With all the talk about the new Batwoman, and given that June is Gay Pride month, I was wondering what are some other gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, questioning, etc. characters in comics. Actually more specifically what are some of your favorites/least favorites and why. Not just asking about superhero comics here either. As I posted in the title there are spoilers possible so reader beware.

Here's one of mine:

Off Ramp and Frost Bite (Young Heroes in Love)
Although I didn't see it coming the first time I read the series, upon rereading there were subtle little hints there. The way that its hinted in YHIL 10,000,00 that they loved each other for some time and still do have some feelings for each other was wonderfully. (Though its not left in doubt that Frostbite did love Bonfire and that Off Ramp at one point cared for his ex-wife/girlfriend/baby's mama.) Oh who am I kidding that whole series was well done. I miss it so.

So anybody else care to share?

Some favorite gay/lesbian characters/comics of mine:

"Dykes to Watch Out For": biweekly comic strip about the lives of a bunch of mostly (but not all) lesbians, mixed with political commentary (on stuff like Iraq, etc.). Mo (the woman always in some sort of striped shirt) and her political rants (to the sometimes-annoyance of the other characters) are usually a hoot...

"Chelsea Boys": The lives of three gay male roommates in New York City. Somewhat "blue" humor at times (as a warning). (www.chelseaboys.com)

"A Couple of Guys": About a gay male couple in New York, and their various friends/family.

Lawrence in "For Better or For Worse" (as the first openly gay comic strip character I'd seen, in high school...)

Mark Slackmeyer in "Doonesbury"

Ahh yes Dykes to Watch Out For is great and I find the characters and their trials and tribulations are rather realistic. As for the rest none of the alternative papers in my area carry them anymore, although Chelsea boys may have been put on hold as I heard it was being adapted into an animated series for Logo. Oh my other favorite pair of LGBTQ characters

Mystique and Destiny (X-Men)
Say what you will its pretty much undeniable that Mystique and Destiny were lovers and loving parents who raised Rogue together. When Destiny died Mystique's mourning was more for that of a lover and not a very close friend. Although I believe Destiny has been forgotten by most, I found it rather interesting that she was included in the X-Men Evo universe once again partnered, although I doubt in the same way, with Mystique.

Hmmmm.... it's about time a thread like this gets made. Kudos IDistractedYou!

Apollo and Midnighter from The Authority: These were the first openly gay male comic book characters that I'd seen in comics and I was/am pleased to see them portrayed and treated as a regular loving couple. I other there relationship. It's so real and intimate and I love reading their experiences when it comes to raising Jenny.

Hulking and Wiccan from Young Avengers: Again, there are not your sterotypical gay couple or characters {:cough:Jack McFarlene:cough:} and they have real personas that any person can relate too.

Holly Robinson from Catwoman: I may not be sold on the fact that she's a good replacement Catwoman but I adored her as the good friend and supporting regular in the series.

Hero Cruz from The Titans (90s run): Glad to see a positive gay black male character without them being from OZ or on the "DL".

Honorables: Willow & Tara from BtVS Comics, Ultimate Colossus, Ultimate Northstar (he's more spunky in that verse), Renee Montoya, Mystique, and Union Jack II.

I second "Chelsea's Boys" and Mark from "Doonesbury" also.

I'd feel guilty if I didn't mention Judd Winick.

That is to say, his use of homosexual characters. I guess Pedro and Me doesn't count because that was real, but then there's Terry Berg, the supporting character back when Winick was writing Green Lantern.

Sure, Winick is really preachy, but he fleshed Terry out and made him a good character.

Wiccian and Hulking are great. I totally dig them as characters. I mean they're just a couple of superpowered kids in love, what could be better than that?

Ulitmate Colossus is also awesome. I loved how he's a really developed character, and being gay is really second to everything else. He's not the gay guy on the team, he's just Colossus.

Exiles' Sunfire. Morph hit on her for several issues before she finally told him. Her relationship with an alternate Spider-Woman was great, though.

Do webcomics count? Red Stephie of 'Crushed!', by Drake Fenwick, is a lesbian. Infact, one of the other lead characters, a curvey and scantily-clad mercenary by the name of May'une, was hired by Crushed to help reduce the party's death rate as well as to distract Red and keep the eccentric lezzy from hitting on her all the time :p May'une gets paid extra to keep her skimpy get-up...

Anyway, I'm affraid I don't actually read comic books so that's the only one that I know of ^^;

If we're counting webcomics, then I might as well mention half of the characters from El Goonish Shive.

The various homosexual characters in Sandman were all great, due to Gaiman's strengths in writing. In all honesty I don't read enough Vertigo/mature readers stuff to be able to list many other characters that haven't already been mentioned in this thread.

Whoops! Forgot to mention Moondragon who, during Peter David's Captain Marvel series, dated Marlo Chandler and then Phyla (Captain Marvel's sister).

Josiah Power from The Power Company. A brilliant entrepeneur, a powerful meta... and oh yeah, he was gay. One of the best-portrayed characters I've ever seen.

I certainly have a soft spot for Wiccan and Hulking of "Young Avengers". They show more of a caring, concerned attitude and watch out for each other's well-being as well as stay close and talk rather than just "hormonal teenagers". And there's also Apollo and Midnighter of the Vertigo Wildstorm comics.

As for web-comics with gay characters or gay web-comics, here's a nice list of some rather deep and wonderful stories (I included links):

http://www.namirdeiter.com - "Namir Deiter". In this, Gabby is a lesbian and though it was recently revealed she had feelings for Tipper thanks to Falco's big mouth, she still remained friends with all of them.

http://www.carpediemcomic.com - A anthropomorphic-animal story of five guys, in which four are gay and one is usually mistaken as gay, much to his embarrassment and discomfort. :D

http://www.raccoony.com/closetcoon/ - a gay raccoon living out college life

http://www.liondogworks.com/fur-piled.html - "Fur Piled". Most of the characters here are gay, and yet they are quite well-rounded in that insanity sense.

http://www.theclassm.com/ - "The Class Menagerie", one of the most popular webcomics of all times, and one of the characters, Mikey, was gay and the strip "Duet To Me" in which he breaks the news to Lisa, a girl chasing him, is not only poignant but touching as well. And the author Vince Suzukawa created a second comic on sale called "I.S.O" in which it features a mostly gay-bisexual cast.

Jughead Jones from Archie. Heck, this guy hates girls. Read the double digest and the Americana series.

If I may paraphrase Chasing Amy.

Banky:
"Archie was not sleeping with Jughead!"

Black guy whose name escapes me at the moment:
"Of course he was. Why do you think Jughead was always wearing that little crown. He was queen of Archie's world."

I always liked mystique and destiny from Xmen , in the trivia on wikipedia it says mystique and destiny were gonna be the biological parents of nightcrawler by having mystique morph into a man for the conception but marvel thought that was going to far and didnt let the writers do that story.
Also as for webcomics ghastly ghastly comic has many gay characters.

Um.... the two are lovers. This has been confirmed in the comics, and its been implied since almost the beginning. Byrne and Claremont have also both (separately) mentioned the plot-line of Mystique and Destiny being Kurt's biological parents.

Not everything Wikipedia says is false.
