View Full Version : Live-Action Cartoons
Hi Folks,
I am considering writing a ToonHeads episode about live-action cartoons.
I think "You Oughta Be in Pictures" is a MUST, but after that Freleng classic,
there are only about five or six other live-action cartoon possibilities.....
I would like to hear from y'all.
List your three favorite live-action cartoons and why...
And I'll see what I can do, ok?

The Public Domain Felix the Cat 1928 classic "Comicalamites" MUST be shown! It's one of the earliest Live Action cartoon ever produced. I'll be happy even if just clips of this cartoon are shown. You also might wanna air the B&W version of "The Adventures of Popeye."
-Pietro:D
There is also a Betty Boop cartoon CN shows sometimes in which someone (Max Fleischer?) shows betty backgrounds from her adventures and she jumps into them (then it goes to a clip from an older film).
You could probably do an hour long Toonheads with this sort of thing, especially when you use the clips allready mentioned by others.
And Porky's Pooch might be worth at least mentioning since it used photographs for backgrounds instead of the standard paintings ("What's Cookin' Doc?" also does this).
I don't know if I can choose my favorites.

Whle there are a number of cartoons CN has access to with live action scenes, most are either short or have little or no interaction with the characters. "You Ought to Be in Pictures," "What's Cooking, Doc?" "The Adventures of Popeye" and "Betty Boop's Rise to Fame" (even if it is a poor PD print) are your best four choices. Others that have some live action include "Daffy Duck in Hollywood," "Who Killed Who?" "Eatin' On the Cuff," "Hare Trigger," "Rebel Rabbit," "Rabbit Hood," 'Rabbit Every Monday," "The Mouse That Jack Built," "Porky's Inn Trouble" "TV of Tomorrow," "House of Tomorrow," "Three Little Pups," "The Isle of Pingo Pongo" (but we know you're not gonna be able to show this one) "Flying Circus" and "A Feud with A Dude" (please don't show this one).

There's also Famous Studios' Popeye cartoon "How Green Is My Spinach?" --- where, at the end, a live-action tyke in the audience saves the day by tossing a can of spinach to our hero. And, for MGM cartoons, there's "Senor Droopy".

Mr. GAK~
My compadres seem to have overlooked two very important cartoon/live action outings... Annnnnd they're both quite important. Namely "Bosko The Talkink Kid" (mega important for selling Schlesinger and Jack Warner on cartoons). And the long animation and dance sequence (no dialogue) of Gene Kelly's "Invitation To The Dance" , important as one of the last gasps of MGM's cartoon studio before ol' Fred Quimby was finally shown the door (twenty years TOO LATE} ;). PLEASE give these serious consideration along with "You Oughta Be In Pictures"
Oooooops one more of great importance... though it's a feature (want to make this Toonheads 4 hours long?? ;)) Warner's real dying gasp... "The Incredible Mr. Limpet"

HI GAK,
You want to make a great hit with live action toons?
SHOW "THE TALK INK KID"
My reason for this is because it is the GRANDADDY of all the WB toons this is the pilot that started it all. (need a copy of it?)
Also I vote for "THE MOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (UNCUT!)
TALK INK KID would be an awsome cartoon to start out with
and end with the BUGS bunny one where SAM opens the saloon doors and sees all the fighting ect. I'm sorry I forgot which toon this was I'm sure some one will post very soon.

If a half-hour episode, I'd stick with just Warners, if a full hour, use MGM and Fleischers. For a Half Hour:
"Bosko the Talkink Kid"
"You Oughtta Be In Pictures"
"What's Cookin Doc"
full hour:
"Bosko the Talkink Kid"
"Betty Boop's Rise to Fame"
"You Oughtta Be In Pictures"
"Anchors Aweigh"
"Dangerous when Wet"

I totally agree with Matthew 100% on this one...
Gak, you have to show "Bosko The Talk-ink Kid" that film is very important to the Warner Bros. studios, cause if this film was never made there would be "NO" Looney Tunes or Merrie Melodies.

You might also want to consider:
"Cartoons Ain't Human" (FAMOUS, 1943) - a human hand stamps Popeye's animation cel with "Censored".
"Goonland" (FLEISCHER), 1938) - two human hands repair the broken film.

Mr. GAK,
I think the show should be one full
hour long with six cartoons:
"Comicalamities" (Felix the Cat)
"Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid" (WB)
"Betty Boop's Rise to Fame" (Fleischer)
"You Ought To Be In Pictures" (WB)
"Anchors Aweigh" (MGM)
"Dangerous when Wet" (MGM)
"Comicalamities" is one of the earliest "Live Action" cartoons and should be on the show (unless, of couse you don't have it).:D And you MUST have "Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid" that was the one WB cartoon that started it ALL!:)

Or the Betty Boop cartoon "Ha! Ha! Ha!", which is a lot like the silent Fleischer cartoons. CN has a print of it, and it hasn't been overplayed on LNB&W like "Betty Boop's Rise to Fame" has.

"More Pep" is another Betty Boop PD cartoon in the same vein that CN has access to and hasn't overplayed (It's also one of the few tolerable Pudgy cartoons, which earns it another distinction...)

Not to be a cynic, guys, but forget it. All your begging and pleading will avail you but naught. Besides, you'd be better off wishing for fat-free Big Macs than for CN broadcasting Bosko...
Anyway, back to the topic at hand...
There is also a live-action scene in "Porky's Movie Mystery". :D

THANK YOU!!!! Now you have convinced CN NOT to play Bosko! Gad, you are SUCH a genius!

I don't know if any of you had noticed this. But there is live-action footage of New York City's square in the opening and closing shots of LIGHTS FANTASTIC.

My ideal version:
Comicalamities
Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid
You Ought to Be In Pictures
But, going with cartoons that I know that CN has...
Ha Ha Ha
Adventures of Popeye
You Ought to Be In Pictures
Either way, I hope that CN would be able to put up with the B&W cartoons before 2 am Saturday night. Though I guess you could get the computer colorized You Ought...

I think CN has a print of "Comicalamities," but I'm not sure.
And I know for sure, that CN has a print of "Bosko the Talk-Ink Kid." So, Joe, it's likely, that your first episode idea can make it on the air.
