Rated: T for "Teen" (Mild Language, Use of Tobacco, Violence)
MSRP: $49.99

Short Description:

Dirge of Cerberus traces the story of the mysterious Vincent Valentine in the first action game based on Final Fantasy VII. In this character-driven action shooter, players will be able to customize their firearms, dispense strategic melee attacks, and use a limit break technique to transform into a powerful beast with special skills. The story of Final Fantasy VII continues to unfold three years after the events of the seminal 1997 title.

Features:

Unravel the past to protect the future as Vincent Valentine’s story is finally told.

Modify Vincent’s weapons, including the Cerberus, with five different varieties of parts that directly affect firepower, range, firing rate, and more.

Three customizable gun types allow for three distinct playing styles:
1.Handgun: Attack mid-range enemies as you quickly move around the field.
2.Machine gun: A high-speed automatic weapon for mowing down close range enemies.
3.Rifle: Snipe down long-range enemies and eliminate them before they notice you.

When enemies get too close, break out powerful melee attacks or Vincent’s signature
limit break technique.

Witness cutting-edge cinematics that challenge “next-gen” graphics in a way that only the Final Fantasy series can.

Meet new allies and old friends as Midgar faces an unfamiliar threat.

The latest chapter in the compilation of products based on Final Fantasy VII.

It looks promising. A friend of mine got ahold of a Japanese Demo of the game earlier this year. It was pretty good from what I played.

I believe there has been some slight control interface changes on the international version, so I think it should differ slightly in how it plays to the Japanese demo.

May I recomend Naruto: Ultimate Ninja, Harvest Moon DS, Prey, Super Robot Taisen, or Hitman Blood Money.

I didn't, it was requested. As I've said in the past, I don't pay attention to other systems sans GameCube and DS (since they're the only two I currently play) so what comes out on other stuff is completely unknown to me.

Meh, I'm really iffy on getting this

SE really doesn't do anything worthwhile outside of RPGs and the Shoot-em Ups(which the US doesn't get)

I'm looking forward to Halo 3 more, but if anything the saving grace is going to be Final Fantasy 7:Crisis Core

Supposedly it's got all the trimmings that made 7 good, except all action-y like Kingdom hearts

Such as removing easy mode, making Vincent faster, and adding in an extra difficulty mode. So I'll be all right with it.

I think there'll even be CG Model Sheets as bonus material, but I'm not sure on that.

So is Finaly Fantasy VII officially a franchise of its own now?

I wonder if they'll make a sequel.

Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core is a direct prequel

I would like a Final Fantasy 7-2 though...they need more -2 games

like a Final Fantasy 8-2

I'm not sure I'm going to get this as I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

Crisis Core looks to be coming along nicely though.

Grapevine says that depending on how Vincent's game flies here, it would be a series about him.
So apparently he doesn't bite the dust at the end.

I'm excited for this game. A little worried, still excited. Hell, I'm going to buy it opening day because I'm leaving for England a month later. That means no PS2 until Christmas. Eeep.

Well the Japanese Version had the Play Online Features shut down due to poor preformance. Not sure how much of an indicator that is really, considering the US version has no online features. Allthough alot of the recent SE games have been appealing to Female gamers, especialy tthe Final Fantasy ones so the following is expanded from where it was on the PS1.

Allthough a Series about him wouldn't be such a bad thing, but a True -2 Sequel to FF7 akin to X-2 could really have lightning strike twice. I mean they've already set up the Universe for alot more.

The setup really is open ended for FFVII. I mean, it's a pretty balanced group of characters to work with, the series could go on forever no matter what freak of the week they use for a villain.

Actually it was the storyline play that was the major problem -- bad controls and crummy camera for Vincent. That was in conjunction that FFXI has had mixed reviews.

I don't see how it tried appeal to more female gamers than usual. You have a trio of "dream girls" scantily clad and you can change their clothes midbattle. How is that supposed to appeal to me? Or is that the stereotype that all girls like Barbies? Or that girls obviously love games more if they have female leads and in fact only play them with female leads (in which case girls haven't played FF since FF6)? Seems that it was supposed to appeal more to teenage boys who like eyecandy.

Now if you wanted to appeal to girls, you'd have Sephy, Vincent, Laguna, Auron, and other FF male hotties team up for a grand adventure and have a make-your-own character that may or may not resemble yourself be the kick ass warrior princess witha castle. Bonus minigames can have them cage fight over you while mixing music and roses and other cute stuff in between. Extra bonus points if you stitch your man up yourself!!

I doubt that's coming so quickly. As it stands, we have moaners that are complaining about the rest of the compilation as well as a load of rumours and speculation about what's going to happen on the PS3 with the original. Additionally, I doubt that they can get a fully loaded RPG out of Cloud and company after AC. With X-2, it was different because
Everyone wanted Tidus back but here, it's pretty well established that Aeris is dead as a doornail and back kicking it with Zach. This is why we have a Vincent game -- he's one of the few characters in that game that aren't fully resolved.

You have a trio of "dream girls" scantily clad and you can change their clothes midbattle. <SNIP> Seems that it was supposed to appeal more to teenage boys who like eyecandy. I have to tell you for the most part, those are my exact thoughts. If it weren't for self-proclaimed girl gamers I've known (who've stretched the term "gamers" to mean "I've watched a couple of my boyfriends games") whose only purchase for themselves was for DOA volleyball, I'd be with you all the way.

Honestly Slayer, I don't get it. I admit I'm prude in some ways. But DOA Volleyball and X2 have no draw to me on the basis of costume change.

When the Sims first came out for the PC, it took me a while, but I got addicted, and THAT was an electronic Doll House. The Sims was playing Barbie.

Jaeli laughs at himself and firmly states that X2 is the best game ever made. He realizes it's crap, but he gets to change the clothes of three pretty girls. Well, two. Paine is kinda blah. So that's my (a bonafide female) feelings on X2. They tossed Yunas beautiful kimono, but now she dances. And Paine says "bring it, Punk" well. The game itself...

But forgive me. This is about DoC.

The official site's been updated a little. Looks like they explain more of the weapons system and all that. The Japanese site (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dcff7/) still trumps it because it has more goodies and better music. :p

I watched the English trailer again. I just realized Mary McGlynn voices the crazy lady with the Russian accent.

I wasn't going to say anything else, but the site's now complete. There's a fun little trivia section in the last category that has an easter egg if you guess everything correctly.

It gives you an exclusive wallpaper, but the empty space between the 2nd and 3rd wallpaper leads me to believe that there's another easter egg on the site. Anybody find it?

The game really hasn't scored all that much better than the Japanese one though

The only main draw is that it takes place after Advent Children story-wise and yet again gives the audiance a "Wait for Final Fantasy VII-2" hanger

because Sephiroth still isn't fully destroyed

I'm now in chapter 8 of DoC. I like the game a lot, but I keep seeing things in reviews that piss me off.

"It's not a good sequel to AC" or "I wanted to see what happened to the gang." It's Vincent Valentine's story. Yes there is a bit of a mini-AC event in the middle (so far), but this isn't about Cloud or Tifa or Aeris or whatever. It's a Vincent Valentine game. If you don't like the character of Vincent, even in the slightest bit, then you'll never be happy with this game.

In the same vein, "The story is soooo slow." Uhm. Main character is Vincent, someone known for being quiet until he shoots something or makes a witty comment. He's not going to go all Cloud on us and bounce all over the place with the swords. Not a funny, hyper, talkative person. If anything, he reminds me of the Crow without the psychotic tendencies. Vincent is not an action hero -- that's Cloud, and if you want that, go watch AC. Again. If you want Vincent's story and his way of doing things, then play the game. He's not going to say much, and when he does, it'll be well placed. Also, this is not an action adventure gig in the traditional sense. It has a noir novel feeling to it. If you want action and stuff blowing up all over the place, go watch AC. If you want a few booms but very wordy at times as well as being read as a novel, you'll like this game. The people who have complained about the plot aren't paying attention -- it's very noir in that the characters are trying to figure out what's going on along with the audience. Nobody has omnipotence.

The game is absolutely gorgeous. The cinemas are absolutely on par with AC the movie. Because Vincent is so quiet, a lot of care is put into his facial animation -- this is how he talks. The third-person system is still a bit wonky, but the first person shooting is quite good. It's not that big of a deal with you're willing to tinker with your controls. (I personally just inverted the camera and left everything else alone). We still have materia and bracelets, and we now have an upgrade system similar to FF8. This time, however, you don't have to go hunting for the parts BUT you choose what your weapon is turned into. So far, I've made the mother of all sniper rifles and the tiniest machine gun in history. On the other hand, you could make a long-barrel machine gun or a sniper pistol. Nothing is permanent because you're given all the parts -- it's just a matter of how you want to assemble them. You have three slots for your weapons. The Cerberus frame is a handgun, the Griffon frame is a machine gun, and the Hydra frame is a rifle. You have the three interchangeable barrels, various attachments, and of course, materia. It's nice being able to fry someone from across a rooftop. Because I've never played a fps other than the war games, it took some getting used to, but the controls do make sense after you get used to them.

The game's voice acting is well done. There are a few scenes that are straight out of noir, but there are others where it semi-soap opera, but I think that comes with contrast between Vincent and other characters and everything he could never say to people. As I said before it's a wordy game, and there is a mini movie in the middle (about a half hour of you triggering various scenes and watching a big movie).

The training session is well done. It really gives you a run around with consequences and it's very thorough. I ran it twice and was suggested to attempt the hard level (I'm on normal right now). The music is nonintrusive but it's a good soundtrack. I've been busy shooting things, so I haven't noticed.

What I'm seeing with other DoC reviews is that it's not living up to expectations. However, the expectations are flawed since they want "AC 2" or "FF7-2." They won't get it here. This is Vincent's story. He's not James Bond or Austin Powers. He's Spock crossed with the Crow. If you like Vincent, you'll like this game - noir, cerebral, not too many booms, a few hardcore "Vincent kicks ass" scenes, deep story. If you're not a Vinnie fan, then you won't be satisfied-- you'll probably watch AC over and over again instead to get your fix on how FF7 "should be."

I dunno I found the action sequences very weak, tbhere may be some memorable boss battles, but this is reminding me of the The Bouncer in many instances. The overall enemies have basic AI and are all very very plain. The Levels also seem sprace in terms of obsticals and other things of intrest.

I certainly wasn't expecting a direct continuation of FF7(I'd like that to be in an RPG) But while the almost stand-alone side story story is interesting, looking at recent and upcoming FPS you can see what this game lacks in gameplay content.

I'm pretty much on the fence with this one

Allthough it wouldn't hurt if other FPS series like halo Half life and even Hybrid FPS series like Metroid prime adopted the intreiging story aspect.

Allthough Hybrid TPS games like Mass Effect seem to be taking this concept along pretty well

well, it was as naked as the book on Eureka seven is. In fact, it was in the same position.
