So I FINALLY got the portfolio requirements mailed to me today from Sheridan College, a bigass animation school, apparently "The harvard of animation".
They want 16 drawings, a storyboard and a short story.
2 of household objects, one showing an accurate observation, and one showing how it would look if it were affected by an external force (ie snowfall, heavy wind).
2 of freehand line drawings of room: one of accurate observation, plus character sitting in that space, one from character's point of view and interpret how the character sees the room.
6 quick drawings of naked human figures, 3 showing stillness, 3 showing action.
4 drawings using their character design doing a sequence of actions.
8 to 12 storyboard panels telling how the art of animation will affect my life should I graduate this program (I think I'll need help coming up with enough suck-up BS).
Short story involving specific scenario.
All due a week before FEBRUARY 8!
Considering I have summatives next week and exams the week after that...

Don't worry, you'll get it all done. If you really want something bad enough, you can find a way to through it. Good luck!

Dude, I feel sorry for you. I think you can do it, though. When you want something like that (and I can tell you really want to go to this school), the human body and mind will put itself to the limit to do it. I have a feeling that the vast majority of the board have sympathy for you, but also have faith in you.
Nightflower, you can't eat an elephant whole. One bite at a time, my friend.

Bullplop. You're art is amazing, NF, so you can do it and that's all there is to it. You'd be suprised at what you can live through, especially with your tallent.
Aint nothin' to it but to do it.

You can do it Nightflower!!! Just think about it like this: if drawing is really something you love to do, then they're basically saying, "read x number of comics" or "watch x number of cartoons" or "party x amount w/ your boyfriend" or something like that :p

Yeah.....but where am I going to find the time amidst studying for my summatives and exams? :( Hmmm, time to make better use of English class... (Although I think the naked people prerequisite is out of the question during school time! :p)

Wow. Big list if you look at it all at once... but if you do the drawings one at a time, they'll get done. Setting a goal of, say, doing one per day wouldn't be so bad...

I have an idea for the storyboard. How about after going to Sheridan you create one of the greatest animated movies ever that makes people in the US & Canada realize cartoons arent for kids, and they start respecting animation more as a whole. And the whole animation/movie industry changes. All because of little, ole Sheridan. And you, of course.
Is that too over the top?

This is a doozy of a portfolio. Trial by fire, I guess. If you can handle this, you can handle anything.
What usually happens to me on a big assignment like this is I look at it, and just freeze, thinking that there's no way I can handle it all. Sometimes I wind up doing absolutely nothing. Don't let this happen to you!! Hatter's advice sounds like the perfect antidote for this kind of thing, IMHO.
Also, do you mind if I share a little personal experience? Sit for a spell...this is going to be one of those rare occasions where I type out a really long post. :D
Last April, I had to submit a portfolio to the art department at the college I attend. Well, every second-year student who was planning to be a graphic design major did, actually. A panel of art professors would then review each portfolio and determine whether the student would continue on to the higher level design classes, or they'd have to start all over in some other major. :o
The portfolio had to include not only drawings, but computer-generated work. It was the latter part that had me down; I thought that everything I had made entirely on the computer flat-out sucked. I was still learning how to use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and the like at the time, and that was just blatantly obvious in my work.
Since I was a graphic design major, I was fairly certain that whoever was reviewing my portfolio would look at those more than my drawings. I had pretty much convinced myself that I wasn't going to pass the concentration exam, and started mentally preparing myself to take the rejection and move on.
But for some insane reason, I decided to give it my all anyway. I spent most of the week before the portfolio was due (up until 1:30 in the morning!) reworking, remounting, spray fixing the heck out of things...I even bought some posterboard to make dividers for the portfolio, so the people reviewing it could easily find my work from each class. Man, I was so relieved when I finally turned that thing in. I felt like running to the middle of the campus and shouting, "YESSSS! I'm FREE!!" (But I didn't.) :D
Then a few days later, while I was working a paper or something... I don't really remember what I was doing... one of my professors came up to me and said, "Congratulations."
"For what?" I asked. Lo and behold, I had passed the concentration exam.
I realize your situation's a bit different than mine... But give it everything you've got anyway, you might just surprise yourself. I don't think you'll have any problems getting in, but even if you don't...I for one will still think you're an incredibly talented artist. Heck, I don't think anything will change that. Now go, stop reading my drivel, and show 'em what you're made of! :D

It may look close to imposible but just take it one drawing at a time.
Good luck and tell us how it goes.

I'm still wondering what I could do for the storyboard requirement... 12 panels is not that much... I think it'll involve restoring Disney and getting rid of the sequel crap though :P
The problem with art programs is everyone wants something specific, so you can't hand in the same stuff for different portfolios  At least, I can't within the time limit.
Anyway.... sorry for complaining here.... lol! I don't usually, and I won't again probably, I was just kind of taken aback by all the stuff they wanted, when I thought I could hand in anything (I also thought the deadline was mid-March). But thanks for all the encourage! You're all very nice :)
