View Full Version : Themyscira - Technology or no?

We have only seen a glimpse of Themyscira (Paradise Island) and it looks like it might have some scientific modifications. Will technology be on the island? Should it be? Would something like the purple healing ray be useful to the JL?

I didn't get any sound off the clip on the newspage of the commercial for next week's Justice League episode "Paradise Lost" but...(deep breath!) I don't think there's any technology on the Island. Picture ancient Greece - that's pretty much what Themiscyra is like!

Well, maybe they do. Ancient Greece or no, several thousand years is a long time. There may be some technology, but they probably rely on magic.

I guess I am just a purist - I would like to see Themyscira stay "ancient" without modern technology. The Amazons' mysticism and faith always made me believe that they could accomplish anything without technology.

Hmm. Maybe it's just me, but I find this a funny (peculiar) attitude, since ancient Greece was the progenitor of what we nowadays consider science and technology. Euclid, Pythagoras, Aristotle and Archimedes, anyone?

Considering Hippolyte's comments in "Secret Origins" about the gods protecting Themyscira, I would be surprised to see computers or modern weapons there. That was what I meant by my comment. If you solely rely on your faith in gods, then you really wouldn't be pursuing 21st century technology to defend yourself or live your life. Or?

Yeah, I know what you meant. And I agree totally. :)

I just thought it amusing to see the idea (probably more present in Karkull's post) that naturally the ancients would be more interested in magic than in science. Greeks were plenty into magic, but they also had the strongest scientific bent. That's all.

No argument here, Maxie. I agree. I'm just a Greek myth buff/fan. :)

Well, my justification was that the Amazons were a group of warriors, not scientists. Unless they've become complacent from a lack of adversaries I figured that most of their attentioned would be focused on combat and worship.

And my saying that they'd rely more on magic was probably a little much. Unless it was a particular warrior's speciality they'd probably use magic as a means of worship. But it really all depends on which way the writers want to take it.

I' dlike to see the island technology-less. I imagine the island as rolling hils of green and stone statues. Id' look sorta bland with huge techie looking stuff.

I agree wholeheartedly. Green hills, poplar trees, columns, etc.

i dont know, i think theymescria should have some technology, but still be like old fashioned. maybe something like in atlantis, where its ancient, but has a pretty impressive technological development.

well, since i only read alittle ww hear and there, i was always confussed about whats the proper way to refer to the island, theymescria or paradise island. but i could be totally off and they could be two seperate things, umm, can someone clarify...

Themyscira, pronounced Theh-mis-keera, is the name of the ancient city on the River Thermodon where the Amazons first made their home. The island they inhabit now is also called Themyscira, but it also has been referred to as Paradise Island.

As far as technology, how would the Amazons come across technology if they haven't left the island? From "Secret Origins" I got the impression that no one has left the island. They have oracles to tell them what is happening in the outside world, but I don't think they would tell the Amazons about technological advances... how would they generate electricity? create machines?

Well, the presence of a Wonder Woman costume in Secret Origins can mean one of two things: 1) someone had left the island as "Wonder Woman" or 2) there was, at the very least, a plan to introduce an ambassador to "man's world." They may leave the island, but not very often.

That is a very good point. If the costume is there...then it must've been used before. I bet this'll be addressed int he WW episode. It is an interesting dilemma, though. Maybe the island can have a bit of technology, but it can't be the way we have it, but technology in an Amazonian fashion. Old-fashioned-like.

Perhaps there would have been a contest, but Diana jumped the gun because J'onn telepathically summoned her and took the costume which she knew would go to the victor.

As far as technology, we won't know until we see more of Themyscira. :)

but if theres no tech on themyscera, how does that account for the invisible plane? :D

Maybe there is no invisible plane. It's just a mass hallucination suffered by the Amazons. (That's why it's invisible.) :D

There really is no invisible plane anymore. The Lansinarian technology which sometimes looks like an invisible plane isn't something Diana uses (as a plane, at least) very often.

SOMETIMES looks like an invisible plane? Er... what else is it used for? Color me intrigued. So what's the deal?

The technology used for the invisible plane is from the Lansinar people from beneath the earth. Diana encountered them in the Byrne era. The substance is linked to the mind of the user, and can be shaped into anything the user can dream up... like the WonderDome from the Yanick Paquette days of WW.

It only took on the invisible plane for when Hippolyte used it... at least to the best of my knowledge.

I would guess that, since we didn't see any elements of technology in Paradise Lost, Part 1, that perhaps Themyscira doesn't have it. But we haven't seen Part 2 yet.

I would have to say, if I were an Amazon seeing Diana touch down onto Themyscira with the Javelin-7 (probably having never seen technology before), I'd probably faint.

If they're not going for mechanical technology/advancements, then I would hope that they would (at the very least) show advancements in handheld weapons and other crafts.

Swords, shields, axes, spears, arrows, bows, pottery, weaving, healing, etc. The Amazons have had thousands of years to hone and prefect their techniques. Their weaponry, not to mention their crafts (the pottery in the museum from "Paradise Lost" pt1 for example) should be among the best, if not the best in the world.

I'd be sorely disappointed if these kinds of things were never brought up.

You know...the Purple Healing Ray would just be too cool not to have some kind of story on the "how, why, when and where" of it all. :)

Well since in just about every WW continuity I'm familiar with, Diana became the emmissary to man's world through a contest of skills, I'd say that the amazons are not lax in keeping up their warrior skills. But I would also expect that there would be some technology (more like Atlantis than America) so that they could have cloth and buildings and pottery, etc. Of course, the Amazons have a very strong relationship to the Gods (who are REAL to them - they appear and interact) so the Gods might provide them with what is needed - a twist on paradise and the garden of eden, if you will.

I was pretty happy with the Paradise Lost pt.1 and look forward to pt. 2. :)
