It looks like the movies studios are folliwng the disturbing "sequel every year" formula. Remember when BATMAN & ROBIN's failure was based on the fact that the sequel was released too soon? Well, it looks like that has been thrown out the door.

Really? 2001 only had nine sequels, and most years had more? Hm. Interesting what a skewed perspective will do to ya. Probably because all the sequels last year were so high profile, is why they stick out in our minds....

Heh...good one Maxie.
17 sequels this year - wow! That avaerges to over 1 sequel a month! 10 - 12 of these sequels are scheduled to hit in the summer, it is gonna be a disaster feild. I wonder, though...with all these sequels, could 2002 have the highest box office of the year?

I agree with the guy in the USA Today article that said that sequels get a bad wrap.
Good sequels to good original movies develops an entire universe that people who love the characters and stories can enjoy. Just look at all of us, for example! The Batman/Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond, and Justice League are really all sequels of Batman: The Animated Series. Does that make them bad by default because they're sequels? No way!!!
Besides, I don't really consider a movie series (like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones) sequels. I consider all 6 Star Wars movies, all 7 Harry Potter movies, and all 3 Lord of the Rings movies as basically one LONG continuous movie. You know?
Long live the sequels! ;)

A Pokemon movie is released every year in Japan and it is still doing well.
Rugrats has a movie every 2 years and it is still doing well.
How soon is too soon for a sequel?

Sequels do get a bad rap, but that's becuase most of them do stink. But there are the good ones, though. Aliens and Terminator 2 and Godfather Part 2 are the best sequels ever made. And I think this year we are gonna see some good sequels on the horizon. This year may change the perception of sequels if they are done right. And doing sequels back to back is the right way to do it, I think...
