View Full Version : I just can't drink soda anymore...

Am I the only one who feels this way?

I quit drinking any type of soda for some time now, and I decided to buy a liter the other day, and it just tastes nasty. I don't drink coffee or anything either, just water, milk, and different kinds of fruit juice.

It just feels like I'm drinking liquified sugar. Which I guess I was.

Yeah, I'm starting to go that way..

I used to drink so much Sun-Drop (I think this is a NC exclusive soda..) that I just look at it now and it makes me want to throw up. Then I switched to Pepsi, and I'm starting to feel the same way about it.

Right now, I'm mostly just drinking Gatorade

I'm the opposite. I can't drink anything without a flavor.

Right now, I'm mostly just drinking GatoradeOddly enough, Gatorade is amongst the leading causes of tooth decay in children. I just thought that was interesting, especially since I expected it would be soda.

Makes me think of Red Bull. That stuff tastes like liquid Smarties and I can't stand it.

But soda, that I can drink.

I used to drink soda nonstop, but recently my consumption has slowed to a trickle. I still love it, but it feels really unhealthy.

I don't drink nearly as much soda as I used to, and I think it's because they changed the contents or something. When I was a kid I would easily guzzle-down five Cokes a day, now I have several 24-packs in pantry and I only drink 1-2 a day tops. I reckon I only buy it cause it's cheap.

But since I'm drinking Cola while typing this I'll say "yep" not to be a hypocrite.

Oh yeah, the only time I just have to have a fizzy drink is right after or while eating pizza/hamburgers etc. I cannot fathom drinking apple juice or something with french fries and greasy food like that.

I used to drink a ton of Mountain Dew back in the day and a decent amount of Coke and Sprite as well. I hardly drink soda anymore though. Now I generally stick to juice and a lot of water. I feel a lot healthier now.

I rarely drink soft drinks. I've never been a fan of the fizz. I drink soda once every few months. However, I am a heavy coffee/tea drinker.

Wait, NC exculsive soda? Sun-Drop is a major favorite arround here, and it's not NC.

As for the orginal topic, I still drink soda, but only once in a while.

I used to drink cola like crazy, but I stopped after getting 5 cavities. Now I limit myself to one 20oz cola a day while at work/school. I haven't had a cola outisde there in about 6-7 months.

No one I know drinks Red Bull for the taste. I drink it to enhance my workouts at the gym.

I stopped drinking soda almost ten years ago. Not just for health reasons, but because I lost the craving for it. Plus when I'm eating a meal, I don't like a sugary beverage to taint the taste of the food I'm eating.

I still drink artifically flavored drinks, but I can't handle carbonated drinks the way I used to. I drink Hawaiian Punch and Vitamin Water all the time, but I'm just not into Sprite the way I used to be.

Never mention Smarties and Red Bull in the same sentence again. Red Bull is basically cough medicine in a can.

I go back and forth with soda. During some weeks I'll consume what I consider far too much, or I won't even drink a can. It depends. Whenever I binge, lately, though, I balance it with water. I drink a lot of water, now. The problem with that, though, is no flavour gets old fast. So I'm always dying for a Coke after drinking so much water.

I think cola is nasty, but it's the main beverage in my house, so I deal. Sometimes I'll drink a lot of it, especially if we have Coke in the house. Recently, I've been drinking Pepsi, and so I've been drinking less. Pepsi hurts my teeth too much. However, I like rebelling against my brain which has been programmed to like Coke.

I still dig white sodas. Just got some Sprite and 7up from the store, yesterday. And though it's not white, I could drink a lake of Mountain Dew. I love it sooo much. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y113/KurtyWagner/blush.gif

I can still drink soda, but I would rather drink something like fruit punch, lemonade, or chocolate milk instead these days, since I think that they taste better than soda.

I'm getting fond of Minute Maid's Berry Punch and Hi-C's Fruit Punch drinks.

And oh yeah, Slush Puppies (A slushie type drink that comes in assorted flavors, and can usually be found in convenient stores) are awesome too! :anime:

About three years ago, I had horrible acid indigestion, which prevented me from drinking anything carbonated, otherwise I would feel terrible the entire day. Ever since then, even though my acid indigestion is gone, I haven't drank much soda (or pop to some people), other than an occasional Coke at a party or something.

I'll probably drink one soda a day, usually with my lunch. Other than that I drink tea or something else thats not carbonated, drinking too much soda can be bad for you.

I'm noticing a lot of Red Bull hate. I love the stuff, it tastes good and gives me energy. Only problem I have with it is the can isn't as big as Monster, so I dont' usually get it. But, I haven't found an energy drink that I haven't liked, so I may just be weird.

I drink soda, probably too much, and my teeth have suffered from my past endeavers. It does feel unhealthy when I drink it, so my next drink is almost always just plain old water. The soft drink of choice is Pepsi, with Mountain Dew being second.

I have, within the past few months, forced myself to only drink sodas on the weekends (starting on fridays). Mainly it was because without some restriction placed on me, I will drink soda every day, which feels unhealthy to me. I also did it because caffeine really affects me, I'm not sure if it's physical or mental, but I can't sleep after caffeine for hours and hours.

Since I only drink on weekends, I tend only to drink my absolute favorites, such as Mountain Dew, the original and Livewire (oh, how I love livewire!) Though I will have Pepsi or Dr Pepper on occasion.

I have never drank a full can of Pepsi, Coke, Dr. Pepper, or any soda. My mom never gave me soda as a kid, so I never developed a taste for it. My father would occasionally have a six pack of Pepsi in the house, but the carbonation didn't appeal. I just started drinking seltzer and ginger ale recently, and even then, it's once in a blue moon (upset belly).

Not to mention it can cause diabetes. If you brush twice a day you won't get any cavities. I don't trust Listerine because it makes my teeth feel weak.

I used to drink soda nonstop, but recently my consumption has slowed to a trickle. I still love it, but it feels really unhealthy.Yes. When I was a child (sitting on the couch watching my 'toons), I would literally guzzle cup after cup of Sprite. That didn't stop until we (the family) started getting cheaper... thus, the alternatives set in. Bottled water, juice, Sunny Delight, Capri Sun, Minute Maid, etc. I still drink soda, but not as much as I used to. But, when I drink soda, I drink heavy... the cups aren't as big as they used to be, so I keep going back.

All that fizz... makes me think that the soda's working actively to decay my teeth. And, with braces, it could.

Chris Wood

No, actually (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irn_Bru).

That's wild. I wonder if you can get it in the states. I'll have to try it someday (although the part about it being made from girders is a little disturbing).

I'm confused here. All those "cheaper" alternatives would seem to be more expensive than soda. It really doesn't get any cheaper than soda.

I live in North Carolina. Yes, Sun Drop is NC exclusive. I learned that in Social Studies.

I drink soda and I like it, but I'd rather have a Gatorade or some other fruit drink like that. I just don't drink a lot of soda (I hate yellow-type soda like Mountain Dew) If I drink soda, it is usually Sprite, Coke or Pepsi. I used to drink Dr.Pepper but I got burned out on it (especially Wally World's Dr.Thunder YECH!!!)

Don't believe everything you learn in school. Sun Drop may be manufactured in North Carolina, but it's also produced and sold in several other nearby states.

Never tried it myself. I'm thinking we should have a thread for rare sodas though. Like Barq's Red Creme, which I can't find on the east coast.

I beleive you can, but your better off ripping your own arse off as I heard it's the liquid equiviant of caviar over there (Plus Jhonny Goverment Boy hates it).

Also, that was a marketing campain, an awesome one at that, the Gurders thing.

You can get Sundrop in Southside Virginia. Cheerwine too.

I used to drink something like six cans of Pepsi a day, for almost 20 years, but I cut it out and switched to Sprite because I wanted to avoid the caffeine. I drank just as much Sprite as Pepsi, though, so last year I cut it out altogether. Probably lost 20 pounds just from that. I was also worried my insane Sprite habit would contribute to adult onset diabetes, which runs in my family.

Now I mostly drink spring water, but I'll have the occasional lemonade when I eat out. I also have no plans to give up Peach Nehi as a very occasional treat or Frostie Cherry Limeade around Christmastime.

...It just feels like I'm drinking liquified sugar...

Me too! I've never been able to drink regular sodas, mostly because of that feeling. Especially in the case of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper, it feels as if I'm drinking slightly watered down maple syrup... Ugh!

But what about diet sodas? And what's the deal with aspartame? I see websites like this, that say that eating foods and drinking drinks that contain aspartame will, over time, cause health problems to develop... possibly even brain cancer.

http://www.dorway.com/ (javascript:ol('http://www.dorway.com/');)

http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/index.htm (javascript:ol('http://www.mercola.com/article/aspartame/index.htm');)

But if aspartame is so dangerous, how could it have been approved by the FDA for use in foods and drinks? Well, Wikipedia has the story of aspartame's controversial approval by the FDA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame (javascript:ol('http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame');)

Then, according to this website, aspartame is safe!

http://www.aspartame.org/aspartame_myths.html (javascript:ol('http://www.aspartame.org/aspartame_myths.html');)

So, I don't know WHAT to think. I will say that I do like my aspartame -- I love Diet Coke, and iced tea sweetened with Equal or NutraSweet. And God knows I've drank enough Diet Coke and sweetened iced tea to give me a brain tumor by now, if it were dangerous. Maybe the people who actually got sick from consuming aspartame got sick because they turned out to be highly allergic to it?

"It is well-known that aspartame contains the naturally-occurring amino acid phenylalanine, which is a health hazard to the few people born with phenylketonuria, a congenital inability to process phenylalanine..."

I just don't know. What I DO know is that I don't want years of drinking Diet Coke to end up becoming a brain tumor that kills me.

What do you think? My severe lack of knowledge in biochemistry really bothers me. Maybe I should go to Barnes & Noble and start reading up on the subject? (And I'll probably end up drinking a Diet Coke while I read, too...)

I'm the opposite. I can't drink anything without a flavor.

I've got that problem too. And if aspartame is bad for you, then switching from, say, Coca-Cola to Diet Coke doesn't help either.

I've tried many, many times to drink ice water with lunch & dinner (I'll drink 1% milk, or orange juice with breakfast)... but without success.

What alternatives are there to sodas then? Iced tea seems like a good idea, but if you put sugar or an artificial sweetner in it, it doesn't seem any different. Any ideas? I'd love to kick my diet soda habit. :)

I started a diet last summer and cut out sodas except on weekends. When I do drink soda I mainly only drink Pepsi One, which to me at least tastes like regular Pepsi. There's also the occassional Cherry Coke Since I cut out soda and coupled with cutting out most junk food I'm now under 150 lbs and feel a lot healtheir. Since I only drink it on weekends I don't have a taste for it and since I mainly drink Pepsi One any regular sodas taste like drinking maple syrup and usually gives me a stomach ache.
