisis, granted not as much as the DS but it's certainly not doing poorly in Japan

That Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest Crossover and it's own version of the Brain Training Sims are the big hits currently

there are those vacation island game series that's big over there as well

The PS3 will be the best-selling home console.

I had my doubts about this statement, but then I had a sudden flash of insight and Sony's devious plan was revealed to me! With the price of the PS3 being what it is, it would still appear to be the "best-selling" console even if Sony only sold, for example, 10 million units while the Wii sold 20 million units! Fanboys everywhere would be touting these exceptional dollar figures and completely ignoring the fact that less units were sold.

Very clever, Sony.....you diabolical fiends! :p

That's for 6/26-7/02. Only one PSP game even hits the top ten, and it's even beat by the older DS games of Brain Age and Animal Crossing. NDSl sales are six times PSP (which is understandable, NDSl is newer and a cultural phenomenon). PSP's doing better than XBox 360... but that's assumed, sadly.

... and, like the blogger says, I too would like to meet the eight people who bought an XBox...

Read Gamespots Weekly Japan Top Ten, it says different it also goes farther back

25k units certainly isn't poor by that listing you posted, it may not be doing as well as the DS in Japan but by it's own means it's certainly a stable platform for games

I don't think its any suprise. Handhelds is what Nintendo does best. I didn't expect the PSP to be atop the market, but it's nice that the system atleast has legs, is selling decently, and has a future.

Well, ports.

Sorry, I'll be fair. The new Syphon Filter is good, and I'm liking Field Commander. But to most consumers, the sony handheld is the sony console in portable form: mainly rpgs, and ports of other games. If that's your bag (and it is to sony fanboys*), enjoy the heck out of it.

I still like the PSP. I still say it's a sexy little system. I'd just like more interesting games for it.

*not an insult, I'm just calling a spade a spade

PS. When I saw the DS/PSP numbers, I knew Knux would be posting about this. I can't blame him. I'm glad for Nintendo fans to have something to be excited about.

Meh fair enough, going by the release scheduel for nary everything it seems post-summer is where all the big guns begin appearing

I personally want Final Fantasy 7:Crisis Core since it's supposedly the best out of the FF7 Compilation and then Final Fantasy 3 since the DS has just lacked decent RPGs(this one promises to be longer than it's original)

I'm not all that crazy about ports though, except if they're compilations of older games/foriegn games or ports of rare/hard to aquire games. They fill in spots in my collection rather nicely, and I don't need to pay the price of a system to play them.

I think it's great personally that the handheld market has two stable systems, I'd ask for a third one by microsoft but they still need to put some good exclusive games into the 360 before they expand(eh Over G Fighters and now Apparently now Chromehounds is getting really low reviews).

Xbox sales have always been pitiful in Japan.

Actually, whether that's meant as a joke or not, it wouldn't help to make Sony's image any more positive - Wiis actually cost far less to make than a PS3. While a PS3 costs 900 dollars to make, a Wii costs about 175, so if Nintendo prices it at 200 or anything higher, then they'll actually gain money, while Sony takes a huge hit.

Final Fantasy 7CC is a PSP game, correct? I know FFIII is the DS (3d) game. Are there cross-overs I'm not aware of, or are you just pining for all hand held FFs?

That's a smart way to shop for them. I have a lot of games, as I've gotten them as they came out over the years, so remakes (updated ports) don't do much for me.

My problem with the PSP ports are the stripped down ports of current gen games. I see too many of them for the total number of PSP games on the shelves.

I'd ask for a third one by microsoft but they still need to put some good exclusive games into the 360 before they expand(eh Over G Fighters and now Apparently now Chromehounds is getting really low reviews). The 360 game issue in my mind shouldn't have a direct correlation to the possibility of an MS handheld. The two should be entirely different factions of the MS umbrella. My question would be, what can you bring to the handheld market that isn't already there, or how can you improve things? What would make your product necessary to me?

And I'm still picking up Over G when it drops in price.

Well, capitalism always works best when there's a healthy competition, with the one caveat that the competition doesn't reduce the quality of the product(s) brought to the market. Too many competitors can do this (and how you define "too many" competitors can differ from industry to industry), just as too many or too few exclusive features (such as games) for each competitor.

So... do you think the video game industry best thrives when there are only two companies fighting for dominance, or three?

And to think three years ago we all were worried about Nintendo. Way to go Big N.

No kidding! I was slapping my forehead when I heard about the DS, but it's hands down one of the best systems I've ever owned. 'Til now, handhelds were no comparison to my consoles. Now, it's up there with the best.

I had seriously counted Nintendo out and was waiting for the final curtain. And now, it looks like they slipped their fine blade of brilliance deep into the armour of the hulking juggernauts.

Hat's off to ya, Nintendo. I'm sorry I ever doubted ya! :anime:

The DS is currently changing the way people percieve videogames...in Japan. But with talk of the actual console race, I cannot see Sony winning next generation. They have angered too many hardcore gamers with their arrogance, and alienated the casual consumer with the price range.

Please direct link; I did a search on Gamespot for "Weekly Japan Top Ten", and nothing showed up.

That for last week: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6153673.html

And it's exactly what you posted Chad Lee.

Here's another from the Japan in May: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6152388.html

New Super Mario Bros still owns Japan but the crossover of DQ and FF did fall between May and July but Mario still owns.

Here's the week before the last link:

IMO, PSP flopped in Japan.

Chad Bonin

So, I was correct, and the Gamespot article further agreed that the PSP only had one game in that top ten. Thank you, Chris.

Gigan, I must ask, why would you say it "says different"? Did the list for that week get retconned? Websites have changed stuff after it's been posted (I should know, I'm adding this in), and if it had, I'd start to severly question Gamespot's reputability.
