This is the talkback thread for "Gundam SEED Destiny" Still Off to a Great Start (http://news.toonzone.net/article.php?ID=11038).

I still love that Junius 7 drop.

And who is that I spy in the first screenshot? Why, it's Yzak, kicking ass like usual, of course! And in the grossly under-used Slash Zaku Phantom, no less!

Plus, Athrun's car just looks badass no matter how you look at it.

You realize, Destiny is consider one of the worst Ending in all gundam history..

And out of nothing, Shinn looses his main character position WHEN IT'S SUPPOSE TO BE HIS SHOW not GUNDAM SEED DESTINY: FEATURING SHINN ASUKA

By some fans, not all.

For me, it starts crapping at Episode 40.

The only problem is, those episodes aren't on the disc. Only episodes 6-10 are on the disc, and I'm not going to give Epsiodes 6-10 a bad score just because Episodes 41-50 sucked. Episodes 6-10 rocked, and that's what I based the review on.

Whichever disc has Miri's return automatically gets a perfect score.

I enjoyed the series up until 38.

IMO, 39 was the "beginning of the end", so to speak.

However, this really isn't the place for discussing what we thought of the later parts of the series

This set of episodes is definitely awesome, the whole Junius 7 arc is top-notch Gundam material. Discs 3 and 4 should round out the first leg of the series. To me, and probably to a lot of people, they make up the best part of the series.

1-13 > 27-40 > 14-26 > 41-50

Not to diss the teens and early 20's of course, they're basically the Adventures of the Minerva and its good times.

I just wish they'd release it faster...they could actually dub and release Stargazer over here before the series is finished if they wanted to, at the rate they're going.

Yes, 6-10 were great episodes. They were no 21-38, but still a good point for the series(excluding Kirabot).

And to everyone saying 41-50 were crap:
Can you honestly tell me 44 and 45 weren't kick ass? Honestly?

NickWhiz1
06-13-2006, 07:27 PM
44 was decent.

45 had too much stock footage and just felt like a rehash of 38.

GWOtaku
06-13-2006, 08:41 PM
There were very good 40's episodes, 41-50 just gets a bad rap because of recaps (two episodes!) and various levels of dissatisfaction with the ending in 49/50, which we've discussed extensively elsewhere.

Duke

Eh, 44 & 45 were OK, but by then, all the steam had been let out. But I'll talk more about that when we come to it.

For those wondering which screen shots weren't used:

Meyrin was a better character then Cagalli. She actually did stuff in the series.(Not a lot, mind you, but something).

Plus she was the best looking character in Destiny.

I still don't get what the fascination with Athrun x Cagalli is. They were nice in SEED, but there was no chemistry at all in Destiny.

May I suggest we transfer this elsewhere if we wish to continue? I think the TZ SEED Destiny clique (which includes me) should appreciate there are some reading these threads who don't want spoilers.

True enough. And I think we've essentialy had this same debate at least 10 times by this point, anyways.

Cagalli could have been a better character if Morosawa didn't hate her.

Besides, we all know Shiho is the best female Destiny character, so this whole argument is irrelevant.

That still makes her a better character than a good chunk of the cast.

I still love how easily Yzak, Dearka, and Athrun pwn Chaos & Abyss.

Maybe that's why Yzak & Dearka didn't board the Minerva, their pure awesomeness would end the battles far too quickly.

KuwabaraTheMan

Or because Fukuda struggles at managing a larger cast. It was tough in enough with all the stuff going on in Destiny, and a bunch of characters still got the shaft.

If the show had less clipshows(read: none), and less of those random filler scenes, we could have gotten more screentime for all the characters and had more Dearka and Yzak.

And the 'Break the World' scene is great no matter how many times you watch it(to get on task with 6-10). Fukuda's great at handling drama, but he just hasn't been able to manage his casts efficiently yet.

The colony drop (ep. 5-7) is probably the most well-executed part of the entire series, if not, then it's second to a certain fight later on...

It was a harrowingly effective moment for a Lacus song while the fragments of the colony fell onto Earth. I haven't heard the dub version of Fields of Hope yet, and I'm probably not going to, because I'm refusing to watch the dub

Plus, the Slash ZAKU Phantom is easily one of the coolest suits in the entire series. Enjoy it now, though, because I don't remember if Yzak ever uses it again after Ep. 9. It's a damn shame they didn't release an HG of it (only a 1/144 "crap grade" :( )

Oh, and Meer is incredibly annoying. That is all.

Eh, I don't really mind dub Lacus all that much, and the dub of Fields of Hope is MUCH better than the SEED songs.

I've only watched the dub of Volume 2 so far (haven't cycled back to the sub yet), and watching Junius 7 falling on Earth to the tune of Lacus singing was scary and heartbreaking, to say the least. It freaked me out.

Although Destiny has improved with better animation and battles, the dub VAs of the new characters continues to be unimpressive. I don't seem to recognize any of the VAs, meaning they must have very little experience in the profession. I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but still, they're making it very hard for me to like any of them or the characters they play. I'm not saying they're horrible by any stretch of the imagination... they're just forgetable. My love of SEED's characters in the beginning may be connected to how familiar I was with many of the VAs from their other works, and at the very least, it may take time before I really grow to love the Destiny characters as much, if at all.

I don't seem to recognize any of the VAs, meaning they must have very little experience in the profession.
Shinn is Matthew Erickson, who usually works at Blue Water. He was young Domon in G Gundam, Amuro in Z Gundam, and Van in Zoids: Chaotic Century.
Sting is Tony Sampson, who does a lot of American VA work (including Eddy on Ed, Edd, and Eddy) and was Miguel in SEED.
Auel is Brad Swaile, who's in every single Westwood Gundam dub, including Dearka in SEED, Quatre in Wing, and Amuro in MSG/CCA.
Stella is Lalainia Lindbjerg, who was Bulma in the Saban dub of DBZ, Natsumi in Ranma, and Mia in Ronin Warriors.
Gilbert is Ted Cole, Wu Fei in Wing, Kuno in Ranma, and a bunch of other roles.
Rey is Kirby Morrow, who was also Cyclops in X-Men Evolution, Trowa in Wing, and of course, Miroku in InuYasha.
Talia is Venus Terzo, Blackarachnia in Beast Wars/Machines, Jean Grey in X-Men Evolution, and Female Ranma in Ranma 1/2.
Meyrin is Nicole Bouma, who was Sweet in Zoids: Fuzors, Mint in the Galaxy Angel stuff, and Rena in Star Ocean EX.
Unato is Scott McNeil who was Wolverine in X-Men Evolution, Duo in Gundam Wing, and Hoenheim of Light in Fullmetal Alchemist.

Almost all of the above have also appeared in at least one episode of Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis as well.

Believe me, they all have experience. Well, except for Maryke Hendriske (Luna's VA), who's one of the voices for Thunderblast in Transformers Cybertron, Tsukiyomi in InuYasha, and Anetta in MegaMan NT Warrior. And Jonathan Holmes (Arthur's VA), who was Marco in SEED, Angus in Master Keaton, and Takemaru in the 3rd InuYasha movie.

I stand corrected. Still, almost all of their works seem to be from shows I haven't seen in a very long time or haven't seen at all, period. And given I had to struggle to recognize and remember what Dearka sounded like when he first appeared in Destiny Episode 5, there wasn't any way I was going to catch Brad Swaile also voicing Auel.

But I do still stand by my opinion that the dub in general has been unimpressive so far, that's for sure.

Well, I just picked their most reconizable works. Most people here have seen at least a couple episodes of Ranma or X-Men Evolution and practically everyone in this topic has seen Gundam Wing's dub (and the voices themselves haven't changed much since then).
