Toon Zone is considering making a "Top Ten Cartoon Series" of all time. The spotlight is on original (not compilation) animated television series pitched at any audience: adult, teen, children; prime time, afternoon, or Saturday morning; from the 1950s to today's toons.
Right now we are in the primitive stages of nominations. Nominations for best cartoon shorts on the Termite Terrace, and best cartoon series on Anigen.
Here is what you do: post your nomination with a little blurb.
Example:
Rude Dog
This white dog has attitude, a RUDE attitude. Rude Dog drives a car, picks up chicks, and hangs out with his posse. His show is the best cartoon series ever!
Please! Do NOT flame someone for their personal opinion. Thanks!
Be sure to visit the sister thread on the Termite Terrace Trading Post: The "Top Ten Cartoon Shorts" (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16675) where you can nominate and discuss your favorite individual cartoon short.

Gets my vote for this nomination:
UnderGRADS:
It's one of the most series where the events of this show was the very events of the life after the school of the creator of this series, Pete Williams. :bosko: :bosko:

"The Simpsons"
Excellent show! Who knew that Matt Groening's 2 minute shorts would soon turn out to be one of the best (and longest-running) animated series. The last few episodes weren't that great though. But, still Simpsons is THE BEST!

Batman, and the Simpsons are definately on top in the Best cartoon category. Honerable mention should go to DuckTales. This was the show that raised the bar for animated adventures in an age of Care Bares, and He-Man.

Gargoyles:
A show in the vein of Batman: The Animated Series (dark and brooding) that combined elements of legends from all over the world most notably from Shakespeare and Native American history. In summary: the story of a surviving clan of Gargoyles, betrayed by the humans they protected, cast into an enchanted sleep only to awake in the mid 1990's, and now trying to survive in a new world not sure who to trust.
The best (and only serious) animated series Disney has produced to date.

Freakazoid!
Funniest show i've ever seen. Likable characters, humorous situations, a little bit of adult humor, and best of all, a fan boy can easily relate to this show!

Spongebob Squarepants
This Sponge has it all: friends, a pet snail, and Krabby Pattys. He has so many funny adventures with many members of his town Bikini Bottom. Patrick Star (:D) joins Spongebob for hillarious stories to show. The best thing about this show, is that it has comedy that almost everyone will enjoy.

I second on the Powepuff Girls! :D It has comedy, action, and it doesn't need high-quality art to get people to watch it!

No...you don't. ;)
This is what happens when marketing directors have a little too much to drink and think they can make cartoons. Rude Dog is the show that inspired the Poochi episode of The Simpsons. The reason I used it as an example is I didn't want people to be influenced by the first pick in the thread.

Only one?! Well, this is tough cause I'm a HUGE B:TAS/TNBA fan, but I have to say....
Daria:
One of the, if not the, smartest animated shows ever. Sarcasm at it's best, and it helped me get through those hideous high school years. Added Trent Lane was my pen name/ alter ego for a while to, so I've got some big connections to the show :D

I would have to say Batman the Animated series. It's one of the best animated tv series of all time. It showed that cartoons can even appeal to adults as well as kids. I would say Justice League but not too many people know of it yet.

I'm going to have to say Animaniacs.
This show has been my favorite since I was a little kid. I've never understood all the celebrity humor til I got older. The fact that it still manages to appeal to children and older viewers is what makes Animaniacs a classic.

I so agree w/ you! This was the 1st show I ever obcessed about! I think Gargoyles was better than B:TAS! That's just my opinion, please, no one get mad at me for it.
It's also one of the few shows that delt w/ serious issues w/o being preachy. (Remember the episode when Broadway acciendently shot Elisa?)

Batman The Animated Series/The New Batman Adventures
BTAS truely reinvented the Dark Knight and sparked even more interest in the Caped Crusader after the release of the two movies. It gave some villains such as Two-Face their first inception outside of the comic books and introduced Harley Quinn into the Batman Universe.
So there's my 2 or maybe even 3 cents :D

Tiny Toons!
It paved the way and opened the door for the Silver Age of WB Animation... if it weren't for Tiny Toons, there'd be no Animaniacs, no Pinky & the Brain, etc! It had fun, likeable characters, as well as humor that worked on so many different levels.

Battle Of The Planets!
A cartoon the slightly older toonsters may remember!
The music and sound of the cartoon haunted me for 15 years after I saw it! I managed to see it for the first time again a couple of years ago and have been hooked since!
Cool action, nice dialogue, cool ships, the most AMAZING soundtracks and wicked weapons.
There are some downsides to the cartoon, but I'm hardly going to tell you them while I attempt to nominate it!

Robotech
This saga combining three different series into a rather seamless 3 generation action drama was one of the original Japanese style animations to make it in the US. A show thoughtfully combining great action with some suprisingly adult drama makes this show stand out among it early peers.
...I just love this show!

1. You can bring up and nominate as many animated TV series as you like.
2. The purpose of this thread is not to make nominations as such, but to stir up memories of shows. When it comes time to actually construct a list we want to make sure we don't forget some obvious worthies.

The Bullwinkle Show: Brought smart, roguish satire to TV animation and pitched it at kids, amazingly enough.

Trigun
A Sci-Fi Western about Vash the Stampede, the greatest gunfighter in the galaxy- who also happens to be a donut-loving goofball pacifist - and the two insurance girls sent to keep him out of trouble and costly property damage. It's fun, it's cool, and it really has something to say. And any show where a wandering preacher gets to carry around a bazooka in the shape of a giant cross DESERVES recognition! :D
The Dork Knight

As for a second choice....
I vote for.....
Celebrity Deathmatch
This show is one of the best! I've always wanted to see NSYNC and Backstreet fight to te death! I've always wanted to see Britney and Christina get into a popstar cat fight! Great stuff!

My vote have to go to.....
South Park : Follow 4 boys around a carzy mountain town Colorado, most of the time they makes fun of recent stuff for example last year Season 4 episode invole making fun of the 2000 President election. I always been a fan of the show since i seen it late 1997.

Superman
Batman's creative team had a harder time with this show, since they needed to redesign Superman, Lois, Clark, his enemies, and Metropolis virtually from scratch. It removed the goofy 60's stuff--multi-colored kryptonite, Turtle Boy, Lois and Lana fighting over Superman, the bottle city of Kandor--from the formula and reminded us why the Man of Steel was an icon in the first place. It's highly underrated compared to BTAS, Batman Beyond, and the Justice League.

My second vote have to go to the show that got me into like animation so much.

ThunderCats
This wonderful '80s cartoon is an eclectic blend of sword and sorcery, sci-fi, comedy, drama, action, horror and adventure, all seamlessly sutured into a post-apocalyptic alternate Earth setting, where feline superheroes must battle for survival against an ever-increasing miasma of miscreants and villains. Colourful fun, covering various topics, with a nice blend of generally good writing, voice acting and animation, with just the right amount of kitsch and camp to make you all warm and nummy inside. :)

I know it's a new one but I love it!
Samurai Jack
A well trained, Japanese Samurai sent to kill a demon named Aku, is sent to the far future, a future his world will have, if Aku is not stopped. In his quest he will have to get used to new technology and different creatures, on his way to get back home. He is a wanted man always traveling to help beings in need and to destroy the influences of Aku.
I nominate this show.

01-12-2002, 07:45 PM
the original Transformers for starting a legend, and Transformers Beast Wars for creating a great story from the legend, giving it more depth and personable characters.
I could also nominated Dragonball and it's sequel, DBZ, but I'd probably get crucified.
Along the lines of Disney, I'd like to add in Ducktales and Darwing Duck.

I have four more nominations that nobody has mentioned before:
The Bugs Bunny Show: WB's first animated television show and it's also the first prime time animated show.
Tom Terrific: Created, by Gene Deitch, this stylized UPA-like cartoon character and his dog Mighty Manfred were shown as part of "The Captain Kangaroo Show" made in the 50s.
The Flintstones: The of the BEST animated Hanna-Barbera shows. The second prime-time animated television show!
The Ren and Stimpy Show: One of Nickelodeon's best (and gross) Nicktoons ever made! EXCELLENT!

My 3rd vote have to go to....
Rocko's Modern Life : There is alot of funny cherecters on this show. But my fave Cheracters are Filbert, and Heffer. Because of the episode when Filbert and Heffer disguse themselves as Mr.Bighead was funny as heck and I love this phase they kept saying "Weewee!". I just love this show as much as any other series. :)

How can there even be a discussion??? Hands Down Batman:TAS with Batman Beyond a distant runner-up with Superman: TAS. The show was ART ...plain and simple. Strong writing, excellent characters and eye-popping animation cemented the Dark Knight as the hero of our time. Dark, brooding ...yet full of hope. However......there is not one cartoon series listed yet so far that doesn't have a strong argument going for it, but Batman: TAS was something special and is hands down the best animated series of our generation.

As if it needs be said, Batman: The Animated Series. Possibly the best invocation of the Batman, definitely including the movies, and maybe even including the comics, themselves.
Superman: The Animated Series. The conflicts with Darkseid in this series are the stuff legends are made of.
Transformers ( original series ).
GIJoe ( original series )

Cowboy Bebop
Unlike most shows, it maintains a very high degree of quality across the board. The music and animation never fail to impress and are always top notch. There's never a moment when one could say that "it could have been better here or there". The character designs are fantastic and the voice acting, especially the English dub are the best in the business. And, of course, the storytelling is both fresh and mature, but accessible to just about anyone.
Close runner ups would be Batman: The Animated Series in all of it's incarnations, The Simpsons, Samurai Jack, Big O, and Thundercats.

This was the first of its kind, a cartoon that showed us the Dark Knight in the way he was always meant to be: Dark, Deadly, and Kickin Butt! Solvin Crimes and Takin names, Batman is the best.

'The Simpsons'- a ground-breaker. At it's best, it had funnier scripts than any live-action sitcom around.
'Pinky and the Brain'- good writing & good character interaction, w/ just enough sentiment to give the show a real heart.
'The Powerpuff Girls'- I like the balance of tongue-in-cheek and Cute qualities. Mojo Jojo is my all-time favorite cartoon villain; I know no other who can be so evil *and* so hilarious.
Best candidate for future nomination: 'Samurai Jack'- so far it's featured excellent animation, varied stories, and a wonderfully subtle soundtrack. Let's just see if they can keep it up.

One of my top ten has to be...
Powerpuff Girls! A great show. One of the wittiest and clever shows of the past ten years.
Men in Black:
MIB was an awesome comedy/sci-fi that aired for 4 years (impressive for a spin off) and will continue again in the fall of 2002. It was always creative, and followed our favorite agents--Kay, Jay, Elle, Zed, and later on, brought in it's own Agent X. It was hip and cool and jam-packed with humor, aliens, and the coolest technology this side of Jupiter. The show combined elements of the blockbuster movie with the dark and mysterious comic book series and always had us wanting more. The MIB were made to be a cartoon and the cartoon was made superbly. The show itself was always sharp and fresh looking and it was a crisp addition to the world of cartoons. Jokes were witty, plots were creative and interesting. A key point I'll make is Agent Elle. She was so awesome! Agent Elle gave girls someone to admire in a world of guys in black suits. She was smart, and always had a sharp come-back and an attitude we loved to tune in to. Never afraid to take charge, or drive whether it be an LTD, an SUV or a hoverbike (Jay never got to drive anywhere near as much!), Elle made the show so much more enjoyable-- and I LOVE that hairstyle! The whole show was just magic. In it's 4th season, the familiar lineup was altered with the wonderful additions of the bold and brash Agent X and scientific mayhem of Dr. Zeeltor, who brought so much more technology to this planet and made us fear sticky-pad paper.
Truly, MIB the animated Series showed us that Nothing Is What it Seems.

Exo Squad - Probably one of the best action animation series to ever come out of the U.S. It has good animation and excellent writing. It has been compared to Babylon 5 in that the individual episodes build one another to achieve a very good story.
The basic premise of the series is that the Neo Sapiens, genetically created beings that are used as labor, have rebelled against the human population. Their leader, Phaeton, is out to enslave or destroy all the humans in the planetary system. The Exo Fleet, the human's space fleet, has been pushed all the way back to the edge of the system and must fight their way back to save the human race.

this show was GREAT! I woulda voted for Batman TAS...but I'm sure it will win anyways so I voted Rocko :p
The Clown Prince
01-13-2002, 02:47 AM
Holy crap! Do you have to ask? He-Man and the Masters of the Universe !
Probably one of if not THE most memorable cartoon of the 80's. Mattel's billion dollar muscle man was brought to life by Lou Scheimer and Filmation. He-Man had/has characters good and bad so bright, colorful, and memorable, and a sentence spoken over and over again by children from all over, "By the power of Grayskull, I have the Power!!!" He-Man most definately derseves a place in the top 10 best cartoon series of all time.
He-Man being as popular and a big of an icon as he is, will return this summer with an all new series.

Is there really a Top ten? Man, I think I can name a ton of toons I've watched as a kid and loved, so I think its kinda difficult to choose which is tops, they all helped provide me with knowledge about life. REn & Stimpy are tops in my book, cause I think the humor was just soo wacked, man I love it.
Anyways, I hope the following also get consideration or menton:
Thundercats, Thundar the Barbarian, Jayce & the Wheeled Warriors, Mask, Blackstar, Gi Joe, Transformers, Mighty Orbots, Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, Pac Man, Visionaries, Jem, Inhumanoids, Scooby Doo, Cow & Chicken, Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, Superfiriends, Battle of the Planets, The Humanoids, Space Ghost, Plastic Man, Smurfs, Snorks, Johhnny Quest, etc.
Geez, ya know, I think there should be a survey on the top 50 most remembered toons. I know more, but I just can't think of all of them right now. I think it'd be interesting, what do you think?

I know, I know it was canceled after two episodes...but I have the animated video, and it's so friggin brilliant! Each episode is hilarious, and Brian O' Hallorian and Jeff Anderson do the voices for Dante and Randal, like in the actual movie...so it feels like you're actually watching Clerks...minus the extreme use of "the f-word" ;)

Here are all time favorites.
Looney Tunes
(Stood the test of time. Making them some of the best cartoons around.)
Tom & Jerry
(This is where the famous cartoon dou, William Hanna, and Joseph Barbera got their start. Winning 7 out of 12 Oscar nominations for nearly two decades worth of cartoons, their cat & mouse team are a classic.)
Tex Avery Cartoons
(Made cartoons wilder, and edgier)
The Flintstones
(The first long running prime time cartoon.)
Bullwinkle
(Brought sharp writing, and creative satire to animation)
He-Man
(This is the show that started the syndication trend in the 80's Plus, it was Filmation's best show at the time. This show had all kinds of great heroes, and villians. He-Man fought all kinds of evil, and protected Eternia from Skeletor, and his minions with flying colors, And you can't go wrong with the comic relife of Orko! Truly an 80's comic genius! This show also featured the talents of future Batman writer/producer team Paul Dini, and Bruce Timm. How's that for cool?! 'I have the Power!)
She-Ra
(Sh-Ra is a true icon of girl power in the 80's. He-Man descovers his long lost stster, who worked for the Horde, and brought her to the side of good. this show had everything that made He-man great. She-Ra was just as strong as He-Man, and her sword can transform into many things. Plus, Hordaks empire was an even bigger threat than Skeletor ever was to He-Man. So she had her hands full with the Horde. This show appealed to both genders. Boys fell in love with her, and girls wanted to be like her. She-Ra definitely ranks up there with Wonder Woman, and she also paved the way for The Powerpuff Girls.)
Transformers
(This show started a legend that's truly more than meats the eye. Optimus Prime's curage, and leadership helped define the autobots, in their battle against the Decepticons. Megatron was the best villian of the show. With Starscream always sceaming to overthrow him. Everyone has a favorite Transformer. be it autobot, or decepticon. The show has also spawned a great movie that has become a cult classic. As well as the spinoff series Beast Wars. The ledgend will live on, Till all are one!)
The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse
(Ralph Bakshi's version broke through the cookie cutter cartoon mold at the time, Plus it introduced us to John K.)
DuckTales
(Disney's first syndicated foray proved high end adventure, quality animation, and wonderful storytelling can co-exist in a world of Care Bears, and He-Man)
Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers
(Same as DuckTales)
The Simpsons
(This is it! The show that brought animation back to prime time, which has been absent since The Flintstones ended it's six year run, and since then was filled with animated specials, holiday, or otherwise. Not only did it prove that an animated sitcom can work again, but it had staying power. making it the longest running animated sitcom in history! Surpassing The Flintstones. It also paved the way for King of The Hill, Futurama, and Family Guy! The Simpsons may be losing some steam as of late, but it's still the best animated show! period!)
Tiny Toon Adventures
(This is the show that started the silver age of Warner Bros. TV animation. bringing the WB. style of cartoon comedy to the modern age. It also paved the way for Tazmania, Animaniacs, and Frakazoid.)
Tazmania
(This is one of the more underrated WB shows from the silver age, but it's a good show for the Tazmanian Devil. It has clever stories, and fun characters that are worthy of the WB tradition. like Digery Dingo, Bull and Axel Gator, and The Platepuss Brothers. Taz's family members are just as fun. His dad with the Bing Crosby accent is just pricless. Plus there are some guest appearances by some old favorites like Foghorn Leghorn, and Marvin Martian.
Truly a fun show.)
Ren & Stimpy
(The show that paved the way for extreme cartoon comedy, and gross out humor. Unfortunately, Nickelodeon found John K's creation to be too boarderline. resulting in his firing. It may have been a sad event for it's fans, but Ren & Stimpy will be remembered for reviving the dead art of funny cartoons.)
Batman:TAS
(This is the one that started the action cartoon renissance of the early 90's. Giving us the most faithful inturpretation of Batman ever. With beautiful animation, and dark, inteligent writing, this show also proved that superhero cartoons can appeal to both kids, and adults.)
Animaniacs
(Like Tiny Toons. this show works on so many levels. with humor for the kids, and inside jokes for the adults. Nick may have ruined the show's opening, but Animaniacs is still one of the best silver age WB cartoons around.)
Gargoyles
(Disney's first, and only, cutting edge action cartoon series. This show would've never existed if it wern't for Batman.)
2 Stupid Dogs
(A good "Ren & Stimpy" like show that works on it's own terms. Genndy Tartakovski, and Craig McKracken worked on that show as well.)
Freakazoid
(This is truly a show for fanboys! Highly underrated, but still a great show!)
Superman:TAS
(The tradition of high quality started by Batman continues with Superman. Despite the fact that it's highly underrated, it' one of the best Superman toons around)
Dexter's Laboratory
(Genndy Tartakovski has given us a wonderful cartoon about the life of a boy genius, and his bothersome sister. loaded with clever stories, and pop culture references. Dexter dosen't disapoint. The show also has wonderful side cartoons like Justice Friends, and Dial 'M' for Monkey. adding some veriaty to an already great cartoon. Long live Dexter!)
Powerpuff Girls
(Wild, action packed, violent, jokey, and all aroud cute cartoon! With a briliant mixture of anime cliches, and a retro 60's look, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup earn high marks. The show also has a wonderul line up of wacky villians like Fuzzy Lumpkis, The Gangreen Gang, and Him. The best villian, however is Mojo Jojo. Never has a villian been so evil, and so funny! Except maybe the Joker. The cartoon world is saved! Thanks to the Powerpuff Girls!)
Batman Beyond
(An excellent, and logical contiuation of the Batman legacy. Terry McGinnus is truly worthy of wearing the cowl.)
Samurai Jack
(Dexter creator Genndy Tartakovski takes his hybrid style of action, and comedy even further with Samurai Jack! This show has alot going for it. Stylized storytelling using very little dialog, a retro 50's look with no character outlines, and upbeat catchy techno music! Who knows if Jack will finally destroy Aku, and return to his own time? Follow the legend!)
Justice Leauge
(Warner Bros. Animation dose it again with Justice Leauge. It's more action oriented this time around, but the magic is still there.)
Honerable mentions:
Scooby-Doo Where Are You?
Top Cat
The Jetsons
G. I. Joe
Heathcliff
Bionic Six
TaleSpin
Darkwing Duck
Goof Troop
Bonkers
Swat Kats
Cow & Chicken
Johnny Bravo
I Am Weasle
Futurama
Family Guy
One side note. I'd give the newer shows a few more years just to see if they can age well. The older shows definately deserve the nominations, but who knows how the more recent stuff will be treated in the years to come. Still, I wanted a mixture of old, and new shows to balance it out.

Look, everyone had better just calm down. There is no good reason for people to start yelling here.
The purpose of this thread is just to remind people of what good series there were out there, and why they were good. There is nothing wrong with lists as such. But it is better to have a short number of good series, and talk briefly about why they were good, than to just list a bunch of favorites.
Remember, the goal here is to help construct a list of "Top 10 Cartoon Series." That means, realistically, that there should be no more than 10 series on your "list." (You can't put 43 series on a Top 10 list, guys!) And if you want people to recognize your nominees as worthy candidates for a Top 10 list, you'd better give reasons for them.

I already posted this before. But I will explain it again.
I told everyone who had huge lists that you are going to have to explain why it is great are it is going to get deleted. This thread is going to be up till Friday and it is going to be hard to sift through if it if it is 100 pages long.
So please, anyone with lists go back and edit your posts and put explainations of why you like them.

Alright...I'm gonna nominate a couple more
SOUTH PARK: This show is just so offensive...but it's always friggin hilarious. The creator's aren't afraid to crack jokes at anyone!
BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD: MTV (or should I say "The Real World Network...) has went to hell since they left. This has to be the funniest toon I've ever seen (save Clerks).
BATMAN: TAS: This one has to be in the Top Ten, of course! It paved the way for Superman: TAS, Batman Beyond, and Justice League...no more dorky kid's stuff like seen on Super Friends!
That's it...don't wanna plague you with a huge list like others have :D

well, im sure plenty of these have already been said, but i'll give it a shot...
series...
Batman: the animated series/tnba:
this series redefined american animation and action/adventure cartoon, and is the best cartoon series of all time, imo. and i kind of consider tnba as the same series, in a way, so im counting them together.
the simpsons:
dispite its crappy last couple of seasons, this show is definately one of the greatest cartoons of all time.
superman: the animated series:
this show reinvented the superman universe and made it more interesting than any superman incarnation.
ren and stimpy:
this is by far a landmark in cartoon history. not only was it as funny as hell, but it started the whole 50s cartoon parody and gross out animation that so many other shows have borrowed since, and is just a great american cartoon.
neon genesis evangelion:
come on, do i even have to sell this one? its anime at its best.
gundam wing:
anime at its best as well. great characters, music, plots, philosopy, it has it all.
garfield and friends:
another great american cartoon, worthy of the comic strip.
duck tales, chip and dales rescue rangers, and darkwing duck:
i'll just lump these all togther since they are all from the disney afternoon. each series was great and very imaginative and fun to watch. id include gargoyles, but because of its downward spiral shortly after the second season started, i must exclude it.
denis the menace:
i truely loved this show, it was great.
cartoon shorts:
One froggy night:
im not sure if thats the actual title, but its the looney toons cartoon w/ michigan j frog's debut.
also, the looney toons cartoon w/ the family that has a baby that turns out to be an alien named zot. that was a classic and one of the best looney toons ever. the title escapes me at the moment.
there are so many to choose from, but thats what i came up with right now. peace.

DerekPowers, those shorts are "One Froggy Evening" and "Rocket-Bye Baby". All cartoon shorts should be nominated at the Terrmite Terrace:The "Top Ten Cartoon Shorts" (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16675)

Here's what I think the top cartoons of all time are (in no particular order):
-Gargoyles (NOT the goliath chronicles)
A very intelligent cartoon that mentioned worldwide mythology, history and literature. I rarely seen shakespeare references in "adult" shows, let alone cartoons.
-Batman the Animated Series
This show was animated beautifully and had very many clever aspects as well. Like someone said, it paved the way for future batman series.
-The Mysterious Cities of Gold
One of the earliest cartoons in my memory, this cartoon was intelligent and much like Gargoyles used mythology and history in its storyline.
-Gundam Wing
Before seeing this I had thought Gargoyles was the last of the great cartoons made. This cartoon was intelligent and included such themes as terrorism, political intrigue, and pacifism vs. fighting to reach your goals. This was also drawn beautifully and has paved the way for other gundam series to come into the U.S.
-The Simpsons
This cartoon is one of the longest running cartoon series ever and consistently makes fun of everything and everyone. Enjoyed by adults and children alike. It is intelligent and clever.
-Daria
The Simpsons poked fun at society in general, Daria intelligently poked fun at societies influence on the teenagers and the societies that teenagers have created among themselves in their schools. Unlike other MTV cartoons, this was a show for the outcasts.
-DragonballZ
I count Dragonball and DragonballZ together since they are pretty much the same storyline. This cartoon is funny, imaginative, and is enjoyed by kids and adults.
-Pokemon
Yes, many adults hate this cartoon, but the fact is, it is a very intelligent cartoon in many ways. And because of this show and Gundam Wing, anime is being brought into the U.S. a lot more than ever before.

A few more nobody's mentioned yet.
Aeon Flux
Very adult and nontraditional in both its structure and stories, dealing with topics such as religion and love according to it own rules. Or lack thereof. In the simplest of terms, it's about a man and a woman eternally battling each other in a bizarre future world. They're attracted to each other, but too fundamentally different to be anything but the other's doom, so they settle for being enemies. The main characters can wind up dead at the end of each episode, and multiple viewings are often neccessary to unravel the intricate plots. And if the series' dialogue doesn't reel you in, the wardrobe will.
Revolutionary Girl Utena
It looks like a girly cartoon. It sounds like a girly cartoon. But underneath the roses and the bishounen, Utena is about a heck of a lot more than romance. In addition to tackling tricky subjects like gender roles and self-delusion, the show also takes a great advantage of its repetitive nature. Neatly worked into the standard tournament-battle-format are stories about each of the duelists and the illusions they all hide behind, including Utena. And just as you think you've got all the characters figured out, the series'll let you take a look at them from a different angle and the whole picture changes. Add a shadow-girl Greek chorus, cheerfully deranged music, and enough ambiguouly symbolic imagery to give Freud an aneurysm, and you've got the hands-down best "girls" cartoon ever made.
And another vote to NGE, for intelligence and guts and Asuka.

Tiny Toon Adventures: Paved the way for the WB to make a bunch of new stuff, that most of us regard as classic Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Pinky and the Brain.
Astro Boy: Osamu Tezuka's idea, pioneered anime as we know it, need I say more.
MSG: This show created the giant robot genre as we know it, and besides that it helped push animation to the level of sophistication it currently enjoys in Japan.
The Simpsons: Animated Sitcom that revitalized the genre, and made Matt Groeeing (spelling.)
BTAS: Pure art, that thing was just an incredible show that wasn't afraid to be dark and griddy when it wanted to be. And it aged well, I can still watch it without cringing (most of it.)
Oh and Finally one many of you missed, and I think deserves recognition.
THE WHAT A CARTOON SHOW: Okay 90% of it was garbage, 6% was average, but that last 4% was pure gold out of it came, Dexter, PPG, Jonny Bravo, and some others.
There a probably more but this is all I can think of now

She-Ra: Princess of Power
Originally intended to be nothing more than a female spin-off of the highly successful "Masters of the Universe" Filmation cartoon based on the Matell best-selling action figure line, this imaginative series was one of the first to promote a greatly respectable female super-hero as a role model, equal in all aspects to her male counterpart, and earn a widespread fan base among children and grown-up alike. Dealing with topics such as oppression, justice, friendship, truth and love, this series helped teach children to be the best people they could be, all the while providing appropriate entertainment in an inspiring and visually brilliant package. Truely, this is one of the greatest animated series in the history of television!

Garfield & Friends - This was a cartoon I consistently enjoyed when I was younger, it had the same humor as the newspaper strip did and each of the characters voice actors were perfect.
Darkwing Duck - Another big cartoon when I was younger. I had already been into comics and superheroes for a while and when this came along it just fit right in. The first story arc was almost movie-like.
the original Transformers - My first obsession as a child, need I say more?
Batman: TAS - Dark, very well written, and stuck to the original story behind Batman. Each episode was original and not really based on a comic story.
Tenchi Muyo &/or Universe - One of the most accessible anime series for a new person to get into. I'm a huge anime fan and tell anyone who wants to get into the genre to start with this.
90s Spider-man - The best Spider-man cartoon to date. The stories were great, most based off a comic story, but still put on the screen very well. The voice actors were great and c'mon, it had Mark Hamil as the Hobgoblin! He really showed what he could do as the Joker and here he does even better.
early 90s X-Men - Easily one of my favorite cartoons ever. It too pulled stories from the comics and put them on the screen. I had been an X-Men fan a long time before this came on and naturally I liked it. It too had voice actors who matched the characters, Wolverine, Beast, and Rogue especially...
BTW - I did not post my reasonings earlier because I did not have the time, I just wanted to get my list down while I was thinking of it.

Tenchi Muyo (also Universe and Shin) - An excellent anime with beautiful animation (except Shin), entertaining stories and a fine cast of characters. I recommend the dubbed version.
Daria - A very smart, well-written program (and given its network of origin, that's truly noteworthy).
Tiny Toon Adventures - Not only the dawn of WB's Silver Age, but a pleasant throwback (of sorts) to the WB cartoons of old.
Dexter's Laboratory - An enjoyably nutty show about a boy and the creations from his lab.
Duckman - Hilariously abrasive and pointed (and that's just the title character).
Animaniacs - A terrific program that ably combined goofy humor with plenty of in-jokes.
The Angry Beavers - The silly, yet vastly enjoyable foibles of a pair of beaver brothers. Perhaps Nick's best animated show.
The Fairly Oddparents - A non-stop laugh fest.
Undergrads - As a college man, I can relate to some of the stuff on the show. Everything else I find is just darn hilarious.
Rocko's Modern Life - An enjoyably surreal little 'toon.
Downtown - A brilliantly animated and funny program from MTV.
Clerks: TAS - A great, off the wall spinoff of the film.
Baby Blues - I've never read the comic strip, but if it's anything like this terrific show, I'm really missing out.
Futurama - Matt Groening and company have brought us a fine bit of futuristic nonsense with this show. Why does Fox hate it so?
Garfield and Friends - A fine, funny cartoon that surpasses the comic strip (the current strip; it has seen better days). Also, quite frankly, Lorenzo Music (RIP) is Garfield.
Hey Arnold! - I find the exploits of do-gooder Arnold and the cast to be quite entertaining.
X-Men: Evolution - Not a favorite of most people, but I like this offshoot of the famous comic.
Note: I wanted to list my favorites, but then I see all these other lists, so that was out. I chose not just every cartoon that I even remotely liked; I picked shows that, if I missed an episode, I would die, even though most of them are in reruns. Let me tell you, it isn't easy to give reasons why you like something.

Daria
Daria approaches everythings with sacrasm. Daria has to deal with a superfical sister, an off father, and at time a dominating mother. Daria sees past all the phonies in the world

The funniest animated series ever. The Simpsons with zany cast of characters never disappoints. The Simpsons is longest is running animated series of all time. The Simpsons has been able to produce quality and quantity at the same time
Robotech
The first serialized cartoon. Robotech had kids running home to see the exploits of multi-generation cast of Robotech.
The Critic
Fat Film Critic Jay Sherman must deal with watching bad movies on a daily basis, a mother who is always embarrasing him, an ex wife who wants all of his money, and crazy father.
King of the Hill

his mother getting freaky on his kitchen table.
Batman the Animated Series
This series shows how batman is in the comic book. The cartoon is gritty with wonderful plots and great voice acting.
X-men
The early 90s cartoon introduced millions of fans to world the X-men. The X-men a group of mutants must fight prejudice and fear and try to fight for a peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans. Almost characters from the X-men mythos appears such as Magneto, Sabretooth, Psylocke, Apocaplyse and countless others.

Tiny Toon Adventures
The next generation of Looney Tunes which inspired future hits like Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. Smaller, teen age versions of your favorite Looney Tunes. What not to love about about Buster, Babs, Plucky Duck, and the rest of the gang.
Animaniacs
Two warners brothers and warner sister dot terrorized the Warner Studios. Animaniacs also feature Slappy Squirrel and nephew Skippy and Pinky and the Brain. Pinky and the Brian were so popular that Pinky and the Brain became a spin-off.

Actually, a reason for loving your mother would be that she raised you, was there for you, etc. Saying she was born in New York and is a female has nothing to do with that. A lot of people fit that description. I don't love my mother because she was born in Ohio, I love her for a million different reasons.
It's the difference between saying "My favorite cartoon series is Rocky and Bullwinkle because it has creative writing that both adults and children can enjoy. And that despite the very limited animation, they were able to give all of the characters unigue and individual personalities." and saying" I like Rocky and Bullwinkle because it was a TV show."
It's nice to know that someone thinks (insert show name here) is better than anything else ever done, but I really enjoy seeing what it is that that person enjoys about the show. Why do they like a show I hate, or what is their reason for loving the same show I love.

My votes would go to:
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
This was one of the most popular cartoon series in its time. Compared to cartoons now especially in the league of BTAS, I'll admit, is not as spectacular in animation and stories, but it is a gem nonetheless. He-Man's a great concept, had great characters, wonderful music, and there were good episodes that made the series so meaningful to me and to other people I'm sure. Definitely, if nothing else, He-Man's got the greatest transformation sequence ever. :D
She-Ra, Princess of Power
As a little girl, She-Ra was definitely a strong role model for me. The first animated strong woman that exploded on TV for me. What made it a plus was that she was He-Man's twin sister. ;) The series itself had a lot of potential. I loved the concept of He-Man having a long lost sister and that she was raised on the side of evil till he brought her over to the side of good. The world she lives in is the complete opposite of his world too, ruled by evil tyrants. It was just awesome, her task is in a way so much greater than He-Man's to overcome, and she is one woman having to fight alone sometimes too. :)
Animaniacs
Great shorts, great parodies, great songs, wonderful wonderful humor. This show was just fun and for all ages too. It has my vote for the funniest series ever. I just love it. :D
:yakko: :wakko: :dot:
I have a lot of other personal favorites (which have been spoken for very nicely btw) that I think are great series, but these three are the only ones I feel like speaking for right now. :)

Howdy. This is my first post, and I know a lot of folks are gonna rag on my choices, so I'm putting some explanations. Anyway, here's my list of best cartoons, first the top dozen & then honorable mentions:
1.) Jonny Quest (1960s): It was a precedent, the first American action cartoon. It's pretty un-PC & violent by today's standards, but it came first and for its time, that's not bad animation.
2.) The Simpsons (up till this god-awful season): It was the first animated sitcom truly aimed at adults to survive in prime time. It was brilliant till it started to deteriorate into Major-Social-Issue-And/Or-Guest-Star-of-the-Week Syndrome.
3.) Futurama: The overplayed Lucy Liu episode aside, this show is like Simpsons in the glory days. It has a lot of potential, more than King of the Hill, yet Fox feels compelled to kill it.
4.) The Critic: If this had a chance, this could also have survived; unfortunately, it didn't. It had great parodies and really did show how pointless celebrity culture is. Besides, you gotta love Franklin.
5.) Batman: The Animated Series/Superman/Batman Beyond: These really set the mold for action shows in the 90s. None of their contemporaries could hold a candle to them. Batman:TAS proved it didn't always need to have Batman the central focus; a personal favorite has always been "It's Never Too Late".
6.) The Tick: Superhero satire at its finest. Long live the Civic-Minded Five!
7.) Gargoyles: This was proof that Disney, if they wanted to, could do real action and not be cutesy or whore out its classic characters.
8.) Freakazoid!: Man, this died too young. It's probably the first Saturday AM show I've ever seen that succeeded in non sequitar.
9.) Animaniacs: The spiritual heir to the classic WB shorts. AND educational!
10) Just about everything Bob Clampett did for WB back in the day: He's just a personal favorite, especially for "Porky in Wackyland".
11.) Just about everything Tex Avery did for WB & MGM: Tex really set the standard for slapstick action in cartoons, as well as visual hyperbole. And you gotta love a guy who was thought to be promoting bestiality by the Hays Office (that would be the original ending to "Red Hot Riding Hood").
12.) Rocky & Bullwinkle: The first really successful animated satire. Man, Jay Ward & Bill Scott got away with stuff that'd get people FIRED today!
Honorable Mentions
*Sheep in the Big City: This is probably the best CC, and it's really a spiritual heir to Rocky & Bullwinkle, right down to villains arguing with the narrator about plot points.
*The first few seasons of X-Men: This show got me into comics, and despite the ugly everyone's-on-steroids designs & use of Mr. Sinister, it was pretty loyal to the series.
*Daria: My guide on how to survive high school and probably the only good to ever come out of Beavis & Butthead.
*Liquid Television: Some of the finest shorts I've ever seen have been on here. I have a nostalgiac fondness for "Cat & Mouse at The Home".
*Xyber 9: One of the reasons I will always hate Fox Kids. This was a show with potential. Yeah, plotwise it was a weird Star Wars/King Arthur amalgam, but it could've been really good. Instead, it was canned for... are you ready... Godzilla! Not fair at all.
*The second season of Jonny Quest: The Real Adventures: They tried. Lousy animation studio aside, they got a good cast (especially Quinton Flynn as Jonny), and they tried to make a real follow-up to the 60s series. While the first season had good animation, the collagin-lip designs were ugly, and they seemed interested in only using the names associated with the series & nothing else.
Man, that's a weird list. I left anime off just to be fair; I tend to treat it like a separate genre, really. Can't wait to hear what sorta reactions THIS rogue's gallery of shows gets.

Superman:The Animated Series- this had to be the best incarnation of superman on telivision. The voice acting was superb, and the stories well written. Many of my favorites are ones that didn't have a super villian at the center of the story. Too bad it was cut so short. After "Legacy", there was so much potential. Although I'm probably one of the many few, I liked it better than B:TAS or TNBA. >cringes from ardent batman fans> :D

I doubt that many of you have heard of most of these shows:
Eek!stravaganza - From the mind of Savage Steve Holland (one of the most underrated filmmakers ever) came this goofy show about a purple cat who believes that "It never hurts to help."
The Weekenders - This cartoon about four friends who live for the weekend is perhaps one of Disney's best-ever shows.
Ren & Stimpy (first season only) - John K.'s insane travails of an iracsible chihuahua and a dopey cat was perhaps the best of the first Nicktoons. Pity what happened after John was canned.
Toonsylvania - Featuring a number of "Animaniacs" alumni, this cartoon is weird and very funny.
Also, Cartoon Man, you need to explain why you like these shows.

yeah, I said that above about something. Go ahead people and blab ALL YOU WANT about what you think fills out the entire darned list. Its pointless though without telling WHY you like it and WHY it stands apart from the rest and WHY it should be in the list. I only scrached the surface about what i enjoy of MIB the animated series and WHY it was good. You guys just make these little lists and call it okay---
making a huge list of just show names is not going to cut it. Take a minute out of your life and just write up SOMETHING!

I miss MIB....I didn't like it when it 1st came on (mainly cause I didn't watch cause I thought it was a silly idea...boy was I wrong)
Anyway, now I almost wish I spoke spanish, since telemundo still airs the show.
*sigh*
hrm, if I could get the translation thinggie here on the boards to work on my TV...

Okay, I personally don't think these series need explanation they are that good. But it is sad that people don't know better, thus I must explain.
The Simpsons
The idiosyncransies, the in-jokes to popular culture, they sometimes may go right over your head if you are not informed. If you never watched the original Twilight Zone episodes, you wouldv'e never got those early Tree House of Horror episodes.
Batman:TAS/TNBA
The finest adaption of a comic book character to animation ever.
Mighty Max
The only cartoon series I've seen that Dove-Tailed upon itself. A show that was very informative, and had cool yet interesting villians, and a remorseless arch nemesis named Skull Master who was literally scary.
Gargoyles
The finest animated show Disney made. It got rid of the kiddie stuff and went for the epic tale that was partly inspired by comic books, myth, legends, and the urban and remarkably accurate setting of New York.
Futurama
The Simpsons meets Sci-Fi. It's the same thing, yet much more. The inuendos to science fiction that again goes over the heads of those ill-informed. Perfect example, the floating eye creature from Big Trouble in Little China, the episode where Fry impersonated a robot one of the robots turned a pointed making this gasping sound that boggled me with familiarity. Until I watched John Carpenters the Thing. Little things like that make this series great.
Justice League
finally, we see the DC Universe from not one hero, but seven. This time taking on big epic plots, which the writers proved they were ready for with all the two-parters they had in previous series of Supes and Bats. It takes the cartoon out, and the comic book in, and adds regalness and respect. The creators would be proud, not rolling over in their graves.
Superman:TAS
This was the Superman that could never be done in Hollywood or on TV. This is the perfect amalgam of comic to film. Darkseid, Luthor, Brainiac, all these conflicts of Superman's life and even a Supergirl for good measure. Did anyone else notice the Seinfeld little tributes here and there. You have to really pay attention to see them.
Dragonball Z/GT (The best action cartoon infinity!)
Never befpre has American television seen such action packed within the 22 minutes of animation like this series. Yes, they do talk alot for episodes at a time, but like a novel, they are simply building to a climax. And the pay off is worth the wait. Everyone I know is interested in this series, but just doesn't have the time or patience to sit through months of viewing. They only get interested when the fighting starts, and it is more than most Kung-Fu flicks could ever achieve on film.
Thundercats
A little bit cheesy, but behind the scenes, there is a lot of influences from Tolkien to Lovecraft on this series. The stories were sometimes typical, but some were dark, and uncertain, much like the decade that spawned it. BTW, I was one of the kids who saw Thundercats Live! at Madison Square Garden, and I still have the glowing sword that took two C or D batteries somewhere, anyone else.
SWAT Kats
This series was obviously created by the smack-on-the-head stand-@-attention wave of Batman clones. Thus Hanna-Barbera made one of the most sucessful modern action toons around. SWAT Kats, had to be made by guys who digged comic books and sci-fi. With arguably the best rogues gallery in made-from-scratch-animation, that I'd ever seen. Dark Kat, Metallikats, Dr. Viper, Pastmaster, and they even had a kinda "Sinister Six" tribute season finale where Dr. Viper, the Metallikats, and Dark Kat teamed up. This is one series that should be updated on Cartoon Network, and made seriously this time. Although the comedy relief was also a great attribute of the show.

We're about to the end of the first part of the process.
Second stage, I think one of the mods will close the thread and go thru and cull out the repeats and put together a list of all the "nominees" and put it into a new thread. That will be the "Here's a list of everything that has been proposed." It will only be up for informational purposes.
Third stage, everyone will be eligible to send in a ballot of their top 5 picks.
Fourth stage, the mods will sort out a Top 10 list based on that blizzard of ballots. That list will be posted for one final balloting session to group those 10 into a final ordering.
At least, that's what I understand the plan to be. :D

Batman:The Animated Series -this was a groundbreaking action cartoon;it had it all:great voicework, good animation, and well written stories. IMO,it was the best cartoon series.
My second nomination would have to go to....Superman:The Animated Series -The crew at WB learned a few more more things when it came to animation with this show. I liked the way the characters were more streamlined and they moved just a little bit better than they did in B:TAS. The voicework and writing was also just as great as B:TAS. It's a shame the series had such a short run.

Joe Tulley has closed the nominations for best cartoon shorts. We will move into the next phase later.
Maxie is tallying the votes and I think he wants nominations for best series to go until Tuesday.

No he doesn't! And so he just closed the thread!
For those paying attention: This thread was intended to stir up memories of all the good shows out there. I'll go thru this thread and put together a master list of all the shows proposed. Then early next week we'll get down to the business of putting together the Top 10 list.
