Not sure how many Tool fans there are on the board, but I figure a 5 year wait for the latest album is long enough to make its own talkback worthwhile.
Gotta say, the first time I heard it, I wasn't particularly impressed. Then it grew on me tremendously. And then, it's faded back, a bit, although I still do like it very much.
Is it Lateralus, part 2? Sort of, I guess. There's nothing wildly inventive on this album that they haven't done before. If you listen closely, you can hear riffs and licks recycled from previous songs. The artwork is sort of an extension of the artwork present on Lateralus.
It does seem to take the Lateralus sound and tighten it a bit. The sound has definitely matured, but I do miss are the soaring climaxes that were present in Undertow and especially Aenima. So in that sense, it's a bit disappointing.
With that said, I think maybe my favorite song on the album is Wings For Marie/10,000 days. I think the build-up from Wings For Marie to what I feel like is the emotional climax of the album, halfway through 10,000 days is sublime. And I think this is where they're most successful in their approach of building up songs and taking it on different paths, before coming back and making the big emotional hit.
I'm also digging Right in Two and Rosetta Stoned quite a bit.
Where does this fit into their catalogue of albums? Hard for me to say right now, but I'd place it behind Aenima, and maybe behind Lateralus. But it's growing on me.
