Here's something for you guys to have fun with! Suppose that the CN executives finally get serious about Toonheads and decide to shock everyone by airing an episode about the Censored 11! If you were put in charge of putting together the show that would mark the first time these cartoons have been shown publicly since the sixties, what cartoons would you air? Assume that it would be an hour-long show with room for 4-5 cartoons.

Personally I'd love to see it happen. Buuuuut the only way would be if aired in the middle of the night while the whole country was off noodling...

Remember about 15-20 years ago, when someone was able to uplink to the HBO satellite transmission and beam their own "pirate video" across the country for about 10 minutes or so? Cartoon Network needs to set up some sort of covert pirate site that AOL Time Warner officials can accuse of illegally taking over their satellite transponder to beam this highly-objectional and certainly non-sanctioned priate version of "Toonheads" to unsuspecting people across the nation while maintaining the pirate station has no connection whatsoever to the company.

Make sure the transmission site is located far away from Techwood Drive in Atlanta, and buy all the equipment for the illegal uplink off the shelf and with cash (unmarked and non-sequential bills, of course), so there will be complete deniability... ;)

It'd never happen, but I think it's be wonderful if it did just the same. These films need to be drawn attention to, they're not for everybody, but they are still important. I think the best way to get around the PC aspect of it, though, is show excepts/clips from each of the films with a long commentary all the way through, documentary style. As much as I enjoy several of these as classic cartoons, I don't think these particular eleven films should be shown on TV without a whole lot of explainin'. It's different if a relatively harmless cartoon includes a blackface gag or a reference to a popular celebrity (I *STILL* see nothing wrong with Rochester Andersen caricatures, Cab Calloway impersonations or 'blackface' Jolson parodies) but some of these are rather extreme. Offended? No, I'm not, but if I were any TV station, CN or not, I'd be nervous about these. There are some that I think are misunderstood, though. I think "Tin Pan Alley Cats" is a true classic, and it's CARTOONY, not 'racist'. A caricature of a popular celebrity like Fats Waller (Jazz and Swing were very popular at the time it was made) shouldn't be considered offensive. There could stand to be some edits made, but heck, the majority of the film is perfectly TV-worthy, if, that is, you're a leniant network who puts a disclaimer or documentary before it.
Same goes for the other films I mentioned above.

John~~

A cool idea (non-sequential bills and all!!)... Now who could they get to head up this lofty, covert operation??? Has to be someone out of the regular loop of corporate cartoon-dom, but that loves cartoons and "tweaking authority"... Hmmm only one person that I'd nominate... Happyheathen ;) (he'd eat it up), and you and me and a couple of others :D for whatever cartoon insights/knowledge we could lend. OHHHHHH Mr. GAK...!!!! ;) ;) ;)

Well, down here in Texas we have a good angle of elevation to the `bird and lots of open space to shoot the signal up 22,000 feet. The only quandry would be whether or not to do it on the Cartoon Network-East or Cartoon Network-West feed, since, sadly, you can't cover the whole country at one time unless you hit a single signal station (say that 10 times fast) like CNN or ESPN.

CN-E would go to more people, but it would probably slip through the cracks better on CN-W, since the suits in Atlanta would be less likely to be watching for the 30-60 minutes you'd need to carry out the rouge airways liberation project...

Not necessarily ancient, just put out by some company that specializes in public domain tapes...as opposed to WB.

Enjoy your cartoon! And hang onto that tape!

Why was Tin Pan Alley Cats banned anyway? Because the cats are caricacatures of black singers? That is one beyondscope sickening reason....
