Two Blackie Cartoons, "Winner by a Hare" and "Chew Chew Baby?" Nelson, you're in for a violent half hour with the Noveltoons without even going near a Herman and Katnip short. The censors would be outraged ;)

Regarding "WIINER BY A HARE" I have heard (for years) that entire ending was cut, and if you checkouy Jerry Beck's web-site he has posted the violent graphic scene.

And Yes... J.Lee and know, I know, I'll be in toon heaven :D :D

If you click on the CR store, at the very bottom of the screen, you'll notice CR secret stuff and click on that.Once there at the bottom you see very violent graphic images of Moe Hare blowing his head off after loosing the race to Tommy.I have seen many suicide gags before but this gag looks like the most violent one I have ever seen.

I think the frame grab of the Harveytoon characters came from "Matty's Funday Funnies", though......

Once there at the bottom you see very violent graphic images of Moe Hare blowing his head off after loosing the race to Tommy. I have seen many suicide gags before but this gag looks like the most violent one I have ever seen.


Actually, the plot is that Moe Hare bets on Tommy Tortoise to win the race, and spends the whole cartoon trying to get the turtle over the finish line first, only to see everything backfire. Then when Moe finally wins the race, he finds out that Tommy bet all his money on him, and the turtle is seen hauling all his $$$ off as Moe sits there with the victory wreath around his neck. That's when Moe blows his head off, with the victory wreath turning into a funeral wreath, accompanyied by some appropriate Winston Sharples funeral dirge music.

Hope I didn't spoil the cartoon with the brief synopsis, but you are right about the end gag; it's far more gruesome than any of the suicide gags Avery, Clampett or Tashlin ever used at Warners or MGM.

Wow, that is disturbing! (The suicide gag) It seems that the writers at Famous Studios had a hard time finding that fine line separating slapstick humor and graphic violence. I'd noticed some twisted moments in some of the Herman and Catnip shorts and their Popeye cartoons, but that is truly bizarre!

Umm, but what happens to Moe's corpse at the end?

After the gunshot, Moe's corpse is already in the dirt-covered grave (unseen), with the wreath around the ghostly image, which then faints/collapses into the grave. Iris out. A Paramount Picture. Color by Technicolor. Fade to black....

WNEW in New York used to cut this one just as Moe was taking the gun out of his pocket, so it took me years to finally see the ending to the cartoon.

Ahh, so that's what happened to his corpse. But just to let you know, it seems the prints from local TV networks edited the ending better that FOX FAMILY did with there CONSTANT fake iris outs, to remove a final end gag, or reference to Paramount.
