View Full Version : Is money SO important?

Honestly, what is so frickin' important about having money, & being rich?! Honestly, I only want enough for me to be able to support myself, a family, & still be able to get an occasional comic or toy, when one I want comes out.

I don't want a big house. When I get a house, I want a nice little 1-story, with hopefully 2 bathrooms. Just because thats what I'm use to now(hehe).
What I really want now, is my own apartment. I want a rundown little apartment, maybe near the top of a building. Then I could fix it up to my likeing. What I REALLY want to do is paint a mural in the entire house.
When I retire, I want to move up to a nice little cabin out in the mountains.

Sure, I like nice cars, but all I need is one that gets me around.

Right now, I'm simply disguisted with being greedy. Right now, all I want is what I need. NEED.

So, you can take your big fancy-pants solid gold house, and that rocket car...and you can......uhm...yeah!

Anyway. Why is it so important to have so much money, & whatnot? I'll save my greed for holidays. The rest of the time, I'm only working for what I needs in life! ;) :D

Your concept of money is almost exactly what mine is.... enough to be comfortable with my family. We've got a small three bedroom house (one each for the kids and one for the wife & I) although we've only got one bathroom :)

A little extra for the occassional toy/DVD/etc ain't bad either. Plus I drive the flashiest of all cars - a '95 Saturn SL2 (better known as basic transportation :p)

Being rich would be so....I dunno, boring I guess, you'd be expected to act a certain way and such. I'd rather just have enough money plus a little extra to use on my collecting hobbies. But sadly, the mighty green paper is power over human life to alot of people.

You say that now. You'll be singing a different tune later.

Having enough to get by is just fine by me...until something major happens in your life that ruins you. Then you wish you were rich.

Aye. I'd like to be rich if only to be financially secure in case of anything happening (Expensive operation, car crash, etc).

Then again, the richer I am, the more of a target I'll be.... so much for financial security!

I think if I did have alot of money, I would be one of those eccentrics who never really flaunted their wealth. I'd still drive modest used cars, live in a modest home, work, and just have my money for emergencies and a nice trip now and then. In the end, I would die and leave my money to somebody in a will and they would all be surprised I had that much. I knew of people like that when I was a kid and always pictured myself being like that.

I'd love to be rich. However, if I was rich I wouldn't go all out, and completely flaunt it everywhere. I'd get a decent house, and a nice car and stuff like that. I don't want to spend it on a HUGE house that has more room than I'll ever need. Hook me up with a nice decent house, and I'll be happy.

I just need enough to make me comfortable and live good. With some extra money on the side to get the little things, and stuff. ^_^

Being financially comfortable would be nice, but I'm one of those silly idealists who took a job that pays squat, in exchange for absolutely loving the work. And while I would kill for a raise, I wouldn't want to get rich by doing something that I hate.

Money does bring power, in a way. if you have money, you can buy inside information on things going on. you don't gotta scrounge up bits and pieces for college or join the military (ooooh to pay off what the gov't gave me so i don't have to do active duty...). heck you don't even need to go to college! if you use money right, you can become a powerful person. look at bill gates. he's got so much money and i dunno if i consider him powerful, but that Gates Scholarship he gives out to people.....that's really nice. i'm not money hungry, i'm not gonna date only rich guys, but in a sense having money can give the feeling of power (you know, butlers, chauffers, maids....concubines if needed...). it's also the root of all evil >=)

I saw a study that actually shows that money CAN buy happiness. It said in the last decade, people who won the lottery or any other way of getting money, they are happier. That could be because now they never have to worry about money problems again.

There are more important things that money but it is nice. For example if I had gobs of extra cash I would persuade WB execs to air Spring Break Special or release DVD collector sets of WBA series.

--Stephen King on writing come to mind, "You don't do it for the money, or you're a monkey." This is from a man who was so poor that he walked about in bedroom slippers rather than shoes and frequently had to have his phone shut off because he and his wife couldn't pay the bill every month. Now he lives in a palatial house, but I don't think he ever really adapted to the "rich" mentality, or felt comfortable in it (between an incident with a psycho stalker and the mishap with the truck a couple years back).
Still, I would like enough to pay my debts and finance my dream of writing (as soon as I can figure out how to copy some of my stories on a disk and scrape up $500, I can be well on my road to publishing).
I've noticed how utterly miserable and sexually frustrated/hungry upper-class girls are (of the men I can't say). They tend to be very immature, bratty, and trapped miserably between their Richard-less Ken doll boyfriends and their lower-class lovers that their society and their parents shun.
So I don't think money buys happiness, but it's reassuring to at least be financially solvent. And who needs a mansion? I'd be happy to live in a dormroom or small apartment on/near a college campus all my life, and have free access to the comp lab and eating facilities, even if I'm not technically a student.

You all know who Dave Mathews is? That guy from The Dave Mathews Band? Well, I like his pholosophy on his money situation...

He has more than enough that he'll ever need..so..he just gives the rest away to those who actually need it.

Thats what I'd do if I suddenly got a billion dollars..or something. Hehe.

There's a difference, I guess, between being rich and acting rich. I'd love to have more money, but I wouldn't like it to change me.

(Actually, I wish that I was rich right now. My paycheck isn't here yet and I'm broke!)

I would like to be rich enough to own a house, not huge, but nice. Size would depend on if I'm the only one living in it or not. I'd like enough money to get a car, nothing fancy, I'm not a big fan of driving so I dont really care about cars. And I'd like enough money to fulfill all my guitar gear purchasing desires. Whcih I guess could add up to quite a bit of $ :)

In general, I'd like to be rich, but I wouldnt want to act rich like Karkull's pointed out.

You know, I got to thinking about this very topic a while back. My cousin's grandfather owned a paving company and sold in for close to $200 million. He gave each of his original nine employees a million each and is going to split the rest up between my aunt and her brother, which will in turn trickle down to my cousins. They'll most likely pocket somewhere around $20 million, depending on how they split it among themselves. Now, it sounds really nice, but I can honestly say I'd not want that kind of money around me. I just think it attracts negativity, you know? People leach onto you mainly. I'll be happy with enough to get by comfordably, with the occasional splurge on some toys, comics, or movies/music...

I went into philosophy for the money. :wakko:

Seriously, the security of a nice chunk of capital would be very very nice, but only because it would give me the leisure to pursue other interests without having to worry about where my next meal was coming from.

no one'll leach on you if they don't know you're rich :)

Unless you're very frugal I think that people would figure it out eventually. The trick is to surround yourself with people who either don't care that you're rich or people who you trust (not just any suck-up).

Ah hell, I wanna be rich. Rich upon rich upon rich. That doesn't mean I'd flaunt it, but I'd still like to be rich.

And that's what I am talking about being one of those eccentrics that live modest lives but have buckawow bucks in the bank, but nobody realizes it. That way, people accept you for who you are and not what you have, and you know who your real friends are.

I'd love to be rich! If I had the money I would buy a house in San Francisco, which is something I'd really like to do someday (I fell in love with the houses there while on a visit last summer)... sadly, it's realllly expensive, so my hopes aren't up very high. Just enough money to buy what I want and need is probably enough for me. I don't think I'd want distant relatives and "friends" knocking on my door, asking for loans or money to buy a new car. But it sure would be nice to live like a celebrity, or even Bill Gates! It's crazy what he's got in his house!

Speaking for the incredibly and fabulously wealthy
Id have to say ... Its very nice.

I cant imagine living any other way.

I think its nice when the middle class is comfortable
with thier modest pennies.

Its good to know that you all are happy with just enough
to keep you comfortable.

As the masters of industry and comerce we strive to give
you just enough to keep you quiet. Its a delicate balancing
act let me tell you ... and its comforting to know that our
efforts are successful. I'll be sure to spread the word down at
the country club.

But really, I have to say Im not better than any of you
because Im rich.

Im only better than you because my money has afforded
me a better education , better housing and better taste.
As my pa-pa always says were all born poor - just some
of us are graced by god to be born into trust funds.

Without the money we would all be equal.
And what kind of world would that be really?

Boring & tedious. Who would cook for us ?
Who would bring us breakfast in the morning ?
Who would build and deliver all the precious things
we wealthy people buy if there were no poor people?

Sometime I picture though, what it would be like to be poor ..

To live in a house with less than 12 rooms ...or to have to
"lease" a jaguar .. or to <shudder> only be able to afford
a 56 inch television.

And I have to admire the courage and fortitude of the
middle class. God Bless you all .

Oh well ... its tea time friends .

Toodle Loo .. ;)

Give me enough money to have my own place (just a tiny flat will do), enough to spend on going out and the occasional personal gift, a car to travel and the odd holiday combined with a enjoyable job and I'd be happy.

Of course if you made me RICH I'd be happier still...

I wanna be quietly rich. Extra money lying around never hurts security.

As long as i'll have money for college, and later a house, food, bills, to take care of my family (heaven forbid i might ever have a wife or kids), and just general necessities. As long as i'm happy, i don't really care how much money i have.

If I had an extra $2000 right now, I'd be able to pay for a great, single apartment next year. But now, I'm living in a 2 br, piece of crap. I officially hate money now. I also hate colleges and their money-grubbing ways. If I ever get rich enough, I am going to tear my college down.
