Simply stated, Sony's standalone Blu-Ray DVD player has been delayed from June 25th to "around August 15th". Also, Pioneer's Blu-Ray player has been delayed to "Fall 2006", citing a "delay in the development process".

Will Sony's Playstation 3, heavily dependent on Blu-Ray technology (the prime reason for it's high price, and the only format games will be released on), be delayed by these... um... delays... or will the PS3 still be on track for it's November launch date? Could faulty Blu-Ray technology be implemented to ensure it's launch date, leading to the similar lacking DVD player support found in PS2?

It's just strictly the players thoughs, it really said nothing about the actual system. It's pretty much apples and oranges considering that they're different branches of the company.

besides even if a delay rears it's head it's not like the PS2 is going to be short of any new games, Rouge Galaxy and Final Fantasy 12 are coming down the pipes in the near future.

Depends on when they finalize it and being manufacturing the systems, which I would guess wouldn't be till after the first Blu-Ray players hit the market. I doubt a PS3 delay will occur.

Depends. On one hand, there's a lot more then a Blu-Ray player going on in the PS3, so all those componants have to work together. But on the other hand, the stand alone players are still coming out before the PS3, which means the PS3 has plenty of time to still hammer out what's wrong with the stand alones.

Sony as a whole is relying on two things to keep them from outright going under: Blu-Ray and PlayStation3. That's why the two have been merged into one. It's not an apples-and-oranges comparison, since they're taking a huge risk with the PS3's price based solely on including Blu-Ray player functionality.
