View Full Version : John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #3
Harley
01-14-2002, 07:03 PM
Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"! Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly Toon Zone sketch! Every week, John Delaney will draw up a new picture based on the results of the poll above. That means that *we* fans choose what the picture will be! The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE ! Delaney will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be DC characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Sound good? You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.
So...let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!
P.S. Keep those requests coming in!!!

Batman's god, so he goes first...
Then come the females descending in order of hotness...
And THEN come the villains and so-called "others."
Interesting... :p

Bizarro is the best choice on there. Luthor took Superman, the second greatest hero on the planet, and made an exact clone of him. Then the clone took on a deformed, monstrous appearance. Reminiscent of the pale hulk that was Frankenstein's monster, Bizarro is a testament to the natural truth that perfection can not be manufactured. Let's not do him the dishonor of surrendering our collective vote to our libidos. Talia can wait -- she's immortal.

So I came over to the Comics board? For like the first time ever? Because that's where the poll is now? And I was feeling sorry for our poster Penguin? Because he really wanted the Penguin to get the votes? So I was going to vote for the Penguin? But something kept pulling the cursor in another direction? But I fought it and fought it and finally got the vote for the Penguin registered? But then I was feeling really weird and scrolled down to read the responses? And then I understood? And now I'm talking like I'm from California?
So can someone help me to break the spell?

Right on, Carter! I voted for Bizarro. Not because he'll win, but because I want more Supes characters in the polls. It wouldn't be so bad if the characters in the list weren't repeating everytime, though. I mean, is Penguin going to be on there till he wins?
And I *did* email Harley my list suggestions, too, so that's covered. :)
Ah, well. I know John'll do a great job on whoever wins, so I'll just wait a bit longer....

Hi Randy
The Question is a character created by Steve Ditko (creator of Spiderman). He's a faceless vigilante who first appeared in Charlton Comics which was bought by DC. You can currently see him in DK2 and I drew him animated style in ADCU. Trust me he's very cool. But don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to influence the vote. The Question

Thanks, John! The colors on Cassandra were actually taken from some of the Batman-Superman.com model sheets (specifically Lois Lane (purple) and Big Barda (gold)). The skin tones are also from Lois. Babs' yellows were some I found on my own in mspaint.
Thanks again for the kind words!

Well, I think the reasoning is that this board is directly connected to Toon Zone's Comics page, which will soon have a section archiving all of John's drawings. Personally, I think it should be on the Drawing Board, but Harl's the one in charge of this.

I voted for Bizarro. It's been awhile since I've seen a picture of Big 'ol deformed blue.
Me am happy...
I voted CAPTAIN MARVEL. I don't follow the comics, but what I've read about him online is that he's pretty much equal to that of Superman. I hope Green Arrow's on the poll next week. I'd like to see Mr. Delaney draw him in addition.

Howdy all,
A lot can happen between now and Sunday, but here's a question for the board: old, original BTAS Catwoman, new TNBA Catwoman, old-series comic book Catwoman (purple leotard, with tail), retro green-cape-purple-suit Catwoman, or new-new-Darwyn-Cooke Catwoman? I vote for either of the last 2, personally (nostalgia for the former, and her outfit is oh-so-cool in the latter).

Personally I'd vote for BTAS Catwoman (well, really I'd vote for TNBA Penguin, but that's not gonna happen this week :( ), but this is John's decision. He is the artist and should do whichever one he wants. (My understanding is we're going with animated style though.)
Randy H
01-17-2002, 11:29 AM
My suggestion would be for the Catwoman spin-off design Bruce Timm did back in the days of BTAS. It's basically the same design as BTAS in terms of structure, mask, and face, but loses the gold belt and adds wrist gloves. The costume is all black, with rim light, although, like I said, the level of facial detail is the same, aside from the two-tone mask.
IMO, it's the best Catwoman design the animated team has done.
Just another option for ya' John! (as if it wasn't already hard enough to pick a design!:-)

John, not to presure you into doing anything (you're doing more than enough as it is :) ) but if you have "Batman: Animated" by Chipp Kidd (a great book on the history of B: TAS and TNBA), give a flip to the Catwoman section and check out that awesome desgin for her all black, proposed spin-off outfit! It'll blow you away!!!
(and hopefully inspire a you as you sit down to draw Miss Kitty :) )

Probably cause there are alot of Batman fans here...
Now, Flash, Bizaro, The Guestion (I think), Captain Marvel and Green Arrow all aren't related to Batman...that's 1/2.
Blue Beetle certainly wasn't in either Animated show...

Hey Gang!
(why do I sound like Freddy from Scooby Doo?)
I have no problem drawing whatever characters are voted on whether they be DC or Marvel, Dark Horse or Image whatever, but I guess the guideline (this being TOONZone and all)should be that I'll draw them in the animated style. As for the Catwoman design (if she The Question should win The Question) I think I prefer The New Batman Adventures design with maybe a little of the JL design principle thrown in like I did on the Batgirlz.
But we'll just have to wait and see who wins The Question
Cheers

John Delaney said:
"I think I prefer The New Batman Adventures design with maybe a little of the JL design principle thrown in like I did on the Batgirlz. "
Well, John that's pretty much what the design I referred to is all about. Obviously you're familiar with the JL designs, and while those designs are alot more detailed than the TNBA versions, they're also more designey than the original BTAS. The design I mentioned, while being rounder than the TNBA version, also has more highlighting and facial detail, both of which are JL design signatures. At least from what I've noticed. :)
But hey, whatever you decide will be cool!

Here's a simple method to determine a tie:
Whatever character's name comes first in the alphabet will win. Example:
Cyclops & Daredevil
Obvious winner: Cyclops.
That's a good way to determine the winner.

Cyclops & Daredevil
Obvious winner: Cyclops.
That's a good way to determine the winner.
Hey James
Good one, I like that method. That's what we'll do!

I thought that we could just let John pick in the event of a tie. He is going to be the one doing the drawing! :D

Hey, John, I was getting pretty stoked about seeing your rendition of Catwoman, too! I'm still excited to see the Question, though, as I've never seen him before at all! And I'm sure there'll eventually be a Supes-related poll, too. I was just giving Harley a hard time..... :)

If Catwoman would have won, I would've liked to see Mr. Delaney draw the current comics design, which I saw online a few weeks back. It would have certainly been different.
