View Full Version : What cult TV shows would you wanna see at 5:30?
With "Karate Commandos", "Gigantor" and "Mr. T" happily spreading their "magic" at 5:30 AM on [as], it seems only right that other obscure shows would be picked up for 5:30 AM airing. What shows would you "like" ;) to see at this time?
Personally, I think that "Captain N: The Game Master" would work well. It's a really poorly done, obscure cartoon from the '80s. Although, the rights might be hard to get. Also, "Portal" from G4TechTV. It was strrrrrrrrrrrrrrrange.

Classic Astro Boy. Pair it up with Kimba and they'll have an hour of the God of All Manga.
Of course, I'm guessing you mean after Gigantor runs thru again (it's scheduled to come back next Tuesday morning).
Of course, Captain N works too. And, heck, pair it up with the Saturday Supercade shorts of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr! BEST POINTLESS 5 AM HOUR EVER.
Yeah, I knew about "Gigantor" coming back.

Welcome to the forums! Enjoy the food in the Cafe, avoid talking about anime in the DC forum, ect ect.
(Oh, and avoid the bear cyborgs. They like to eat flesh.)
Thanks a lot. I've been coming here for years, but just now decided to sign up.
Back on topic, "Funky Phantom" could be an interesting addition to the 5:30AM timeslot, as well. It doesn't even air on BOOM, from what I've seen.

ADV's Anime Network currently has the airing rights to both the "Battle of the Planets" and "G-Force" dubs, though I suspect the rights to the latter have either run out or will run out soon seeing as it hasn't been aired in more than a year in any form.
It's Cartoon Network's first anime series dammit!

Going by what CN has the rights to:
Go-bots (i doubt hasbro would make a big deal if it was in the graveyard slot)
Turbo Teen
Saturday Supercade

Yo Yogi!
Yogi's gang
Rambo
Funky Phantom
Sealab 2020 (with 2021 eps snuck in)
The Pink Panther and friends
The 70s non-violent tom and jerry (just so i can see how bad it really was)
"GoBots" seems more likely to air on G4. Seeing as how "G.I. Joe", "Battle B-Daman", "Beast Wars" and "Transformers: Cybertron" (all Hasbro properties) have all aired on there recently as part of "ACTION BLAST!".

On the Animation Side: Nearly any video game cartoon! Captain N, Pac-Man, the Saturday Supercade shows, Pole Position, etc. Also: Grape Ape, the Tom and Jerry where they were friends (the awful 70s ones :) ), and perhaps Inch High Private Eye.
Since they acquired PeeWee, then....
Live Action: Woops!, Pryor's Place, Women in Prison, Hey Vern! It's Ernest, Cop Rock, highly doubtful but... MST3K (they could either air it on Saturday or everyone random night they could play this instead of repeats of the night's programming), that's about it for me.
Edit: Thanks mikestorm.

second on the Duckman - it should at least be coming out on DVD
dvds may drop in '07
CBS recently purchased/merged w/ Paramount. I suspect CBS will push for more tv-to-dvd content e.g. Duckman & Daria for starters. Duckman would most likely return to Comedy Central than jump to a Time Warner network.
I vote for SGC2C since we'll never truly have the entire series on home video
"Clerks: The Animated Series" would be a great fit for [adult swim], but it should air around 11:00 or 11:30, somewhere where it can get good exposure. I'm surprised it's not already on, considering "Clerks II" is coming out on the 21st.
I've got some picks here that could work for 5:30:
ALF- No, not the animated series. The original. (live-action)
Pete and Pete- It's a cult series that had definite adult appeal. (live-action)
Sonic SATAM- It was the only good U.S.-made Sonic series. (animated)
The Weird Al Show- It's weird. It's somewhat adult-oriented. (anim/live-ac)
Mr. Show- DEFINITELY adult. Not sure about the 5:30 lead-in. (anim/live-ac)
And of course, Invader ZIM, even though it'll never happen.

I think either the original Dragonabll, Ultimate Muscle, or Funky Cops would be suitable for the 5:30am time slot on Adult Swim.
Almost everyone here at the Toon Zone forums claim that Ultimate Muscle: TKL is suitable for Jetix; however I believe the opposite, for it has adult references such as a wrestler having a human butt/bottom for a head and Kid Muscle farting and urinating on a wrestling ring in front of a large audience in one episode, I don't remember which one. The same goes for The Tick, which is currently on Jetix at 10:30pm and reruns show up at 5:00am. Those two shows should either be on Nickelodeon, Comedy Central or Adult Swim instead of Jetix for the reasons I've stated in this paragraph.
Marvin Tikvah
07-09-2006, 02:21 PM
But toilet humor isn't really adult. Butts and farts are things that little kids will bust a gut for.
As for 5:30, if they have Pee-Wee, could they possibly get Mr. Rogers? :D

Yeah, Sam & Max would probably perform well at that time slot. I think Life with Louie, C Bear & Jamal, and the other cartoons from the Fox Kids days might also perform just as great as the other shows I've mentioned before.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 could work, as the MST3K hour (Syndicated version of the show, broke up selected Season 3 and 4 episodes in half and cut out about 9 minutes per episode).
If they like rerunning the same 6 episodes over and over, at least run a GOOD show, like Clerks TAS.

Okay since we're talking Old / Classic/ live action stuff.. here are some ideas i have..
(Robots R Us) : Gigantor, Voltron (Both the Lion and Vehicle versions), Tranzor Z, Mighty Orbots, Robotech (The Entire 85 episode run!), Even Megas XLR and Transformers (the S1 series by Hasbro)
(Classic 80's and the obscure shows): Thundercats, Silverhaws, Jem, C.O.P.S., Bionic Six, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, He-man, Defenders of the Earth, Thundarr the Barbarian, Goldie Gold and Action Jack, Superfriends, even Plasticman and maybe Fang Face. G.I. Joe (the entire series by Hasbro)
(Classic Anime): Kimba the White Lion, Battle of the Planets(G-Force),Speed Racer (Yes Run the entire 72 episodes of the 1970's, and not the 1999 remake) Thunderbirds 2086... just to name a few!
(Arcade Craziness): Captain N, Dragons Lair (Yes there was a Series) Saturday supercade (Even the Space Ace shorts), Pac-man (Wokka Wokka)! Dungeons and Dragons (Even though Disney's Jetix has this one, Why Not?)
even Pole Position.
I mean iof you had all these you could run CN's 5:30 slot for up to 3 to five years with all this.. just by simple rotation
that's it for me..

Classic Astro Boy. Pair it up with Kimba and they'll have an hour of the God of All Manga.
Of course, I'm guessing you mean after Gigantor runs thru again (it's scheduled to come back next Tuesday morning).
That would be great. As far as I'm concerned, you can throw in the 1980s series as well. (To tell the truth, one of the all-time great mysteries is why they didn't acquire and run the '60s and '80s "Astro Boy" series on CN to reacquaint today's audiences with the character, before debuting the new show on KWB--you think KWB would have had any success with "Scooby Doo" if CN had ignored the original show? Then again, that run was mishandled from beginning to end anyway, so maybe it's no surprise the geniuses behind that disaster couldn't think of anything as simple and sensible as that.)
Oh, if you don't mind a little aside on "Gigantor"....has anyone seen the episode where someone plants a bomb on a plane, and Gigantor saves the passengers by grabbing the plane and speeding it to its destination ahead of time, before the bomb goes off. The villians then countermove by calling again with a bomb threat, only this time they won't tell the cops which plane it is this time.... I've been continually looking for that episode and haven't seen it yet.
*gags Golgo13 up*
"G-Force". He meant "G-Force" people!

It's Cartoon Network's first anime series dammit!
Didn't Boomerang run BOTP recently?
Going by what CN has the rights to:
The 70s non-violent tom and jerry (just so i can see how bad it really was)
By Jay Hanna and Joseph Barbera themselves, oddly enough. The basic idea was that Tom and Jerry would work together as pals instead of fighting each other. OK, that might have worked, after all they did it occasionally in the original cartoons. But all they did was simply transfer the conflict to where both Tom and Jerry were fighting Spike the bulldog. What was the point of that?
I'd like to see Megas XLR on that Timeslot.
I second that motion. :D
I third it.
Transformers
Transformers Beast Wars
Freakazoid
Any of these three could work.
The third has been gone far, far too long. I would love to see "Freakazoid" again.
Well if the requirement is cheesy 80s shows how about the king of 80s cheese, Original He-man.
Voltron would be good too.
Either would be great. Especially if CN didn't skip the vehicle-team episodes this time around.
Captain Scarlet (the British 1960s puppet-animated series done by Gerry Anderson creator of Thunderbirds)
Thunderbirds 2086 (a anime "spin-off" version of Thunderbirds)
Rocket Robin Hood
the Mighty Hercules (1960s version)
Danger Mouse
Fat Albert
Mighty Max
Goldie Gold and Action Jack
Frankly, I would rather see the "Thunderbirds" themselves, one of the greatest shows of all time. "The Mighty Hercules" and "Mighty Max" would both fill the slot well.
Pole Position
A very underrated DiC classic. The trouble is, DiC has gotten pretty shabby treatment on its shows from CN in the past, and that was before DiC had its own network blocks.
Superfriends.
Yes, I'm serious.
Well, if you ran only the first season (even if you'd have to two-part the episodes to fit it in the half hour)--yeah, it would be a great fit. If nothing else, it has a fantastic opening theme.
Sonic SATAM- It was the only good U.S.-made Sonic series.
Last I heard, BKN had it (and DiC Kids had BKN's "Sonic Underground"--rights issues, don't you love them?). I think it's high time BKN started getting some stuff on CN (come to think of it, I wish CN would air "Monster Rancher", it's better than "Pokemon" or "Digimon", and would rule on about any spot on the schedule if you simply left the 73 episodes alone--which none of its previous networks did, sadly).
Dragon Ball Z (Cell arc) or even good ol' Dragon Ball.
No, really, I'm serious.
So am I. I think I'd rather see "Dragon Warrior" (even if they only finished 13 of the episodes).
Jem and the Holograms
I second.
Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles.
But, it's like Blue Gender, except way better.
I never heard it put quite that way before, but I'd say you're right.

:coyote:
Any of the robot shows would do (why couldn't we have a 5:30 a.m. slot devoted just for giant mecha shows that CN seems intent on killing everywhere else?)
As far as "Speed Racer", see "Pole Position comment above (though frankly I wouldn't mind seeing both the 1960s and 1999 series both together, Nick never allowed us to see the end of "Speed Racer X").
Finally, there are a couple that nobody has named so far, but that I would really enjoy seeing:
"Eight Man" (think of it as "Gigantor" with the action and melodrama ratched up a notch).
"Galaxy Rangers"
"Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs" (hey, throw in "Bravestarr", and you've got all three of the 1980s cowboys-in-space epics).

True, I LOVE the 80's series (I have the boxset), but I think the reason why the other two series didn't air is because they may be too old to air anywhere but 5:30 AM.
And Scooby-Doo is a different case since it's still loved by children and CN has full rights to it.
