and die for just those reasons...IE the fact that it refuses to talk down to people, and isn't afraid to make it's audience use their cognitive abilites?

Now you have to admit that Babylon 5 had a real good run. I think the fans of that show really came thru to keep that show on the air.

It was never intelligent, well written or crafted! It had too much say from the executives!

I'd say the X-Files is intelligent, well written, crafted, and dosnt talk down to people and it's been very successful. Even now, when it's not as good as it used to be, it's still more intelligent than 95% of the shows out there. Of course, TXF is a rarety.

happens way too many times for me to count really..as an example, i'd go with one of my personal favs, which i have to now visit in the tv graveyard...freaks and geeks was one of the most intelligent, well written and well crafted shows out there..after the ax though, the creators were forced to produce the watered down, tv friendly version of it-fox's "undeclared." :(

Brimstone was probably one of my favorite shows while it aired. I still wish there was more.

Gargoyles didn't die because it was intelligent, well written and crafted..... it died because it got dumbed down and poorly written in its last season.

The first 2 seasons rarely beat Power Rangers in the ratings, despite a sizeable push that got workers on other DA shows jealous. Why a season 3? Only because ABC needed a boys action show with a marquee/somewhat known name, preferably (I assume) one that didn't need to get secured- just made, the quicker the better.

Which was without warning pulled for the UPN neo-blaxploitation lineup. Maybe I should hunt up a N.M. avvy....

Babylon 5 ended because the story demanded that it ended. It was not cancelled.
Crusade, on the other hand, was cancelled, and for no good reason.

Incredible writing able to combine the natural comedic abilities of the actors with the drama and sorrow of war. It's messages soon got to be a bit too heavy handed (and dated in some cases) for viewers. It had a good run, though.

MASH is a great series. Are you picking up the DVD sets, Kal-El?
I also think St Elsewhere was a great and intelligent show that was underrated in its time, and perhaps still is as ER's success has eclipsed St Elsewhere, but if it wasn't for St Elsewhere, there would have been no ER.

Definitely picking up the DVD sets Cal. Both the series and the movie DVDs. I'm very excited about those. They have good extras too.
I also agree with you about St. Elsewhere. ER would not be if it wasn't for this show. I used to love the theme music (also similar in principle to the ER theme).

To throw up a another series or two,
Batman Beyond suffered from the same neglect, especially with those Zeta crossovers.
The original Beast Wars, not Machines, Wars, suffered too from the need to "kiddify" the story after the first set of bot makeovers.

Well said, though in the case of Beast Machines, it tried to be TOO serious for its own good, mixing *WAY TOO MUCH*philosophical innuendos where philosophical innuendoes wasn't really that needed.
The butt-ugly character designs didn't help much either (I'm thinking Rattrap and Blacharachnia, of course. Oh...and NIGHTSCREAM    ).
