APAN (KP International) Two cinemas in Japan are adding smell to the movie-going experience, and have chosen Irish hunk Colin Farrell's latest film for their debut.
The inaugural smelly flick will be last year's historical flop 'The New World' starring Farrell, Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer and young and talented newcomer Q'Orianka Kilcher.
When there are romantic scenes, audiences will smell a floral fragrance; a mix of peppermint and rosemary will accompany the heartrending moments; an orange and grapefruit citrus scent symbolizes joy; and an herbal-blend with a tang of tea tree and eucalyptus will accent anger.
The scents will circulate through the theatre via machines filled with fragrant liquids located under the back row seats.
Akiko Suzaki, a spokesperson from NTT Communication Corp, the company that will supply the machines, said movie theatres will be able to download a variety of scent sequences for future films via the Internet.
Carl Stalling sez: "It will never work!"
I can't wait to download smells off the internet.

Now would be a good time to reissue "Polyester".

This is great news,

for everyone who wants to know what Colin Farrell smelles like.
But this is one of those things that gets invented again nearly every year for the past hundred years.

The part that is weirdest to me? That they think eucalyptus represents anger well.

...Didn't they already have Smellovision back in the 40s or something, in movie theatres? It didn't work out because the smells lingered in the theatre too long and stuck to the chairs or something like that...

The part that is weirdest to me? That they think eucalyptus represents anger well. Maybe people don't associate eucalyptus with anger yet, but after they've been conditioned through movies to make that connection, they will.
Someone will come walking out of Snakes on a Plane; go by an old person; and punch out the guy because of his eucalyptus arthritis ointment.
Oh, it will happen.
Mark my words.
It's all a fiendish plot against old people.

Chili's should get royalties. They used "Smell-O-Vision" promos in the mid-90's. They'd post a picture of a good looking meal and then provided an area to scratch and sniff your TV set. As a kid, I could never make it to the TV quickly enough to scratch the set and thought for many years that it would have worked if I could only have reached it in time.

Not really because they too made out a check to John Waters. (Look up the film Polyester)

Not really because they too made out a check to John Waters. (Look up the film Polyester)But even Odorama (http://www.kulture-void.com/motion/swelter_in_vogue/polyester.html) is a bit of a homage. Smell systems like Aroma-rama have been around since the fifties.
