£425 is still a heck of a lot (heck, it's more than what we'd get if we imported a US PS3). The X360 was £200 and £270 for Core and Premium, and if Sony aren't even going to release the standard edition over here, then these will NOT be selling like hotcakes come opening day, I can tell you that!

It will still sell like hotcakes anyway. Remember the kind of prices people were paying for the PS2 at lanuch? While that kind of over pricing won't last (jut while it's barnd new), there are probably enough PSX fanboys who will cough it up none the less.

So, with average conversion rates, that translates to about $800 U.S. dollars?

$783 is closer, but only in a pendant's way.
Pretty much what I expected.

£15/$30 off anyhow. I figured it would be a little more as the UK prices are relatively more expensive beyond the conversion rate.
Makes for pricey living but great holidays abroad.

So, with average conversion rates, that translates to about $800 U.S. dollars?$797.43, which you can round to $799.99, so yeah!

The PS2 at launch was £300 (about $550 at today's exchange rate, but less back in the day), more than a hundred pounds cheaper. And, I admit, fanboys will be waiting in line - guaranteed. What I mean, however, is the average joe who's definitely not going to have the money to buy this. They probably will all be sold out by Christmas, but not before the start of December at that price.
No way I'm paying that for a PS3. I imagine there going to get cheaper rather quickly, once they've got thier cream market, no doubt they'll drop. Given how overpriced the X-Box was over here and how it utterly died on it's ass on it's launch date, I'd expect Sony to make it a hell of a lot cheaper very, very quickly.

Lets see, I can remorgage my house for a games console which, beyond the next FF and MGS games, will have nothing but 3rd rate games that will more than likely have "Fifa" in their name somewhere.
Or I can get a Wii for about a 4th of the price.
Oh, this is such a conundrum (!).

Never buy a system right away, the first models are always way too expensive and have tons of bugs in them. Wait about 6 months or so, the price will go down and the bugs will be corrected.

And, dare I spread the radish of controversy, where other companies have to swing at the bat at least 3 times before they get it right, Nintendo get it right first time.

You got lucky, but we are not talking about Nintendo, we are talking about Sony and when the PS2 was first released it had a weak optical drive which caused problems down the road.
The smart thing to do is to wait 6 months or so before buying a systerm, just in case there are some bugs in the first models, plus they always become cheaper after a few months.

So, when you say "buy a new system", you mean "buy a new Sony system", as Nintendo's Quality Control is revered.

It's an utterly disgusting price to pay for a games console. The bulk of what your money goes toward funding is the Blu-Ray module and the so-called "Super Processor" which in my eyes are completely unnecessary. I personally prefer the XBOX360 and it's use of the much more versatile HD-DVD's and it's already more than adequate but not too pricey processor. Not that I'm a fan of Microsoft mind you...
