View Full Version : Is Suncoast/SamGoody having another wave of closers?

I was looking at the first couple pages of this thread here (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=160873&highlight=Suncoast+Sam+Goody+closing) because my local SamGoody is closing. I thought the store in my local area wasn't part the closers. But, as I was going to Sears to buy a gift card for mother's day, I saw people with signs announcing that SamGoody was closing and everything was on sale for 40 to 60 percent. Needless to say, I've bought all of Jubui Chan 2 along 3 other DVDs for fewer than 100 dollars.
(Edit-2/09/2007, I might as well say it was the Santa Maria, Ca store.)

If the employee I spoke with at Sam Goody was tell me the truth all the Sam Goody stores in the Chicagoland area were closing. There were three Suncoasts close to me, but one closed soon after Media Play filed for bankrupcy. Just recently I went to one of the two remaining Suncoast stores, only to find out they were closing too. An employee told me they hadn't received any new merchandise in five weeks, so they pretty much knew it was coming.
The Sam Goody here at King of Prussia Mall closed a while ago (and with the actual GOOD fye closed to make room for some Sony store, KOP Mall is now dead to me).
Not too sure about the Suncoast in White Marsh or, more importantly, Marley Station, though. If the Marley SC closes, I will be extremely upset. I loved that Suncoast.

Now that yeah mention it a SunCoast I've been to was alsp closing. They were having 50% off on anime dvds. Sweet bliss. If only I had more money I would have bought a lot of anime. So far I was able to get:
Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok Vol.1
Tenchi Muyo! Vol.1
Osamu Tsuka's Metropolis

A good majority of the Sam Goody and Suncoast locations are being either closed or converted to FYE. Which could be a good thing, considering the closest FYE to here is in tiny little Flagstaff, of all places.

Not here. My college is a 10 minute drive, if that, to get there. Go past a couple stoplights and you're there.
Granted, by next week I'll never go to KOP again.

Musicland sold off its entire Sam Goody and Suncoast Chains to Transworld Entertainment. Transworld owns Wherehouse, FYE and Second Spin among others. The deal did not include all the stores so any store not part of the deal stayed in bankruptcy and were likely rejected by Musicland thereby leases terminating and stores closing. The stores taken over by Transworld will likely be converted and will soon no longer be Sam Goody or Suncoast but some other concept. This will likely take a couple of years to fully transition based on the number of stores being transitioned.
I hope this explains what is going here so don't be surprised if more stores close.

Well, not even fyes are safe, as the big one in King of Prussia (aka the good one) is being turned into a Sony Store.

Well, not even fyes are safe, as the big one in King of Prussia (aka the good one) is being turned into a Sony Store.
That is likely because the FYE lease expired and for the purpose of Tenant mix and/or rent that could be made by Landlord, Sony was a preferrable deal for the Landlord. Sony is considered a higher end retailer than an FYE store. Or it could have been that the store was not making Transworld sales projections and Transworld decided not to renew.

I heard that Sam Goody was bought out by Best Buy about 3 or 4 years ago cause the one in Stockton California was shut down after best buy opened, we also lost our FYE in the Tracy Ca Mall due to the Mall raising the rent on all stores, I don't know if Suncoast in Modesto Ca is still there, since I haven't been to the Mall there in 3 years
Best Buy owned Musicland a couple years ago, but sold them off about 3 years ago.

Earlier this year, the Sam Goody store in Woodfield in Schaumburg finally closed down after many years (There were originally 2 Musicland stores in Woodfield, one closed down. In later years a J.R.'s Music Shop became Sam Goody, then it closed in about 1994-1995 and the Musicland store became Sam Goody at the same time).
Now in Woodfield: The only places you can music CD's in the mall but in limited selections are Disney Store, Hot Topic, and Sony Style. You can even look for music CD's in the stores near Woodfield Mall - Borders, Barnes and Noble, Tower Records, Circuit City, Best Buy, and Target.

The Southland store is closing now too. I must say, I got all but the first "Mao Chan" DVDs at a great price before the Dearborn one closed. I would have likely gotten more, except I unfortunately lost my ATM card just as it was closing up for good....

Till the last time I went to Plaza las Americas here in Puertorico or to the next 3 other malls who have Suncoast stores, they were still open. I noticed that Plaza las Americas opened a Sony store. That had to be around two months ago since I had not seen it before when I discovered it.
If Suncoast movies was sold, then I guess the effects will be felt here in Puertorico as well.
Altough there aren't any Sam Goody stores here in PR.

My Suncoast is now officially closed.
And I don't think anyone wants to buy it.
It's starting to smell like cheese and seems to bleed chocolate milk. It has become quite the social spot for the mice, though.

I reserved a bunch of summer releases at Suncoast, expecting to pick them up at their Manhattan Mall store... and finding it closed. So when I got my pick-up calls, I asked them to hold my reservations until the end of August. The upside? The guy from the Westside Pavilon store I'd made my reservations at did say that the West Coast managers were looking into reopening some locations in the near future.

The Suncoast at the Mall of America is no more. Another piece of my childhood, gone. Luckily, there are still two Suncoasts that are closer to where I live anyway, which is certainly more than many other areas of the U.S.

Maybe not. If you like to hop over to Detroit for the weekend, I believe there's some cheapie air or train packages (practically around the corner from the Dearborn train station is the Fairlane Town Center where Suncoast is at, just a five-minute trip by bus, really.

no they are not closing down more stores. if they do its because it is unprofitable. The reason the Suncoast in the Mall of America closed was becuase the rent is way to expensive, and people would shop at Sam Goody instead of Suncast, so it was unprofitable to have a Suncoast there and besides, Sam Goody and Suncoast are the same company, so there is no point in having two there. Also, Suncoast actually is opening up six more stores in the U.S.! Trans World Entertainment also is considering opening up six more stores after that. So, Suncoast is not closing down. Also, there are still four more stores not that far away from the Mall of America, so no need to complain! :)

The Suncoast store here in Fort Worth didn't close ,they were forced by the malls to close and get out. They werenot upscale enough for the customers the malls wanted to seek.I like the SunCoast store and was surprised to see it gone when I went to teh mall one time. This was several years ago.

I happened to be traveling out of town last weekend, and happened to stop at a mall on Grand River Avenue in Lansing, MI. And wouldn't you know it, they have a Suncoast store! (By the way, if you ever happen to be going by Meridian Mall, I'd recommend stopping, and not just for the Suncoast store. It's a very attractive looking place with a stunning variety of stores.)
Has anybody else seen any more open Suncoast stores in their neighborhood as of late?

Has anybody else seen any more open Suncoast stores in their neighborhood as of late? Nope; in fact, the Suncoast in the Rosedale Mall (of Roseville, MN) closed a couple weeks ago. A Suncoast that I went to for four years, gone. I don't have to tell you, despite how many have closed in the last year, it was still a shock.
The Suncoast in Marley Station near here is still open. They even had a little mini-festival sponsored by Viz Media.

The Suncoast Video in Valley Stream, NY initially closed well over a year ago. The store was gutted and nothing ever opened there. Then around October or November of last year I go past that location and there it was. Suncoast video was not only there, it looked as if it had never gone. It was the creepiest thing I've ever seen.
Afterwards I popped into the Hallmark store for the some ornaments. One guy there took notice of the Suncoast Video bag I was carrying. Before he could say anything I said, "I was as surprised as you are."
True story.

I'll have to check the Suncoast in Carlsbad and Escondido to see if they have a "going out of business so our items are actually at normal price" deal.
If not, I'll let anyone know if the socal Suncoasts are still open. I know most San Diego county Sam Goodys are gone though.

heheh, Suncoast was actually owned by Best Buy for a little while. Alot of their problems cropped up when BB sold them off. BB took all of their contracts and left them with a massive supply problem. It's one of the reasons that CPM had all of those problems a year ago.
Suncoast wasn't perfect under Best Buy either. Because Best Buy was greedy, they wouldn't allow Suncoast to have many specials or sales. No new release sales, no "Buy 1, get 1 50% off" sales, no "Save $5 off all Geneon DVDs" sales, no used DVDs, nothing like that. Suncoast got MUCH better from a quality standpoint once they left Best Buy.

Sorry to ULTRA BUMP this topic, But I was wondering if any more Suncoasts have closed in the territorial US? here in Puerto Rico one of the last remaining Suncoasts in the Metropolitan area has closed. the one located at Plaza las Americas, Shopping Mall in San Juan.
They mentioned that all reservations and specials will be honored at Spec's which is their final breaches remaining. The ones at Plaza Carolina and Plaza del Sol closed years ago. So it was a shocking surprise to see the one at Plaza las Americas closing.
Sad I never got the Chobits volume 9 from Plaza Carolina which came empty and the rest of the Suncoasts never had it.

Last time I was there, I didn't even bother to go there, because I actually had an odd feeling. More on that a bit later.
(sniff) But, I thank this place for making me interested even more in anime. But it hasn't been the same recently.
Well, one of my most favourite places ever is gone. (sigh)
Best to move on, I guess.

My last visit there was the reason I had the odd feeling, with the breaches from Suncoast being there. I didn't think to throughly, though.
Also, I always have thought of calling this Spec's "Spec's/f.y.e.". Why can't they just remane it f.y.e? They even have f.y.e. plastic bags.
And yes, I witnessed (sorta) the closing of both stores. Plaza del Sol had a sale, when I went there the first time ever in that mall...
Plaza Carolina, on the other hand, I only had 2 visits there, and on the third visit, it was closed, and I being even more aware about store closings in here.
Yet, the Plaza las Americas one was able to survive 3 more years. Sounds kinda amazing, doesn't it?

The Plaza las Americas one always had the events and the fact that it was on the biggest mall of the country it helped even things out. Around two weeks ago they had a notice where it said they would close down which took me for surprise. I recall hearing there was a Suncoast in Ponce, not sure if it closed as well. The Plaza Carolina one wasn't a surprise it's closure since it was a bit messy and I still remenber my Chobits VOL.9 came empty.

As of 7/20/09, there's only one Suncoast left in the Twin Cities area: Maplewood. And who knows how long that will last.
There are still two FYEs in my area, one in the Mall of America and the other in Burnsville. But the former, I would imagine, has some stiff competition now that a Best Buy is literally DOWN THE HALL. I can't imagine it lasting much longer, sadly.
