View Full Version : What are you doing for Summer 2006?

Well, for most of us, the summer months are coming up (that's unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere where winter will begin. Will you be doing anything special, or will you be stuck at home for the entire season?

Well, this summer -- Anime Expo 2006, Comic-Con International, and hopefully get that job I've been searching for.

Summer Physics class and work.

I can feel the fun already.

Working at the zoo and possibly going to a class, possibly math. Yup not much action around here, unless you count giraffes hanging out above you and sticking out that long tongue of theirs.

My summer is pretty much as dead-end town as you can get. I'm transferring to Western Illinois University in August, but I've already taken all the community college classes that I can. Thus, no summer classes.

My "job" is being a concessions worker at the town's decrepit theater. Unfortunately, we often get shafted for movies (we've held Meet the Fockers for three months straight). As such, I get less than 10 hours a week. My last paycheck (for 2 weeks) was $57. It's part of the reason that I've had to live at home. And, with gas prices like this and me commuting 40 miles to college 3 days a week, guess where my cash goes? My mom doesn't "believe" in helping out with my expenses...she says that her $10 bill per month for my phone (that she wanted me to get) and my car insurance is enough. Nevermind she still gets checks from my dad for those things every month...that cash ends up going to her $125 weekly church tithe. And I can't get $5 for lunch.

But that's on a tangent. Like I said, since gas prices are high, I'm not going to be going out of town often. And since all my friends have been smart enough to get out while they can (with their parent's help), they're not going to be around at all for most of the time.

So, what can I do with the guaranteed days of total freedom in which I can't afford to go anywhere?

I just bought Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 after discovering it from the resident anime/game fans at my community college (they play it for hours in the cafeteria's lounge area). It's an excellent game, even for single-player. I'll probably spend a good amount of time getting good at the game so I can stop losing to Cheap-tachi.

That, and I'll probably go to the YMCA and work out. If I have this much free time, exercise will probably be a worthwhile way to waste it. Might as well lose this gut if I've finally got the time available to.

I almost took summer courses here in Savannah, but I decided to take a break since my work this quarter has been pretty lackluster. In June I'm going to attend a friend's wedding, which is proof positive that I'm getting old. Of course there's Otakon in August, though I'm not 100% sure I'm going to attend yet. Other than that, it's work work work for me.

Whoops, I forgot to say that one of my friends will be getting married in late June (it was going to be near the end of the year originally), so I hope to attend her wedding.

Riding my bike from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska, to raise money for cancer research. I depart June 3rd and arrive in Anchorage August 12. I'll head west through New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada before reaching California and going up the West Coast. 70 days of riding and 4600 miles. Should be a blast! I'm particularly excited about San Francisco, which I've never been to before but I hear it's awesome.

My big event for the summer is going to Maui for a friend's wedding (they wanted to get married on a beach, and Lake Michigan just wasn't cutting it). On the way, I'll be spending a few days in San Francisco to meet my new niece (born in March).

Outside of that, I'll be making art, riding my bike a lot, gardening, and enjoying not having to work for the summer!

So far, my only main plan for the summer is my annual trip to Baltimore to attend Otakon, the biggest anime convention in the East Coast.

This summer, I'm going to Hawaii on the island Kauai for vacation. After that, most of my time will dedicated in stay in my local area since I will be once again playing football as a senior and summer practices can be hard, but I get through them and you learn something out of it.:)

I'll be looking for a job because they're so effing hard to get here.

I want to go to Comic-Con if only because Doug TenNapel and Grey DeLisle will be making appearances, but it won't be happening.

Once I'm done with my school work (I currently have around 13 days of school work left), I'll probably be spending my summer by using the internet and playing video games all day long.

Got to give you props for that, best of luck.

As for myself, not much that I'm aware of. I'm sure some surprises are instore, but from what I know I'll be training(Like I always do), working a new job, finally getting my car, training my little brother for Junior High, and uppin' my music collection among other things. Probally go to Vegas, as I find myself going there all the time.

Starting a regular job at my school (8 hour days as opposed to 2), for one.

I'm planning on heading off to Vegas to visit my dad. Haven't ever been there. I'm sure we'll have a fun time checking out all the shows.

Might join a company baseball team, as well.

It's lookin' to be a pretty fun summer.

Only thing planned right now is San Diego ComiCon. I'll be driving down with a friend, and we'll also be checking out a bunch of BACK TO THE FUTURE filming locations on the way down and back home. Then on August 1, I'll be going to my first Huey Lewis and the News concert. Afterwards, I'm afraid I'll have to start job hunting again. :(

Working full-time, the same as any other week/month/season. (Yeah, so I'm old ;-) ).

Non-work related activities: probalby going to Chicago on several occasions (Taste of Chicago, Chicago's gay pride parade, this year's "Gay Games" (LGBT-oriented Olympic-style sporting events) being held in Chicago, and Chicago's annual comic book convention, which I've never been to, are probably my main draws...).

Getting ready for college.

But the main thing is keeping myself in shape so that I won't gain any weight. I've been lucky these past few years, but that's because I had band camp during the scorching summer heat.

And, finish any writings I started so that college won't interfer with 'em. I know I'm not going to have a lot of time on them, with my schedule and all. (Comp. Sci.)

Other that, just relaxing and playing video games.

Sorry, force of habit (or just being reminded of it constantly by all the posts about high school/college-type elements :-) ).

Working to make money.

Playing video games, and doing other such unproductive stuff, most likely.

Hopefully by then I'll have an idea what I'm doing for college... though as it's 19 school days away, I'm not optimstic... but that's a whole other story.

I'm planning to get a job and make some money and play softball. Our team isn't going to travel as much, though we may go to Park City, Utah or Seattle for a tournament. Other than that, hopefully hang out with my friends a bunch before we all go our separate ways.

Same thing I do every year: sit on my rear and play video games.

Except this year has a twist. In addition to a job (which I did last year), I may be going to a summer school, which will pay for my college scholarship provided I attend their sponsored collage. I'll be going there for six weeks.

But yeah, mostly video games.

I'm also going to try and not be a glutton this year, either >_>

Hopefully, volunteering a lot. I have a chance at volunteering at a really nifty book store, the kid's room at the big library downtown, or there's always community things. I don't really want to do anything related to my neighborhood, but I may have to, if only because my father forces me to. Urf.

Next month, I'm almost definitely going to PrideFest (http://www.pridefest.com/). Not sure who I'm going with yet, so I'm confused (haha, confused about a LGBTQ fest). Either with my sister or with a friend and her drama/gay friends. I had wanted to volunteer there, but the head of volunteering failed to respond a second time, so I was left without information.

-July brings Summerfest, as well as a few other concerts that I shall be going to, hopefully.
-August... something is happening in August, but I can't remember what right now.
-Also, I plan to expanding my photography portfolio (A.K.A., I'm going figure out how to get better at it), and get into the art scene moreso (again).
-I want to get a bit more into athleticness. I'd love to be able to take up jogging, but my lungs have to be trained to do that (darn asthma).
-I might be going to Tennessee to visit my uncle (he just recently bought a cabin there) for a weekend, sometime during the summer, as well.

Now that there is no more schoolwork, I can guiltlessly SLEEP!!! Play video games and watch lots and lots of movies.

I've already attended a camp and facilitated another.
