View Full Version : Was the Watchtower kept a secret?

I was wondering the other day: How did Batman have the Watchtower built? Sure, hiding the money was easy (like he told Superman, "It was a hidden item in the R&D budget."), but how could he have had such a massive space station built and everyone on Earth NOT know about it???

I don't think that they're even trying to hide it--it would be very difficult--but it hasn't been addressed on the show yet.
I'd be more interested in how it got into orbit. Did Green Lantern fly it up there?

Well, I would think that it was built IN orbit, much like the real-life International Space Station is being built out in space as we speak.
Which would again bring up the question... if hundreds of astronauts in space and thousands of engineers on the ground made the Watchtower, hiding the money (even if the Watchtower itself is no secret) is going to be a very difficult thing to do.

He's Batman.

I think Karkull's GL explanation works best. Though the Watchtower is plainly not a "secret," the secrecy surrounding the circumstances of its construction (its connection to Wayne Enterprises, for instance) I think would be maximized if it were constructed on Earth and then hauled into orbit by the JL members themselves.

its as secret as the bat-computer, the bat-vehicles and the other gadgets that the batman uses-- lets face it how on earth does he get this stuff made without alerting ANYONE in his company?

I always figured it was one of those things that went like this:
You know it's impossible. Trying to figure out a logical explanation is useless. It's just......there
So, I was just accepting the fact that the Watchtower was...there..
But, I really like your theory Karkull....I think I'll stick with that one..hehe

Superman literally rebuilt the Watchtower in the comic.
Maybe Batman financed it with laundry money and had the rest of the fellers build it in space.
And to answer a previous question, Batman builds his own stuff and there is this guy which I have no clue how he got there... he lives in the caves and builds things that Batman provides the plans for.

Can anyone explain the icons at the left of the threads for me? I understand a closed envelope, and I know when a new message pops in, as it's somewhat highlighted in yellow. But what does an envelope with a dark circle (as its seal) signify? Thanks. :)

First off..you seem to still be a newbie..so..welcome to the boards!
Second... The dark circle in the envelope signifys that you posted in that subject.
An, if you have anymore questions on the way the board works ,be sure to ask them over at the Is This Thing On?? (http://forums.toonzone.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=4), as you'll probably be able to get a better and faster answer there. Also, check out the Rules (http://forums.toonzone.net/misc.php?s=&action=showrules) and the FAQ (http://forums.toonzone.net/misc.php?s=&action=faq) for anymore questions you might have, they are probably answered in the FAQ, and the rules are what you'll wanna go over anyway.
Now then..back on topic! :)

Shoot...I'd like to meet Batman's contractors!
Actually, that sounds about right. Batman does keep guys on retainer to do work specifically for him--like Earl Cooper from The Mechanic--or maybe he just hires really discreet companies to do the work.

Well, it could've been something like this: Wayne Enterprises announce a vast, highly advanced orbital research station. Towards they very end of construction, however, funding runs a litlle short, and the project is shut down. Instead of scapping the station, however, Wayne "donates" the sattelite to the Justice League, for a huge tax write off, of couse. :p

That would be Harold, builder of all things Bat-related and keeper of Ace The Bathound. However, I don't think he's still around after the events of Zero Hour.

This was brought up in another thread, but I think it's worth revisiting. The JL Watchtower is a trillion dollar project, easily. It could not have been a "line item in the Wayne Aerospace R&D budget." It's also too costly a project to have been built by any individual company or entity. From the pictures we've seen, you could just about fit the ISS (International Space Station) in the habitable pressure dome.
I once asked at a convention (when I was much younger) how the X-Men were able to afford to buy aircraft that would cost tens of millions of dollars, and the answer I got satisfies both that question and this issue; it's a line from Mystery Science Theater 3000's theme song: "Repeat to yourself 'It's just a show,' so you might as well relax."
The original JLA satellite was built using Thanagarian and Kryptonian technology in space, by Superman, Green Lantern, the Flash, and Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Most of the work was done at superspeed. At least that I could buy, given their powers and heritage. ;)

In the cartoon, Batman gets his car from a mechanic named Earl Cooper.
