Sorry if this is old news, but I just read this on tvguide.com:
ODE TO JOYSTICKS: USA Network and Major League Gaming, the world's largest organized video-gaming league, are partnering on a deal in which USA will air seven hourlong shows covering vid-game competitions. Says MLG prez Matthew Bromberg, "[Pro gaming] is like poker was two years ago, or NASCAR 15 years ago." Just make sure your TV gets reception down in Mom's basement.

Why is it that every network BESIDES G4 are picking up GAME-RELATED shows?

I think it's recent news; here's an article (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060417/ap_on_hi_te/video_gaming_tv_show_3) from yahoo news I saw on Blue's News (http://www.bluesnews.com/).
I have a feeling it's going to be nothing but console games; probably no DoW competitions shown.

The two games we know for sure so far are Halo 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee...
Wonder what could have been if Nintendo had given SSBM a sequel on the GCN...

I'm glad they're interested in video game related programming, but making competition shows like Arena IMO is not the way to go.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I have a feeling that G4 will probably cancel X-Play this year. Something's telling me it will be gone. The channel is desperately trying to cover up the video game aspect and since Sarah Lane left G4, the only two remaining TechTV personalities that remain are the Xplay ones, so I'm thinking it's inevitable they'll be gone soon.

Of the 4 things I've seen on G4, I liked Arena the most (keep in mind that this is after Screen Savers got cancelled) so this is a good thing in my opinion.

that could be an entertaining show.

MLG has a total lack of game variety... And I find that a lot of it's "pros" are very immature compared to the PC gaming scene. But this is cool, and I support any movement to get comp out to the mainstream.

This is badass. Sounds like Arena but taken seriously. I like.
The thought of seeing some hard core Smash battles is making my mouth water already.

Am I the only person who thinks that this is a dumb idea? I mean, outside of fans of videogames, how many people would actually watch a video gaming tournament? I don't think I could watch a bunch of people I don't know competing in a video game, unless maybe it was one I really liked.

If I was there, I'd definately watch. However, on TV? Eh, maybe if nothing else was on.

Watching a video game competition is the equivalent of going to your friend's house to play Super Mario Bros but never getting a chance to touch the controller all night.
Honestly, watching someone else play video games is the most boring thing to do in the entire world.

Actually, I kind of like watching other people play videogames. But, I don't know if I'd like watching people on TV playing videogames...

My thoughts exactly. Seeing a new game in action, let's say for right now Twilight Princess, would be cool to watch for awhile. Playing games with your friends and anticipating who gets the controller next (hopefully being yourself) isn't that bad. But watching people play video games on TV, boring! The only thing that might be entertaining are games like DDR, Guitar Freaks, and some others, but a WHOLE SHOW dedicated to it? No thank you.
