Toon Zone is considering making a "Top Ten Cartoon Shorts" of all time. The spotlight is on animated motion picture and television shorts pitched at any audience: adult, teen, or children; from the 1950s to today's toons.

Right now we are in the primitive stages of nominations. Nominations for best cartoon shorts on the Termite Terrace, and best cartoon series on Anigen.

Here is what you do: post your nomination with a little blurb.

Example:
Duck Amuck
Many special effects and sight gags make this Daffy Duck cartoon the best WB short ever!

Please! Do NOT flame someone for their personal opinion. Thanks!

Be sure to visit the sister thread on the Anigen Board: The "Top Ten Cartoon Series" (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16676) where you can nominate and discuss your favorite cartoon series.

Here's my nomination:

"The Daffy Doc" (1938)
Very clever cartoon. The early Daffy is hilarious!
Bob Clampett's best work is seen in this classic!

I wonder if w can list shorts from independents or other studios, because there's some exceptional stuff that isn't from WB, MGM or Disney? What are the parameters?

Gets my nomination:

Rabbit Rampage
An early funny cartoon. Very very funny! :D

I would assume any short subjects are OK (in all the discussion of this thing I've read, there was nothing indicating that independents were not allowed).

Besides, a "greatest short subject" thread isn't very meaningful if it only includes three studios.

Yes. You can list independants. In fact I couldn't think of a best cartoon shorts list without The Cat Came Back or The Big Snit. ;)

Hanna-Barbara product like Pixie and Dixie could be considered a series or on an individual short basis.

The Dork Knight

Porky In Wackyland
100% classic. One of the best! Clampett's best work!

Best short EVER???? Well I don't know if I could list only one short for my all time favorite, but here are my all-time favorites from individual cartoon studios (one for each studio):

WB:

Hare Ribbin'
This cartoon has some of the best special effects of its time. Bugs Bunny, great Bob McKimson and Rod Scribner animation, funny scenes, and an ending proving that Bugs isn't afraid to resort to murder. ;)

MGM:

Mouse Cleaning
A classic Tom and Jerry premise, and Tom's hilarious expressions to Jerry's messes! This is a classic that you won't see uncut on TV!

DISNEY:

Der Fuehrer's Face
This is one short that really deserved the Academy Award (which it won). A catchy song throughout the cartoon, and Donald's hallucination is hilarious! It's too bad this is a banned cartoon, if Disney would release to the public, they could call Donald "that Oscar winning duck".

UNIVERSAL:

Barber of Seville
Woody Woodpecker, a very funny premise, great dialogue, wonderful Emery Hawkins animation, what else could a cartoon fan ask for?

Eh, what the hey, here are mine from other studios besides WB:

COLUMBIA:

"The Fox and the Grapes" (1941/with Fox and the Crow):
A true classic marking the first appearance of The Fox and The Crow. The animation is excellent and thebackgrounds are beautiful.

UB IWERKS:

"Techo-Cracked" (1933/with Flip the Frog):
Very funny. Flip tries to build his own robot to do his work. GREAT!

UNIVERSAL:

"Knock, Knock" (1940/with Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda):
A very good cartoon. Woody's first appearance is a true landmark in animation!

FLEISCHER:

"The Robot" (1932/with Bimbo):
This classic features the Fleischer's least-known cartoon star, Bimbo. In this cartoon Bimbo guilds a robot to help him win a boxing match! Excellent!

Tintin

MGM:
The Cat That Hated People

A great MGM classics cartoon! It's also the most imaginated!

Disney:
Der Fueher's Face:One of the greatest WW2 cartoons ever made in the history of the animated cartoon. The cleaver storyline is nothing but a dream for Donald. When you watch this cartoon, it makes you think that Donald is really working for the nazis.

MGM:
The Zoot Cat: This is one of favortie T&J cartoons, the animation is top notch and the lively musical score goes right along to the cartoon. The highlight is when tom actually talks throughout the entire cartoon, with Jerry saying a few lines.

More to come later....

Having taken some time to contemplate this, as well as realize that picking one or two was just flat impossible, here are my choices:

WB: A Wild Hare-early Bugs Bunny, probably the best formative Bugs Bunny.

Rhapsody in Rivets-Fantastic short! The use of classical music and timing the animation to the music is great!

MGM: Peace On Earth-One of the best of all time! After 60+ years it still carries an impact.

The Blitz Wolf-Probably the second best Avery of all time and a prototype for his style.

Columbia/Mintz: The Little Match Girl Absolutely stunning short and compared to most of what Mintz laid his paws on, amazing that it came from the place and time that it did.

Fleischer-Popeye Meets Sinbad the Sailor-Anyone who's seen it knows why!
Exceptionally detailed art.

Disney-Der Fuehrer's Face-Disney's best short of all time and a remarkable piece of propaganda that Disney just sits on!

Skeleton Dance: Iwerks was never better than here. Still spooky after 70+ years.

UPA: Unicorn In the Garden-Incredible short, well animated and adapted from Thurber.

Tell-Tale Heart-Spooky adaptation of Poe with James Mason's narration.

Lantz: Legend of Rockabye Point-Tex Avery's best short ever! Works great even today.

Musical Moments From Chopin-Hilarious pairing of Andy Panda and Woody.

Independents: While there are probably two dozen I could pick, I'll list three here:

Closed Mondays-Will Vinton before the Raisins. Without his work, Wallace and Gromit probably don't happen.

Balance-A German short that's just plain spooky. Haunting and thought-provoking.

Great-My favorite short of all time and did a lot of what Monty Python's Terry Gilliam became famous for about the same time period. A great cartoon.

NFBC-The Big Snit:Strange and funny cartoon

The Cat Came Back: Bizarre and funny

George and Rosemary-I know that's three, but I had to list this one! The most romantic cartoon I've seen in my life and incredibly funny as well!

I'm done now.

'Why did you hit me in the head Leopold. You know that makes me very angry.'

"Feline Frameup" (1954) great Chuck jones film featuring three of his unsung stars, Claude Cat, Marc Anthony, and Pussyfoot. Claude and Marc Anthony try to get each other in trouble with their human owner. Brilliant, funny cartoon.

My favorites:

WB - Two-way tie between 1) "Often an Orphan" and 2) "Fox-Terror". Often an Orphan is Chuck Jones at his best with great dialogue, hysterical animation (of Charlie's angst-ridden monologue of city life) and hilarious gags. Fox-Terror is one of the most imaginative WB cartoons with its many plot pegs (the constant ringing of the fox alarm, the fox's many schemes to get rid of Dawg and Foggy, the folding box routine) and is one of the rare Foggy cartoons where Foghorn and the dog actually team up against another foe (the other being "The High and the Flighty"). I'd say it's one of McKimson's finest directing jobs.

MGM - For Tom & Jerry, I'd have to say "Mouse Trouble". That cartoon has been kind of a favorite of mine having watched it a lot during childhood. It still holds up good today. Each backfiring scheme of Tom (suggested by the book) outdoes the next culminating in Tom blowing himself to Kingdom Come. For Tex Avery, I'd have to say "Magical Maestro" with a classic situation that only Avery could have managed. It's a shame I've heard about it being censored so much on TV broadcasts. For miscellaneous, I'd have to go with the Barney Bear cartoon, "The Bear and the Bean". This is one of those few cartoons made by the short-lived Michael Lah/Preston Blair directing team. It is very funny and proves you don't need a lot of experience directing to make a great cartoon!

Universal/Walter Lantz - No contest... "What's Sweepin'?" Some may find the choice odd but I think this is one of the most underrated classic Lantz cartoons. It proves what a competant director Don Patterson really was. It has great gags, super timing, and wonderful animation (LaVerne Harding does the first few minutes with Woody as street sweeper, Paul Smith takes over up to the scene where Wally is hanging from atop a circus tent pole, and Ray Abrams does the remainder of the cartoon from then on). Walter Lantz, some of your best work is inherent in this one cartoon.

Disney - 2-way tie between "Father's Day Off" and "No Hunting". "Father's Day Off" represents the George Geef series of the 1950's at its zenith. Wonderful set-up story, great timing, hilarious gags, and an ending that takes your breath away. "No Hunting" is one of the most vigorous cartoons Disney ever produced. The gags come bang! bang! bang! and its satire (on the subject of hunting) is witty and biting. I wish this cartoon could have won the 1955 Oscar (Don't get me wrong; it's great that WB got it for a change but I think I'd rather WB won the Oscar any other year but this one!).

I nominate 'Meet The Beat Alls.' It's not only my single most-favored Powerpuff Girls ep, but also one of the funniest things I've ever seen on series television.

Anybody with much knowledge of the Fab Four's lyrics and history should be able to understand why.

Randy H

....all from WB, because I can't seem to remember any specific Tom & Jerry shorts, and because these are my favorites anyway.

What's Opera Doc.
Stunning Animation, very dramatic design, and very much a departure from the regular Bugs/Elmer cartoons. Keeps the premise, but loses the repetitive generic forest & "wabbit season" schtick.

Duck Amuck
Alot of great sight gags, as well as sharp dialogue. Just incredible.

Duck Dodgers in the 24th & 1/2 Century!
A great space-saga, which still stands up today, even though it was made well before NASA lauched its moon rockets. Great dialogue, great sight gags. Daffy at his best.

Just a question: am I incredibly stupid, or wasn't there a cartoon with Bugs Bunny being drawn by Elmer Fudd, ala "Duck Amuck"? I just *know* there was........ I think I saw it first, before Duck Amuck, and remember being surprised that there were two cartoons like that, but I've never seen it since....

Duck! Rabbit! Duck! - My personal favorite of the Hunting Trilogy (by a narrow margin) because of the many sign gags and the novel idea of moving the time frame of winter.

Birth of a Notion - This cartoon features perhaps the best Peter Lorre impression.

The Rabbit of Seville - After the opening lyrics, the (perfect) music and animation take over to create a masterpiece.

Porky Pig's Feat - One of the most underrated WB efforts; there's something to make you laugh in every scene.

Falling Hare/Draftee Daffy - Bob Clampett directed these hilarious wartime toons that contain some hilarious moments.

Tick Tock Tuckered - A remake, but a very good one, if only for the fact that Porky and Daffy make such a great team. Speaking of which...

Daffy Doodles (and just about every other Bob McKimson-directed toon featuring the duo) - McKimson had a way with the characters, and this cartoon is a good example. Also, there are some inspired bits within (mid-air mustache, anyone?).

I *know* everybody disparages Disney, but . . .
"The Three Little Pigs." Try watching it without grinning!
"Hockey Homicide." Great character animation -and- Warner Brothers-style laughs.

Speaking of WB:
"The Three Little Bops." Not arty, but good, dumb fun.

Here are some more entires:

"A Wild Hare" - Bugs Bunny (WB):
An animation great. Considered the FIRST Bugs Bunny cartoon!

"Yelp Wanted" - Scrappy (Columbia):
The very first Scrappy cartoon, "Yelp Wanted" is a true Columbia cartoon classic.

"Der Fuehrer's Face" - Donald Duck (Disney):
The best Donald Duck WWII short ever made!

"Minnie the Moocher" - Betty Boop (Fleischer):
This is the first Betty Boop/Cab Calloway cartoon. In this cartoon Cab Calloway is rotoscoped as a Walrus!

"Snow White" - Betty Boop (Fleischer):
Very surreal. This cartoon has been considered the most surreal Fleischer cartoon of all time!

"Felix in Hollywood" - Felix the Cat:
Felix goes to Hollywood and meets Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, Doug Fairbanks, and others!

"Comicalamities" - Felix the Cat:
A classic Felix the Cat cartoon, where an animator helps Felix when he's in trouble.

"Felix Woos Woopee" - Felix the Cat:
A very enjoyable and early surrealistic classic. Felix gets drunk and starts seeing things.

"You Don't Know What You're Doin'" - Piggy (WB):
Another very surrealistic classic. The plot is alot like the one used for "Felix Woos Woopee."

"You Oughta Be in Pictures" - Porky & Daffy (WB):
A classic live action/animation film! The very first one with Porky and Daffy.

"The Great Piggy Bank Robbery" - Daffy Duck (WB):
A true classic by Bob Clampett! The animation is superb and Daffy's role as "Duck Twacy" is hilarious!

An early Disney/Ub Iwerks Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon. Very creative.

"Scrap Happy Daffy" - Daffy Duck (WB):
Daffy's GREATEST WWII moment!

"Sinkin' in the Bathtub" - Bosko (WB):
The very first WB cartoon! Also, one of the best!

"Play Ball" - Willie Whopper (Ub Iwerks):
"Say did I ever tell ya this one!" This is the very first Ub Iwerks Willie Whopper cartoon and it doubles as the best in the series!

"Watching TV" - The Simpsons (Fox):
This early Simpsons short is indeed a classic. The best part of Bart and Lisa's argument, "Change the Channel! No!"

"Bathtime" - The Simpsons (Fox):
A very funny Simpsons short. The best line is Bart's "Clean as a whistle Homer!"

"The Pink Phink" - The Pink Panther (DePatie-Freleng):
"The very first Pink Panther cartoon. Very artsy and funny!

"What's Opera Doc?" - Bugs Bunny (WB):
This classic Chuck Jones opera cartoon has the most beautiful backgrounds I ever saw in a cartoon!

"Steamboat Willie" - Mickey Mouse (Disney):
The very first sound cartoon is a classic. It's too bad that the "t**ts" scene is no longer seen!

"Lil' Ainjil" - Krazy Kat (Columbia):
This is the ONLY Columbia Krazy Kat cartoon that stayed true to the George Herriman comic strip. It is a true classic!

"My Pal Paul" - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (Lantz):
This early Walter Lantz great is about Oswald and Paul Whiteman who do a musical duel!

"The Barber of Seville" - Woody Woodpecker (Lantz):
Probably the BEST Woody Woodpecker cartoon ever made! This is pure classic!

I think his comment about the 50s on up was either in reference to TV shows, or a typo. It's impossible to leave out the pre 1950 cartoons when making a "best of" shorts list. So if you have any 20s, 30s, 40s or before cartoons you want to nominate, then go ahead.

Also, remember folks, duncanzits is looking for *why* you think these cartoons are better than every other short ever made. So please remember to put a little blurb under every nomination (they're really cracking down on plain listing at the best TV shows poll). So, anyone who hasn't supplied a description of why they think (name of cartoon here) is better than everything else should follow Pietro's example. Repost, or go back and edit your old post.

After all, you need to let future voters know why they should vote for the cartoons you chose.

I might as well include some more of my faves as well....

WB - I also have always loved "Wabbit Twouble", probably the best cartoon Clampett directed. Wonderful gags and a great ending. Others I like include "Dough Ray Me-ow" (proof positive that Davis should have been allowed to direct more), "Pizzicato Pussycat" (best use of the "artsy" 1950's style) and "Quackodile Tears" (probably my favorite 1960's WB cartoon).

Disney - Of course, I have to agree with all those who like "Hockey Homicide". This cartoon is astronomically zany and funny. Disney has seldom done better. "Clown of the Jungle" is another goody with Don losing his sanity because of a zany Aracuan Bird. "Chicken Little" is another favorite (I like its storytelling with its twisted "dark" ending) and I like the 2 Freewayphobia shorts of the 1960's. Last but not least, the seldom-seen "Education for Death" is another favorite. Oh yeah... I like "The Sleepwalker" too! Whew!!!!

Lantz - "Smoked Hams", the best cartoon directed by Dick Lundy. Woody is hilarious in this one from start to finish (and even gets his in the end too). "The Screwdriver" (a very early Woody short) is another classic and I like "Puny Express" a lot too. I know both of these are Paul J. Smith cartoons (please forgive me) but "Bunco Busters" and "Rah Rah Ruckus" are also 2 of my favorite Lantz shorts (in the former, "If Woody had gone right to the police, this would never have happened!").

Paramount/Famous - I noticed someone else here mentioned "Right Off the Bat". That is one of my favorites too. I like its storyline plus its use of Sid Raymond as the voice of the baseball coach. I also like the hilarious "Crazytown" and the late-period Popeye cartoon, "Spree Lunch".

MGM - I also like the Tom & Jerry cartoon, "The Missing Mouse". Its non-Bradley score (By Edward Plumb) is appropriately dark and mysterious as well as its storyline. Some Tex Avery cartoons I like also include "Blitz Wolf", "Car of Tomorrow", "The Counterfeit Cat", "Lonesome Lenny", and "Field and Scream."

DePatie-Freleng - The Pink Panther is this studio's best running series. My favorite Panther cartoons are the Oscar-winning "The Pink Phink", "Pinkfinger" (great secret agents period), "Pink Punch" (love that asterisk!), "Psychedelic Pink" (the 1960's have never been represented better than in this cartoon), and "G.I. Pink". The Inspector is another great series.. my all-time favorite is "Napoleon Blown-Aparte". "Toulouse la Trick" and "The Pique Poquette of Paris" aren't bad either.

Hey, Matt - I never knew the order of the animators in this one... I always thought Laverne Harding was responsible for those really crappy scenes in the 40s cartoons where the characters tend to look like balloon-style fill-ins with little to almost no incidental details (like the scene in "Playful Pelican" when Andy is sliding down the rope, and he blows on his hands to cool them off).... I'm going to have to watch "What's Sweepin'" again, with your description in mind-

P.S. You are aware that YTV's print of that has a scene missing, right?

At the end after the tent collapses, when officer Wally grabs woody and holds him by the neck, mimicking Woody's laugh back in his face, there's a dissolve to a line of circus elephants (I think we see three of them walk by), then there's a pan through the street to Woody chained to the D.S.C. bucket (insinuating that now he's been doomed to cleaning up elephant crap :o )

I'll post a screen cap of it if you want one....

Larry, the print (which I got from Jon Cooke, who got it from you) I have has the ending complete. Did this come from a 8 or 16mm film print?

It was a 16mm film print I bought a few years ago.

Rabbit Fire......Why? because it may be for me, the funnist one that I can remember, Daffy gets it, readjusts his beak, gets it again, and again...and more...Even thinking about poor Daffy, makes me laugh...and in the end, that is what makes them great...They make us laugh....Yea, there is artistic value, the music, the colors, the writing, and so on. But 45 years ago when I saw that in the theater, I laughed, and I laugh at it now...Sure, there are some other funny ones, but you only get one here, so that's all folks.

Let me get mine own up here so Joe can count them:

Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers- The most well-known of their adventures. The claymation is spectacular, especially during the train scene with the penguin. So good all the Film Study classes at my school are watching it!

Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave- An even more advanced claymation short! Nick Park makes a prototype scene for Chicken Run!

The Cat Came Back- The reoccuring audio and visual motif makes this cartoon so great!

The Big Snit- This couple tries to play Scrabble, but the husband is preoccupied sawing everything in half and the wife is shaking her eyes everywhere. Still they are paying more attentain to the game than the nuclear bombing going on outside! This popular couple returned for another cartoon.

Okay, this thread is now closed. We won't accept any more nominations. I will begin to organize these tomorrow and hopefully we will have some kind of ballots set up soon.

Note to John-Paul: I need better descriptions of your picks, since I have no idea what series most of them belong to. Please PM me with some information on who the stars of these cartoons are, or who made them, or preferably both. I will PM you just in case you either don't read this or forget. And make sure to cover the cartoons listed in all of your posts in this thread, not just the most recent one! If you don't do this, I won't be able to list your picks.

Thanks to everyone who participated! :D
