Release Info:
US: May 15th, 2006
Rated: E for "Everyone" (Comic Mischief)
MSRP: $34.99

Short Description:

It's been more than 20 years since Super Mario Bros. first arrived, and now Mario and Luigi are back in an all-new platformer for Nintendo DS. Boasting incredible 3D graphics to accompany classic 2D gameplay, this fast-paced adventure will have Mario fans cheering.

New Super Mario Bros. features eight all-new worlds, each filled with extra levels, hidden paths, and secrets galore. It's possible to complete the game without visiting every world, which means you'll have to track down many alternate exits to visit every nook and cranny in the game.

Features:

Run, jump, and stomp your way through raging volcanoes, tropical islands, snowcapped peaks, and unimaginable challenges!

Grab a Mega Mushroom and grow to incredible proportions, or smash through your foes in a blue Koopa shell!

There are two multiplayer modes in New Super Mario Bros. -- Mario vs. Luigi and Minigames. In Mario vs. Luigi mode, it's brother vs. brother in a race for Stars. The goal of the game is to collect the Stars that appear throughout the stage at timed intervals. If your brother gets a Star first, don't worry. Any time you damage your bro, he'll drop one of his Stars and you can claim it for yourself. This mode is available for two players, and you only need one game card to play.

New Power Ups! You'll find classic power-ups like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower in the game, and there are some all-new power-ups that let Mario explore the Mushroom Kingdom like never before.

New Moves! New Super Mario Bros. expands Mario's arsenal of moves to include some very powerful advanced techniques. If you want to uncover every secret in the game, you'll have to master them all.

The Minigames mode offers a wide variety of simple touch-screen activities. You can challenge them solo, or use them as the basis of a minigame tournament for up to four players. The minigames may be simple, but they're surprisingly fun when you're putting your skills to the test against your friends.

It's interesting, the DS games have been using the touch screen less and less, I think brain Age is the only recent game that fully used it to a good extent. Heck I think this is the first DS game that doesn't even use the second screen.

This one again just uses it for mini-games and not during the main part of the game. But I hope that 2 Player stars game is similar to POW

I mean you need POW, you always need more POW

looking forward to this game! not much more of a wait!

I can't wait for this game. The idea of retrofitting old-school gameplay with novelty 3-D graphics is pretty fun (this and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass seem to be the best examples so far).

I ment really that the second screen doesn't serve as anything inventive more or less, essentialy Map or Inventory is pretty much the most common uses of it. But Maps and inventory were in GBA games of the same genre as the DS and used one screen.

But this mario platformer certainly has my attention, I enjoyed using the classic power-ups when playing the originals, and the boss battles I am especialy looking forward to. I mean you can never have enough boss battles, that's where the majority of games truely shine.

I saw a vid of the game, and I have to say I am BLOWN AWAY. Classic power ups, classic 2d gameplay, classic sound effects...man, this game will easily be the best (non RPG) Mario game since Mario World...definitely a game I want on release date.

Can't wait for this game to come out. Been waiting for this for years. That little bit of classic SMBs gameplay they gave us in Smash Brothers Melee got my mouth watering for some Side scrolling 3d game.

New Super Mario Bros.... a GREAT idea. I was looking forward to its release ever since its announcement two years ago. Man, I can't wait. Awesome boxart, too. Lol, wow, from the screenshots, it looks like the touchscreen is only used for reminding you that you're playing New Super Mario Bros. I mean, it's easy to forget, right?

Well, it's almost here. I can't wait!

After seeing some gameplay videos, New Super Mario Bros. has definitely peaked my interest. Everything about the game screams old-school, which is not a bad thing at all.

80+. If you just go quickly through the game, it'll be shorter. Sort of like Super Mario World.

I hope this isn't something you can speed run through under 20 minutes.not 20 minutes, no. ign reported that running straight through without any attempts to collect and explore everything will land you a net time of 5 or 6 hours

anybody else have any input on the lost ability to fly in this game? i have mixed feelings on it. on the one hand, i loved flying because it opens up more exploration and further secrets to unravel. i nearly soiled myself when i uncovered the secret exit in the first ghost house in the original super mario world. on the other hand, flying had a sort of "cheating" vibe to it as you can merely fly over the whole land mass (as in the previously mentioned super mario world)

Matthew Williams
05-08-2006, 04:18 PM
I'm not that upset. I kinda preferred the flying ability in SMB3 - it seemed less like cheating, although flying was certainly more interactive and rewarding in SMW. But I kinda understood that they wanted to go with a more SMB1 feel which I understand.

I can't wait for this game. This is why I bought the DS.

I picked this up the other day O_O. In my opinion, it's the best DS game to date and one of the best Mario games ever too! Second only to Super Mario Brothers 3. It could have been better, had it been a little tougher since I beat the final castle in about 5 hours, but I haven't unlocked all the secret levels yet, nor played the mini-games included. There's also a lack of interesting powerups. There's a giant mushroom, mini mushroom, regular mushroom (duh), fire flower (double-duh) and a blue shell, which allows you to spin along the ground like a koopa shell... I would have at least wanted the raccoon tail :(.
I took a video with my webcam if you want to see me play :). Go here: http://us.gamespot.com/pages/profile/index.php?user=TakashiMaze

my game froze up on me...?

i'm playing through world 4's ghost house and i could still move mario around, like running, jumping, etc, except all the boo's were frozen in place. i smashed a brick and it made the crunching sound, but the brick remained. i coin appeared on top of said brick but remained motionless

End with a time of 111, 222 or 333 I believe.

Also if you want to play as Luigi (I know I always do... Mario can shove it) hold L, R and press A on your save file. You learn about it if you beat the game but I already know because I saw it in the back of the guide book at the store. Woot for Luigi POWA!

I'm loving this game so far. Gotta play more.

I haven't had this much fun with a Mario game since Mario 64... (the original).

Freak'n great. It's simple but rightfully so. I must say though... compared to SMW and SMB3 the level design is perhaps a bit too plain. The new platforming elements are interesting though.

If you don't have it yet I hear Circuit City is selling it for 27ish rather than 35ish like most retailers.

Dogbert
05-17-2006, 09:08 AM
FYI, the cheapest price is at Best Buy if you follow these steps:

1) Get a copy of the Circuit City ad or print it from their web site.

2) Go to Best Buy and buy a video game gift card (in any amount under $23). Make sure it's the one that comes with the '$5 off any video game or accessory priced at $19.99 or higher' coupon.

3) Buy NSMB at Best Buy - have the cashier price match with CC and then use the coupon. Pay with the gift card (plus cash/credit to make up the difference).

In the end, you pay $22.99 plus tax. The only problem you might run into is if they give you a hassle over the "discount taken off the regular price" part, but they didn't say anything to me.

I finished the main game in one day. (skipping over a few worlds) I've got to say, the greatest thing possible happens right before the last boss. Perhaps it's the greatest moment in any Mario game, ever.

That alone justified my purchase of this game.

Anyhow, I'm glad that this game gets as hard as it does. I was worried that it would be a cakewalk from the reviews, but I found myself ready to throw the DS in a few levels. (there's this stupid underwater level that I had to skip because it was so frustrating. I've never liked underwater levels, and fish that chase you don't make it any easier)

I see no problems with the game. 9.8/10

You know if Super Mario Galaxy doesn't come with the power-ups like in NSMB, I think they will have shot themselves in the foot. Because this is really better than Super Mario Sunshine or even SM64 IMO. The majority of the power-ups could easily transfer well to the 3D realm but sofar havn't, and they add ALOT to the gameplay.

I mean this really raised the bar for Mario Platformers

Very few people will care, so "shot themselves in the foot" is a pretty big exaggeration.

Anyway... I finally picked this up and played through World 1 last night. Fantastic game.

I've enjoyed it, but you know what I want more now?

New Super Mario World.

Given that this one feels like a major upgrade from the original SMB with a hint of SMB3 I'd say NEW SMW would be insanely awesome because the levels in that game have a lot more depth overall (and there's a ton more secrets as well).

And if this game's level design feels a bit plain to you (as it does to me) then something based on revamping SMW would have far more interesting levels.

I'm glad it's proving to be a challenge though and the added element of getting the 3 coins to unlock stuff is also useful. And on top of that there's no more "save on level" option which made so many SMB game ports waaaaaaaaaaaaay too easily on the GBA. Though admitedly, being used to that save on level feature makes this a little bothersome when it comes to saving your progress. Or at least it usually forces me to play longer sessions so I can get to a save point before quiting and not lose my progress.

Noukon
05-17-2006, 06:52 PM
I mean in terms of doing a top notch Mario Platformer

First of all, that's completely subjective; personally, I don't feel a need for a deluge of power-ups in a 3-D Mario game.

Second, how is a qualitative thing like that "shooting themselves in the foot"? They're not going to lose sales just because there are no fire flowers in Super Mario Galaxy.

Andrew T. Hingson
05-18-2006, 01:00 AM
I fully agree. But I must admit... Mario blasting through the galaxy shooting fireballs is a pretty awesome concept... And UBER Mario could probably crush planets in that one.

just beat it and you were right, tash. that was pretty freaking cool

beginning levels were too easy, but i had fun playing them all the same. discovering the secret levels is quite fun as well. there's still like 3 or 4 i have yet to find. unlocking world seven was a chore

on a final note, i found using the blue shell to be a burden. i dodged it's use if i could unless it helped me get to a secret area. any body else agree?

I picked this up around noon today and I've almost got to World 7 now. IGN was right and I'm thankful there is no cheap way to blow through this under 20 minutes. The only downside I found with this is you can't save after every level.

That little mis-feature bites. I found it out the hard way the other day when I got through an annoying Boo House and it was right before the Mini-castle, so it doesn't save. I was annoyed the next time I turned it on and i had to go through the Boo House again.

The only downside I found with this is you can't save after every level. As easy as it is to get extra lives in this game, that's not really much of a problem if you're talking about difficulty. If you want to take a break between saving places, the DS can function in sleep mode for a week if it has a full charge.

If that's not enough, you can always save opening passages with coins for when you want to save. As long as you go a few levels here and there without opening one, you can save a few save spots for emergencies.

Luckily though, after you clear the game, you can save at any time.
Has anyone noticed a Blue mushroom house right next to world 1-1? It lets you change the backdrop for the touch screen for the coins you collect on the stages. Right now mine is the blue underground bricks.

Curious. Do mushroom houses ever regenerate?

Curious. Do mushroom houses ever regenerate?only if you beat the game with all the gold coins. also, a mushroom house will pop up at the beginning of a world depending on at what time you touch the flag pole. -11, -22, and -33 get a red house. -44, -55, and -66 get a green one. -77, -88, and -99 get a mega one

Now that I think of it, could someone speed run with the help of those cannons?

So guys how would you rate this game?I'm glad you asked. It's not as good as SMB, the original SMB2, SMB3, SMW, or SMW1:YI, but better than SMB2USA/Doki Doki Panic! and much better than Yoshi's Story and Super Princess Peach. And, I might add, I'd recommend buying all of the titles I just listed.

Bottom line, it's the first game truly deserving the recognition of being called a 2-D mario game since Yoshi's Island. I give it a 9.25 out of 10.

Now I'd like to see "New Super Mario Bros 3" and "New Super Mario World." If you haven't already heard, Yoshi's Island 2 is already planned for a late-2006 release.

Oh, and welcome to TZ, Super Girl. :)

I was finally was able to get NSMB and I loved it. Though it would have been cooler if the Racoon suit & the Frog Suit and the Koopalings from SMB3 were there.

Thanks for the welcome and what you said is true. Just got the game a hour ago and loving it more than SMB2 but the first and third one are a bit better. I did and plan on getting Yoshi Island two.

What about SMS?I was actually just talking about the 2-D Mario games. If you want me to throw in the 3-D ones as well, then I'd say it's better than SMS and way better than WW, but just behind SM64.

That said, I forgot the Game Boy Mario games. I'd judge NSMB to be better than SML2 and the Wario Land games, but about even with SML (length would give it the clear edge though). Again, all worth buying (well maybe not WL4 and definitely not WW).

Alright, so, I beat it a while back, and I've been tracking down coins and secret exits since.

I used to have one star alongside the file name, but now I have two. What did I do?

Matthew Williams

2 stars means you've cleared all the levels.

This also means that all the mushroom houses have regenerated and can be used infinitely.

I used to have one star alongside the file name, but now I have two. What did I do?There are three stars possible; one for beating the game, one for beating every level with all possible exits, and one for spending all the star coins.
