Why did they use the blonde, pre-Crisis Hippolyte? It's been over 15 years since the raven-haired Amazon has been Diana's mother - why the jump BACKward?
It would almost be like giving Diana an eagle on her breastplate or short hair...
Any ideas?

Howdy,
Offhand, I can come up with 2 reasons why its blonde pre-Crisis Hippolyta:
1. Bruce Timm is a known fan of the Silver Age heroes, and isn't bound by any means to the current comics continuity. He chose the blonde Hippolyta to be closer to the era he had more affinity with.
2. BT likes blondes better, and brunettes and redheads are already represented by WW and Hawkgirl =8^).
I wasn't keen about it because there aren't all that many natural blondes in Greece (same reason why I didn't care much for Disney's Hercules' appearance, even though I thought the movie was kind of fun).
BT has deviated from comics continuity on several counts. Hal Jordan was never Green Lantern, it seems, and Hawkgirl is an amalgamation of the Silver and Modern Age Hawkgirls, and not purely the one post-Crisis.

Yup. It would appear that the animated DC universe combines various elements of DC's history into an "ultimate" version. The creative team has done it that way for almost ten years now.

Still, I have to agree that I find Hippolyte's hair to be distracting. I think she made a much better brunette. Besides, now Diana looks nothing like her mother!!!

Fine with me... I don't pay much attention to the fact that a character has been using Grecian Hair Dye... :)

If they're following the comic book origin (where Diana was made out of clay) then she isn't blood-related to her mother anyway. So it's cool.

Well, from my recollection, Hippolyte was pregnant in her first incarnation and her unborn child was Diana, so in a way, they are blood-related... if you want to stretch it.

It's so viewers (especially smaller children) will definitely not be confused if she and Diana (in Amazonian garb) appear together in a scene and seem to look too much alike. "Just to make sure..." as they say.
Besides: Brunette - 15 years, Blonde - 45 years

I understand that, but I enjoy the brunette Hippolyte so much more than the blonde. The brunette H had more character depth, as far as I am concerned.

Of course she has more depth. She appeared in the 1980s comics, not the fluff pieces of the 1960s or the failed-relevence of the 1970s. Of course, before 1986, 'Lyta was never more than a cameo character anyway.
