I’ve been reading about how the
“number of posts” indicator is becoming
a problem.

It seems people think it’s some sort of
Accomplishment to have 200 or 8000 posts.
Some may even be striving to reach these
benchmarks without thought to the content or
substance of their posts.

HERES MY SOLUTION:

Give the members something to strive for
that’s actually meaningful and improves the
forums for everyone involved.

Create the TOON ZONE FORUM AWARDS !

Some of the possible categories could be.

The award for most original / entertaining thread
goes to … (insert your name here)
The award for most intelligent or entertaining post
goes to … (insert your name here)

The award for best Thread Starter overall for 2001
goes to … (insert your name here)
The award for most consistent quality of posts for 2001
goes to … (insert your name here)
The award for most knowledgeable member of 2001
goes to … (insert your name here)

and finally .. The award for best unprompted suggestion
which has improved the quality of the forum in 2002
goes to …. The Spirit ( I’m giving myself this one
for suggesting the TOON ZONE FORUM AWARDS.)
LOL.

I think this is a good idea and will increase the moral of
the boards and inspire us to create thought provoking and
meaningful posts.

Whose gonna care if you’ve got 4000 posts?
Not when you’ve got written beneath your avatar
“Best poster of 2001”.

In fact if you’ve posted 4000 times and haven’t won an
award – well shame on you – your posts cant have been
all that impressive right?

The moderators could maybe pick 4 or 5 of their favorites
in each category and let the forum members vote for the
winners. Or maybe the forum members themselves throughout
the year can make nominations.

What does everyone think ?

Shall we have TOON ZONE FORUM AWARDS ?

I hope so, I’m all ready renting a tux for the ceremony.

That sounds cool! It would be fun.

I like the idea...it'd probably need some more ground rules/work before implementing it...

You would have to see what the other mods think, because I am not sure. To me, the members are just going to butter up moderators by voting for them, and most mods know not to pad post counts so it might not work.

Most everyone on the boards is entertaining, though, but
most knowledgable goes to newsreporter Matt Wilson.

"most intelligent post"? I dunno, it sounds a bit... weird.

Im not quite sure what you were trying to say here.

Are you saying members are going to butter up Mods by voting for Moderators ?

If so , I dont think this is a problem. Id say that Moderators shouldnt be eligible to receive awards since they're distributing them by tracking votes etc.

Instead , If anything, maybee their could be a vote by the members for favorite moderator.

Are you saying members would "butter up" Mods to gain favor with the Moderators so they would get nominated? Or win the award?

I dont really think this is a problem. I give the moderators on here more credit than that. I also credit them with enough intelligence to spot members who are trying to manipulate them into bestowing an award that has no practical or substancial value other than bieng cool. ;)

Besides if the moderators were "buttered" or manipulated into giving an award - they'd be following a long established tradition
of award ceremonies.

What - you dont think Russel Crowe was sending out fruit baskets to every member of the academy the week before the Oscars?

Hmm. There's a lot that happens in a year. I don't think there is really any way of being able to keep track of "best threads," "best posters," etc. I mean, WF just moved to Toon Zone last April; we don't even have one year under our belt here; and I don't remember what was being talked about even a month ago, let alone 8 months ago.

It's a neat idea to have some kind of awards like that, though. . . .

Hey Zues ...

Maybee a year is too ambitious.

Perhaps it should be monthly ?
Perhaps it should be limited to Worlds Finest as
an experiment ?

Just an idea -
Its out there , lets see if anything comes of it.

Maybee you could point this thread out to some of
your fellow moderators - see what the powers that be think.

Just be careful of hurt feelings on this sort of thing. Unless you want to be PC and make one of those "Everyone's a winner!" awards. ;) (Man, I hate those in school....that defeats the whole purpose of an award)

I don't think anyone's feeling would be hurt...assuming that the awards go to posters who deserve it...
it just makes people try harder to be betterer!! =D

I don't know, it sounds all right, but wouldn't that be sort of encouraging board flooding?

I personaly think it's a dumb idea, (no offense). I mean this whole big deal about the post count is dumb! No, one gave a darn before, why should we start now?

Nightflower

All right....unless I got this entirely wrong....

For everyone who says "Doesn't this encourage post count?/What's the big deal with post count?"

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POST COUNTS.

Spirit is trying to promote substance of posts, and discourage number of posts, by suggesting we recognize achievements in the quality of posts. IE

The award for most original / entertaining thread
goes to … (insert your name here)

Wasn't there something like this at the end of December? A best threads of 2001 thread? I didn't participate in it, cuz like Maxie, I forget what I read a month ago, let alone 8 months ago!

batboy2001

Also, who has the time to do this? The mods? This is a message board, not a competition. I really don't think this issue should be a big deal, if any.

The Mad Hatter

I know I certainly don't have time to judge even a monthly competition... I have a hard enough time just glancing at all the posts that come in! Plus, as Nightflower said, I'd worry about hurt feelings.

So, while it certainly is a cool idea, I doubt it would ever happen.

Maxie Zeus

I'm all for encouraging quality, but I'm not sure a competition is exactly the way to go. I think we do a pretty good job of getting quality as it is, simply because most everyone around here is so receptive to and encouraging of it.
